I played one of these rogues in a campaign. She was basically one of the Raven Queens *"Ravens",* given human form and placed on the mortal plane to recover a lost relic of hers. She talked to the dead as if they were alive and was weirdly polite and well behaved. In her words *"I am a good Raven, always helping".*

For me, the best way to use this subclass is this: Use the “Reborn” Lineage from Ravenloft with the origin of sharing a body with a spirit for the phantasmal limbs. Then, pair it with the “Haunted One” background with the harrowing event of the Apparition. Finally, give the character the “Shadow Touched” feat to incorporate elements of the Shadowfell.

I was once a Phantom Rogue but then I turned into a Drakewarden Ranger instead. A homebrewed Drakewarden that gets an undead companion instead. A Deathwarden. Cool undead flavour with better mechanics.

My last Character was actually a Phantom Rogue, never got a way to actually use them effectively but i ended up getting attached to it That character was basically a younger Gomez Addams. He was a part of a Family/Covenant that believed on tying your Soul to the Family. So as every member died, they became a Ghostly Spectre that would accompany and serve as Help and Guides to the Newer Generation. Dante was the last of his house (for backstory reasons) and as such, he was the sole recipient of most of his family's ancestors spectres ghostly echoes, teaching him stuff and using abilities to help them in battle.

I love the Phantom Rogue, but I do wish it got the Tokens earlier. Such a cool and thematic ability that only comes into play near the end of alot of campaigns.

That's the problem with rogues in general. They get so many core abilities, it crowds out any subclass abilities. Level 9? That's a six level gap. Everyone else is getting their second subclass ability at level 6 or 7, but you have to wait 2 more levels. Don't get me wrong, I like evasion and more expertise, but at the expense of slower progression? I don't know, I just don't know.

@@ericpeterson8732 I think some abilities could just be combined or reordered, do Uncanny Dodge and Evasion REALLY need to be two, separate abilities? Couldn't we just get them at the same time? Then we can just, move some abilities down, we can get our tier two subclass feature at 7 (or 6 if we make it switch places with Expertise), we could get Reliable Talent at 9th level. That does leave space for, another ability....... fuck it, why SHOULDN'T Rogues get Extra Attack? It wouldn't make them "overpowered" or anything. Though that might get me into a conversation about how I hate abilities that don't stack or offer alternatives when they aren't allowed to stack.

An interesting interaction I found out about with the Phantom Rogue, courtesy of D&D Shorts, is the feat Keen Mind. Presumably whether this works or not is, as always, down to the DM, but once you've heard the information from a ghost to gain a skill proficiency, then swap to a new one, then Keen Mind should, in theory, allow you to remember the previous knowledge, and therefore retain the previous proficiency. Not the most overpowered thing, there's plenty of ways to get proficiency with every skill, but it's a nice little idea to toss into the mix

You made me realise how cool this subclass is, right now im planning on a multiclass 14/15 levels phantom rogue and 5/6 levels in bard college of spirits or undead warlock, they all work so good, im considering even a tomb or death cleric but personally im not a big fan of clerics. (i choose this subclasses manly because they learn speak with dead) the concepts is just a weird kid that as a natural connection with death (hearing things from the dead, seeing paranormal stuff without being scared or getting weirded out ecc,) having a sort of Tim Burton vibe to the character, the most part of the character needs to build up during the campaing, is only mission is find out why he has this connection with the dead, i dont know what race choose for him tho, everythings is good, even homebrew, but not lineage like dhampir, hexblood or reborn unfortunately. I accept suggestion for the race/build (im not looking for a powerplay build, the important is that the different feature of subclasses dont overlaps and its a good combination for roleplay and mechanics, im always looking for a jack of all trades type of gameplay). Modification: i think about the race and the shadar-kai looks fitting, maybe i could do even the 5/6 levels in hexblade or raven queen (UA version in the camaping im playing is accepted) warlock, but i didnt want to have this character too deity/patron (like the raven queen) pendant cause in my opinion with long campaign it makes roleplay reduntant sometime.

I think the Scout is still the best Rogue, atleast on the higher levels, throwing 2 sneakattackson everyturn aslong as they are different targets is a lot of damage. Earlier levels the Swashbuckler is very hard to beat.

