Im thinking that the notch milled into the end is there so, when working blind with the muffkin on, you have some feel for reference when you are through the hole. If making one, you really don’t need the roll pin. A shallow dimple would do for reference. Maybe a drop of orange paint in it.

Right, mechanic makes inventions that save time and solve problems. If his pay gets cut because of it, he is the one getting "ripped off". He works to make a profit, Not to give everything away. Some days there's hardly anything to work on, and during the growing season he can't work fast enough. His savings carries him, or the place ends up closing up and he goes and gets a job at a bigger company. "The worker is worth his wages" the good book says. Think about it. The bartender in the tavern gets a jar full of money at the end of the night just for handing you a beer with the cap removed , and remembering which kind, and keeping your whistle wet. How can you tip if your invention means you cut the price? Then you gotta buy flowers for Mrs mechanic, so she doesn't shave you bald when you pass out in your chair, tired and broke.

I remember having a lawn-boy mower back in the late 80's which would build up carbon on the ports. Disassembled that thing so many times i could do it in my sleep. Changed 2-cycle oil brand and the issue went away. Not saying it was the oil but once changed no more carbon build up. Wish I had that tool back then for sure.

The exhaust on most of them have screens that can plug up. So take it apart an clean it or throw it out. Back in the day someone must be a braineack thought mufflers were causing fires. I've never seen a exhaust do that. So it pluggy up from that law. Just like lean slow speed jets bs.
@JohnSmith-pl2bk

Old-fashioned diesels (No DPF or DEF) certainly can cause grass fires through flaming carbon particles in the exhaust gases. Our 4wd club absolutely forbade any vehicle that was diesel from club trips if there was no fine stainless steel wire gauze "sock" on the end of the tailpipe to catch the flaming hot chunks of carbon before they ignited the farmer's grass when we cruised through to the rough areas/tracks. I was amazed to see the size of the chucks that break off and get caught in the gauze... That gauze "sifts" them and deposits them harmlessly on the ground. It's even worth while putting such a sock on a gasoline 4wd... "No sir, I can't have started any fires...look at my exhaust tip"... Just don't park your catalytic converter equipped vehicle in long dry grass......

I was made the home and garden lawn-mowing manager at the age of 8 years... and given the Antipodes equivalent of a Lawn Boy mower with the OMC engine and an alloy deck. I used that mower for 45 years before giving it (still working) to a workmate to cut his lawns. I used to replace the spark plug every 7 years and rotate the reeds every 14.... used the best 2 stroke mix oil possible...finally ending up with Stihl synthetic @ 50:1... I think I scraped out the carbon once early on..... then never again as it just didn't build up when decent 2 stoke oils were mixed at the "correct" ratio which got "leaner" with the oil as time progressed and the oil quality also got better. What did you hate about it?

In the early 2000's when I worked at a Lawn Boy dealer we still got lots of those old 2 strokes in for tune ups and decarbon jobs. We would just remove the muffler anyways because they always needed to be burned out with an acetylene torch so while it was off we cleaned the ports as well. They burned real dirty at 32:1 and clogged exhausts were very common even if you ran Lawn Boys low ash oil.

I've got a mid 60's Lawnboy with a D-400 engine that I've bragged about on this channel a couple of times. Oh I said it started on the first or second pull, it had great power, it was wonderful. I hit a piece of firewood that fell off the stack and bent the crank. I pulled the motor off and pulled the cylinder off. It had a stuck top ring on a 2 ring piston and two of the 3 exhaust ports were plugged. I wonder what a good running Lawn Boy D-400 motor is like? Thanks Taryl. P.S. I guess you're supposed to clean those ports out. I had that mower for 40 years and never cleaned them once.

I still trim mow with an old Lawn Boy 5072, but use a 3/8 drill bit by hand only, it’s the second fastest & easiest way to get the carbon out as you have to pull the blade & muff cover off. Thanks for showing that!

But that’s another story for a different video.

The notch at the end I'm thinking it gives room for carbon to break loose and to escape. The tip will bust through it and then it gets skinny and allows the carbon to pass That's just my guess
@OBC-radio

I think this would also have the (greatly) added bennefit of pushing the carbon out into the muffler to be blown out. Doing it the factory way woud essentially make it easy to push a lot of the carbon back into the cylinder, which would more than offset any justification for their reccomendation of using a "wooden dowel" over a screwdriver...
