YES!! These tips are sooo helpful! It really is like a performance. I don't like filming in front of other people either and I have a major in musical theatre! 😂 I've been working on bumping up my personality - your analogy of the mucus guy taking it all down a notch - hilarious! I've been thinking of it like the phrase 'the camera adds 5 pounds', the camera adds five levels of 'boring' to what we feel like we're giving when we film. NO MORE BORING VIDEOS! Super helpful, thanks, Jessica! I actually filmed a quite boring video last week (it was a beauty tutorial and I was under the weather). But i used music and editing to punch it up and it's doing better than I expected when I first saw my footage. Editing helps if nothing else!

I love inserting photos if I mentioned something specific in my chit-chat/sit down videos, or gifs, memes, etc! For example, I was talking about tater-tot hot dish and put a pic of it on the screen (with a cute little bubble pop sfx) because some people might not know what I was talking about-it adds a bit of visual interest while doing like 0.2% more editing work imo

Reminds me of what I learned in theatre school! The difference between stage acting vs. television acting. I think the gremlin is an attention span thing for KZbin and social media. So there it is. We gotta be more dynamic and creative to catch people’s attention nowadays. Also, we’re often distracted doing other stuff when we’re scrolling social media these days. So, it needs to be a bit more catchy.

Maybe personality is like makeup: gotta pump it up for the camera to even be able to pick it up! Also cameras don't pick up vibes, I think a lot of people don't understand how much of what they communicate is through pure presence.

I am just starting off here so much to learn - I definitely have never been told I am bored we have very similar spicy personalities 😅🌶 However it also depends on the day, mood, energy level - So just like my students get bored if I dont make sing along songs etc. 😂❤ Its kinda nice for someone who has always felt "extra" that I need to be even more extra on here! Only concern is my mic 🎤 and hurting peoples ears I think thats why I have actually toned it down for that reason - So I need to do the opposite 😅

I must be the only person who cannot stand the constant screen activity, like the zoom in then zoom back and add a bunch of animated crap on the screen, no. I like a regular talking head without all the changes. However, I did find the voice projection and animate yourself a little more (kick it up a notch or two) information very valuable. Thank you!

I think too much is definitely too much depending on the person but sometimes it’s needed, for sure! All we have to go off of is analytics and when the goal is keeping people watching longer, you’ve got to find a way to do that and statistically, that keeps people watching longer

Ironically, I’ve performed in front of literally thousands upon thousands of people in my life, internationally, both as a solo violinist and in a ballet company… I’ve also talked to lecture halls full of people. So WHYYYY do I have camera issues!!! 😅😅 Makes no bloody sense 🤦🏼‍♀️ I always feel like I’m sitting down with a PowerPoint lmao … but I personally do NOT like all the wild zooms and jump cuts - I actually turn videos off many times when they are over done (I’ve actually been put off of some of your recent videos for this reason…. Sorry!! 😬) But I do like the idea of moving the chair and dialing up one’s energy! Ps I’m from the Buffalo area, we have one pissed off and sad city today 😅😅

Is Jessica unaware that she is employing a powerful psychological strategy in her 'performance' that is not listed? Take note of how she speaks... the pace and rhythm, the pauses and emphasis, the inflections. She uses these key verbal cues when speaking. For example, she will slow right down and emphasis a word or sentence to get across the important key points in this video she is trying to convey. Loved this NO MORE BORING VIDEOS, glad the awkward point of 'boring' was addressed as it seems to be the one that is avoided when advice is given.
