I have read Gaiman's Norse Mythology, and is currently reading Sandman's book 4. Both works, no matter how much disgusted I feel for Gaiman's actions, are masterpieces. That said, I am a great fan of the art, not the artist. Me loving Gaiman's work doesn't mean I love him too. I just cannot stop buying Sandman until I've finished reading it. U can't separate art from the artist because that art is a part of that artist, that art exists because of the artist ideology, life experiences and the existence of the artist themselves. U can and should enjoy the art without any guilt if u like it but saying art is separate from the artist is plain and simple stupidity.

Answer to your last question is that, law should separate them from earning by their art in some cases. Because art and artist maybe not be separate in some cases. About Hitler's painting, there is nothing wrong in buying that now, because hitler is dead and his painting doesn't represeant his massacre idea. But this wouldn't apply on other artforms and some other painting also.