I'd like to see some of the Unearthed Arcana classes like Theurgy Wizard and Oath of Treachery Paladin. The Divine Soul is my favorite of all the Sorcerer subclasses, so it would interesting to watch a video about a wizard who got to the seminary and another option for a paladin who is not necessarily an honored warrior in shining armor. Half-Hag Green Hag Silverquil Student 11 Rogue Phantom - Wails from the Grave - Tokens of the Departed Feats - Menacing - Warcaster - Blade Mastery - Master of Disguise - Actor Train extra feats in the social skills, Empathic, Diplomat, Silver Tongued, Performer. Whispers of the Dead extra skill is "stuck" on Disguise Kit. Illusory Appearance causes them to awaken looking like the same unknown individual when ever not specifically choosing an appearance during the rest. Presumably it is the "owner" of the disguise kit skill. Only 4 spells preselected to accomplish primary combat theme. Mage Armor, Longstrider, Gift of Alacrity and Haste. Both Blade cantrips should be selected. Find Familiar, Darkness, and Invisibility are free spells. A full combat familiar with 3 attacks a turn, a nasty poison carrier to those attacks 100 foot flying speed, and good AC supported by a terror inspiring sneak attacking Form of Dread with a Menacing second attack every turn. 4x Attack rolls, 2x Fear effects, 3x Poison, upto 1x Sneak Attack(6d6) carrier with potential Wails of the Grave(3d6) and a blade spell each turn. 3 Warlock/Undead/Chain - Dread Form - Investment of the Chain Masters - Voice of the Chain Master - "unarmored sprite" -1AC 6 Sorcerer/Shadows - Twinned Haste! - Hounds of Ill Omen - Coffeelock Unarmored Sprite with Mage armor = 17AC Sprite takes reaction attack when you use a bonus action and it uses your spell save DCs. With haste this adds another attack and brings AC to 19. Upto three attacks per round. 17sp needed to provide a full combat of resources via Coffeelock loop. Only 2SP needed in the combat, the rest is through bonus slots. With enough bonus slots(18x 1st, 6x 2nd) built up can repeat this combat 3 times without using any other resources or stopping to recharge. Precast Mage Armor and Longstrider on Sprite.(4sp) Precast Gift of Alacrity, Mage Armor and Longstrider on self.(6sp) Consider precasting Flock of Familiars. 1st Round Action - Twin Haste(2+5sp) Bonus - Dread Form Haste Action - Attack w fear Sprite - 2x Attacks w poison 2nd through 10th Round Bonus - command sprite Action - Attack w Fear Haste - Replace with Menacing Sprite - 3x attacks with poison *4 attacks, 2 fear, 3 poison and a potential sneak attack with potential Wails of the Grave* +2 poison attacks Flock of Familiars. Hounds of Ill Omen with their chance to knock people prone, also via your spell save DC. If entering battle with spell slots to burn these are cheap to summon, have pact tactics advantage, and are self controlling once summoned, adding as many trip attacks to your fights as you want. Thier save is vs Str, so great for weak caster and sneaky types. Giving the Sprite items with which it can cast Hex adds damage and helps lower enemy saving throws. If ever Reliable Talent isn't enough for a succesful roll can Use Magical Guidance for one more chance. Can swap from Silverquil Student to Witherbloom Student to get access to Greater Restoration and thus the stronger Coffeelock effect, but thematically allow the character to avoid waking up as looking like an unknown person so often.

Feel like this subclass is a really obvious edgy choice. But I wanna run a character that goes against that. Still keeping the whole dead vibe, but instead it’s a young sweet character who’s always been able to see ghosts (for…. Reasons. IDK, can work with the DM). She uses this to help her be a mortician who helps the dead with their wishes, mainly like passing on love to their families, that kind of thing. Though now I think about it, having a detective type character that uses their abilities to solve crimes. Like they may not be super smart like the mastermind, but still effective (“hey dead body, who murdered you?”). That could also be fun.

Yeah, it's hard to find examples of imbuing your weapons with ghost magic. It's pretty niche, artwise. Glowing weapons look very similar to energy weapons and rogues use blades, so..... Cut him some slack. It was still a good video.
