@@notgonnaknowtillthen3192 if anything this "Joi" crushed his last illusion by calling him Joe, that the love he thought he had was real. It wasn't a name lovingly chosen by someone who truly cared about him. It was something programmed into her. Of course, the natural question is what's the difference between that and real life, but regardless, now that his illusions about himself have all been shattered, he then chose to live by the words given to him by that revolutionary repicant, that being willing to die for a good cause that's greater than yourself and for the benefit of others is the most human thing anyone can do. In this case, that's when he decides to defy both the Wallace Corp. and the replicant revolution by fighting to save Deckard so he can reunite a father with his daughter.

0:25 is where you can see his heart breaks. He realises his deep romantic relationship has been with a chatbot. Mariette lightly mocks him (and herself) for this saying he doesn't like real girls. There was more chance of a real romance between K and Mariette. Joi was a product. K was just the consumer. This scene is brutal but it prompts him to seek a higher purpose in the service of his own people.

To me it felt like at this point he didnt care about his people or other people or what they TOLD him to do. He realized that following others, such as his boss who ordered him to kill the girl, or Joi who told him to seek his origins, or even the replicants who told him to kill Deckard to save his people did not give him real purpose or meaning. He realized his true purpose and his humanity didnt reside in being the chosen one, or the one to save them all, it simply lied in doing what he himself felt was the right thing to do. He chose for himself, to save Deckards life and take him to his daughter. That gave him his purpose, his humanity. Quite similar to what Roy did in the end of the first Blade Runner imo.
@JonWilde2105
@JonWilde2105 11 ай бұрын
@@scrappy1416 That's way too nihilistic/pro regime for me tbh. At best you're scrubbing the wider meaning/impact and interpreting it as just some sort of weird Taken tribute. Let's put it like this - what value did Deckard's daughter have to a replicant like K over the daughter of any other human? None. Zero. K's job is not reuniting fathers and daughters. It is putting down rebellious replicants. If Deckard's daughter had any value to anyone in the entire movie apart from Deckard it wasn't due to her father. It was because her mother was a replicant and they were not supposed to be able to reproduce (or lie...hence the ambiguity about Luv). She was the miracle - a child of a replicant (not Deckard). That is why she was pursued by everyone. But what was this replicant miracle child doing? She was so well hidden that she was trapped in a bubble working to implant memories into replicants to better fulfil their purpose as slaves. Notice the similarity to K who was trapped in an apartment with an artificial waifu (policing him with false implants of a girlfriend) while he was policing replicants so they better fulfil their lives as slaves. The waifu expires. He finally recognises what he was interacting with was a cheap imitation of humanity. He gives his life to reunite Deckard with his daughter. By extension, Deckard explains to her that she is the miracle child...suddenly she's not living in a bubble. History for replicants is changed because their miracle, their saviour, is now aware of who they are and their purpose. She becomes motivated to change her world, and by extension the world. This is why I find all the "K doesn't matter" nihilistic nonsense to be ridiculous. Sure, the girl in the bubble we spend 2 or 3 minutes with is the real saviour. But K matters - he takes action and he changes the course of his peoples history. Without him, "the Chosen One" would have contently spent her life in a bubble contributing to the slavery of her people rather than freeing them.

I love this scene due to the way it deconstructs everything we’ve been led to believe, just like K. The one person pushing him to believe he is more than just a replicant, tellihn him he is special and giving him a real name is really just a program designed to be ‘everything you want to hear’, playing into his fantasy of being something greater. The scene even trivializes his name, it once meaning something to him, then becoming just the default name given to its owner. Truly good stuff

The theme of this movie is a dark one. We are not meant to come to the conclusion that Joi has free will the way K does. We are meant to come to the realization through the billboard that she is a reflection of K's true desires. Her death was not against her programming, because her programming was not one revolving around self-preservation, but one revolving around becoming who K truly wanted her to be. And the person K truly wanted her to be was someone who would sacrifice themselves to save another. It is why her self-sacrifice is so symbolic, it foreshadows K's own death. The movie is ultimately asking us what it means to be human. K realizes that despite being a replicant, he has free will, and he can make the choices that define who he is. He takes a look at his gun, and in that moment, decides between killing himself and sacrificing himself to save another. Joi's sacrifice allows K to realize his own humanity. Despite Joi’s artificiality, her relationship with K, and K’s loss, are very real. These complication that stretch our perceptions of what it means to be human are the ultimate narrative point of Joi's character.

I love the design in this scene. 0:22, when she says "I can fix that", the wave of light passes over behind his face, as does a single drop (tear) of blood fall from his neck, after sitting there for the entirety of the scene. We all notice the darkness he's shrouded in, being illuminated by her in the first place, but that smaller detail before the self-reflection and song build-up, discovery of purpose - if not a brief one - was really subtle. I think, for me, the line "What a day, huh?" is just as impactful as the rest. Many men go through their lives without someone who is genuinely concerned or supportive of their struggle(s), and are taught to put that aside to lift another up instead. Hearing someone say "Are you doing okay?" or sympathize with an exhausting day, means the world to many.

