You'll Soon See White on Traffic Lights - But Why?

Get ready to see some white lights joining the red, yellow, and green party on the traffic lights! It would signal to drivers of autonomous vehicles (AVs). The white light should help them manage the upcoming intersection of traffic flow intelligently. The thinking is that both traffic congestion levels and overall fuel consumption could be reduced. The cars and trucks that are driving themselves won't need to 'look' at the white traffic light, because they'll be communicating with it wirelessly. 🚦💡🌈

Except that Ai is real now. AGI will probably come next decade. Quantum computers might be accessible in a few decades. Lots of people will be losing their jobs. All that is not science fiction is already happening. So yeah smart roads and self driving cars will be a thing in a few cities or parts of the world by 2050 (which this video is suggesting). Flying cars are not a thing because the Anti gravity tech you see in movies is much much harder. But at least "Knight Rider" will most likely become a thing 😊🎉

@@madjunir We will probably need quantum computers before we can get to AGI. The is a huge leap between large scale language probability (what is currently being called AI) and AGI. The job changes are mostly just a buggy whip issue. In much the same way that AI provides valuable assistance currently, we will adjust to the new tools as they become available. This will occur much the same way as we adjusted to cars, calculators, spreadsheets, electric light, written dictionaries (in no order whatsoever) and pretty much anything else you can thing of.

I love how some people and companies are like “by 2050 there will only be electric self driving cars”. There are people out there that have 100+ year old cars and still drive them, that’s not going to ever change. If anything, with the constant rise in automotive reliability, ownership of ‘classic cars’ may become even more prevalent. As an example, Brian Johnson the singer for AC/DC daily drives a 1929 Bentley he named “Thunder Guts”. Gasoline/Diesel powered non-autonomous vehicles will ALWAYS be around, and I’m really REALLY happy about that.

@@GuyTrea: No they don't. Not in cases where you have to mix light from both ends of the spectrum in order to see another color, as magenta/purple. Actual green things emit or reflect the light in a wavelength that comes from the green part of the spectrum. So to all non-colorblind people that will be seen as green because it IS green., even if it's seen as if it were "white" to a colorblind person, while not being _actually_ white. For a non-colorblind person the white light has to come from the whole spectrum of visible light, unlike what it does for a colorblind person. So for the non-colorblind person the light that they're seeing as white is _actually_ white (even if it starts out as a mix of RGB). Big difference.

@@HelloKittyFanMan. "Green" and "white" are qualia that only exist in private experience. In someone with normally functioning color vision, there is a direct correlation between a physical phenomenon and the reported qualia, but that's all it is. A correlation. For stephen7938, as a colorblind man, green has always been white. He didn't say anything about that applying to anyone else. Sure, it's the way it appears to him - that's how qualia _work._ It doesn't make him wrong.

This more or less has something to do with a high signal meaning go and down signal meaning stop during the ball signal and semaphore signal era. Traffic lights should be able to tell that there's nobody sitting at light A so light A doesn't change to green causing a dozen cars that like me to stop for absolutely no reason, waste gas and pollute more! We've already added a light to left turn signals... A second left yellow turn light that blinks. Not sure why we need a completely separate light to blink. Couldn't we have just used the existing yellow turn signal and make it blink? For those that don't know or don't have these implemented yet, the blinking yellow turn signal is a "left turn yields" to oncoming traffic. Designed to enable cars to make a left turn when there is no traffic instead of sitting at a red "no left turn" signal for a few minutes until the light turns green again.

The day that you can confidently and with peace of mind send your mom and your daughter to her soccer match in a self-driving car is still a long way off. The current state of technology, the complexity of the task and the state of the infrastructure means at best self-driving cars will only be capable of duplicating what the human computer, the one on top of your neck(the best piece of safety equipment we have) is already accomplishing every day now. What we are trying to accomplish is creating something that is less prone to errors than the being that created it.

How about we wise up and remove all intersections with lights (which are costly and inefficient) and replace them all with traffic circles (which don't cost anything to operate and are more efficient). We don't needlessly burn fuel while idling at a light if we use circles. There isn't any traffic bunching up with circles, so there will be less waiting to pull out onto main roads from side/cross streets. No need to run electric lines and pay for the electricity to operate those lights as well as constant maintenance and upgrading. Also. Emergency vehicles will be able to travel to their destinations faster and safer.

The automatic elevator was invented in the 1890s but people were afraid to use them so elevator operators continued into the 1960s. People currently say they wouldn’t trust a self driving automobile. That will change and self driving vehicles will be common place in the future. I’m guessing that sometime in the future states will stop issuing drivers licenses because self driving autos will be safer. Might take 50 years but it will happen…

The color white would be a poor choice for a signal on traffic lights. A better color would be cyan. And perhaps make it flashing to draw attention that you have to proceed with caution. White would blend in with lights illuminating the road or adjacent land.

@@jameslester4474 Actually with better communication options, people would get more information _without_ needing to look around unnecessarily. With the current loud and alarming car horn sound everybody nearby pretty much must look around and figure out what it's all about and whether it applies to them. Is somebody mad that they got cut off? Is it a friendly reminder that the light turned green? Are they warning you of some hazard? Is someone saying thank you for letting them in? Did a kid just run out into the street? Did someone's ride just show up? It could mean all sorts of things, and having I'd say maybe 3 options would be an improvement: 1. A loud attention-getting horn to alert of dangers or express negative feelings or when the options below don't seem to work. 2. A normal typical horn for general everyday use. 3. A lighter, friendlier tone for expressing something nice but not urgent.

This existing technology is known as LiDAR and lifi. Adapting this into an stayem of automation and safty control is a logical step, not a "prediction" in the future beyond this there are already plans to have the head lights on the cars projecting data, so as the trafic is connected into the safty system like we use cell phones to gather sensor data on mass.

Exceptional on the formality though I disdain my speculation around when self driving vehicles were coming into our lives, may I gest that I support progress but I worry on the accuracy these developments are considered (i.e weather/natural disasters, detours/delays) to name a few due to we've only just begun on a.i being implemented into society's way of life as a whole. I pray that proper thoughts and data will be consistent before another grave global catastrophe arises or becomes another economic waste when history has proven these flawed faults humanity hasn't recovered out of prior. Believe I'm gonna sub and like this because of the accuracy you provided effectively well.
