Psst... Freeman appears to have been President of the Birmingham Chess Club the year prior, in 1857, and served as a fellow committee member of a chess congress in Manchester with Howard Staunton after whom the well-known style of chess pieces is named. I found another reference to Freeman from five years later, as "Dr. James Freeman" of Edgbaston (which is very near Birmingham). At that point he was apparently a member of the co-operative committee of a group that called itself the British Chess Association. This is the only reference to Freeman in a Google Books e-book edited by Johann Jakob Löwenthal summarizing the games played at the Chess Congress of 1862. This message will self-destruct in five seconds.

@@giriiyer3968 finally someone who understands me! Yes man its such a unique bold, creative game where the quality morphy produces and freemans fighting spirit makes this game a memorable one. Yes freeman wasnt a master but i felt like he played like one and morphy was playing blindfolded but thats what i think made this game so great. Freeman probs knew he only had 1 shot to knock off morphy and brought his A game and morphy being blindfolded probably forced him to think real deep and use his visualization skills to the max. Freeman played like a 8/10, morphy a 9.5 i know theres millions of games but this truly is definitely my favorite.

@@nicholasanonymous6796 well let me first be clear about one thing. Don't judge players of that era bcoz you have not heard about or there is no information. History and documentation of history are hostage to the the writers especially when something like chess wasn't considered serious in those dayst to be documented. We must thank those diehard fans who left behind this rather hazy and sketchy piece of history, but the fault should not be laid at Freeman's doorstep. As for Freeman I thought he was a wonderful player and there must be more. I'm very curious to know more about him. Yes actually I saw this game first time in a local hindi channel in india but the presentation was very bad. Then I watched in HCV (great channel by the way) and I was floored by the stunning beauty and artistry of this game. Since then I've watched it innumerable times and the deacon game. @@giriiyer3968 brother i coudnt of agreed with you anymore. If anything i believe freeman played brilliantly and always had thought to match morphy to the bitter end was a achievement in itself, but as you said and which i agree with that morphy was the g.o.a.t. and yes we must thank everyone who helped to keep chess records, players and the game survive and keep their legacy alive through own efforts of recording who they were etc. Agreed and im sure there were many other games like this and players like freeman who were lost in time but with use of big data and the increase of chess i hope we can learn more about freeman and other great lost games and gentlemen.

Hello from Ireland. Don't know why we don't play more chess but here's maybe a cool fact. The Irish word for chess is "ficheall". Ficheall was an ancient game and nowadays we don't have the rules so we just call chess ficheall. Ficheall was used to decide many disputes in ancient Irish myth. (Ireland has two official languages: English and Irish. Internationally Irish might be more commonly known as Gaelic. Gaelic is just an anglicised version of "Gaeilge" the Irish word for Irish.) :-)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Edward_Freeman - - He was an American painter, but also a diplomat and author who lived primarily in Italy during this era. It seems likely to me from the Wikipedia entry, however, that he painted at least one of his paintings probably in London, see the sentence, "In his painting The Savoyard Boy in London (1865, Smithsonian American Art Museum). Freeman makes parallels between Italy’s internal struggle for unification with the American Civil War." - - That's under the heading "Artistic Career in Italy", first paragraph, in the Wiki article. So we have a notable named James Freeman occasionally visiting England during the same era - - and maybe some notables from Europe traveled to England to see Morphy play. And James Freeman was a fairly famous painter at the time. If it was an elite bunch of folks playing the simultaneous as you indicated James Edward Freeman, famous painter and diplomat visiting from Italy, could have easily been the hoodie guy.