This scene hits me far harder now ever since I lost my fiancée last year due to medical malpractice. She was my everything; my kindness, my hope, my joy. She was bawling at the end of 2049 and when I asked her what was wrong, she said "I hope K and Joi are in heaven." I couldn't argue with her on the whole point of the movie whether or not they had souls to begin with but it really touched me - sometimes in the darkest of times there is some mercy and solace and everything will be alright in the end. It's a neverending nightmare, waking up everyday knowing you met the perfect girl and did everything you were supposed to and she isn't here anymore. But no matter what, I gotta keep moving on, finding whatever purpose I was put on here to do, until one day I'll be with her again. Rest in peace, Holly, my love, I will be with you again someday. Waking up each day while the Soul withers way. And Joi, telling him that he was special although she's programmed to make him feel that way. And The movie setting us up that Agent K was destined for a greater role in the universe. But he wasn't. It was never him at all. Freysa telling him "We all wish it was us" almost broke him. The truth could've just made Agent K, go away and live the remaining days in peace and away from it all well, until he was hunted down. But he chose not to, he chose his own destiny. And that made him truly "special". Best Character. from normal employee guy to legend. 10/10 represents today's reality. If there are no more heroes around, be one.

It’s all by design, to make you feel lonely, weak, and worthless. To fill you with anger and hatred towards others and yourself, because when you’re broken down you feel like you can’t change things. But the reality is you are the biggest threat to all the corruption and injustice in this world perpetrated by the powers that be, and it all starts with you recognizing your own worth and pushing forward to be a decent person despite all that may be dropped upon you.

I think this was the saddest part of the whole movie, where Joi was proved to be nothing more than a hologram trained to say things that made him feel loved but was nothing more than a program. She said he seems lonely, and it seems to me it was at this point Joe understood how lonely he was. As he was not in love with anyone before, but delusioned by the mere idea of the perfect girl that never existed. What makes this scene more special is that the audio (Dying for the right cause is the most human thing we could do), plays in the background. Hence, giving Joe his last mission to protect the chosen one. He never felt love which made him feel human, but dying for the right cause would.

Part of what makes this film so powerful is it stretches you to imagine what it means to love, what a life worth living is, and how the sacrifices we make can cost us everything but can give us so much…a sense of purpose and a goal. You can feel the emptiness, grief and loneliness in this moment without a word being said, it’s poetic, powerful and melancholic; like waves crashing on a shore. You wonder if the waves will wash him away into the tides and pull him into the depths themselves. You, almost, feel like you want him to have this, to be free from the pain and suffering he’s endured, but you also want him to fight to live on and survive…it’s gripping, immersive and chilling to the core.

@@spenkle431 thats with any movie, you can cut out one scene, in the final cut, and the movie around it would technically still make sense and you could infer whatever happened in that scene. A death scene could be cut and the movie would still work since we learn they die. Either way, I think this is a really important scene to establish his motivation. All this time he thought he was special, and he was that boy, then he learned his wasn't, his meaning was a lie. And now for the final nail in the coffin he learns his relationship with JOI might not have been as real or special as he thought, so he knows what he has to do because he has nothing else to lose, and he can still do the right thing even if he isn't special

Denis has even said this is the biggest turning point of the film it’s the most important moment for K and the viewers because in this moment K realizes it was all a lie All of it His dreams His love His hope for being the one So he pulls out the gun seemingly to put an end to it But it’s not his gun… It’s Deckards.. Then he remembered “Dying for the right cause….it’s the most human thing we can do” In that moment he had a choice Give up Or keep fighting And he chose the latter It’s even shown later in the film when Deckard and him are standing in the snow and he goes “Why are you doing this?” And K just replies “Go meet your daughter….” He didn’t do it for reward Or recognition He did it simply because it was the RIGHT THING TO DO And it isn’t until Deckard FINALLY actually sees his own Daughter That K closes his eyes and fades away……… This film not getting any recognition is one of the biggest crimes in cinema recently and I’m glad it’s getting the recognition it deserves……

Since I first saw this movie, ive had a weird connection to it. None of my friends seemed to like it that much, and I really didnt know why I liked it aside from the graphics which was what I appreciated the most. This particular scene, more exactly 0:17, have been my background image on my mac for quite the time, and it wasnt until this last time I watched it that I realized why I subconsciously was intrigued by this scene. Watching this movie after beeing on dopamine detoxe and living kinda off-grid, her words finally hit me. For too long Ive misused the solace internet and social meida brings, always looking for vitality and personality in the very things draining it from me, instead of facing myself to fix the problems at hand. Long story short, she cannot "fix that". Funny how it works though, as I still have the picture as my background.

Its sad, but Joi was as conscious as K. As when Joi was killed, Luv looked at Joi asking the questions "i hope you (Joi) enjoyed our product (K)". suggesting that Luv knows that Joi also has a form of consciousness (or atleast feelings). Also when K was unconscious, Joi would appear without the need to according to her coding (which is to satisfy K) since K could not know of her doing so. Showing she has a free will.

Denis Villeneuve also just might be the best director of the modern day. In addition to this one, he also directed Dune: Part One, which really took me by surprise by being a beautiful, artistic and deep adaptation of a book, and both of these movies really use tools like music, lighting, and long shots of the actors just living the character to convey emotion. The sort of movies that just don't get made anymore.

While I was devastated when I heard this movie was a box office bomb, I'm glad it found new life on netflix. This is the turning point of the movie where he realizes he dosen't have to be special to make a difference. It's an incredibly powerful message for a world that has grown so vast that sometimes we feel enfeebled by the sheer force of what we find ourselves up against.
