The last one, #6 is the major breakthrough I had. I would have pages full of something like the torso and yet it never felt like I was improving. Because I could never get it to match the reference I was following. But then I'd "give up" and then just go to try and draw something else, like a full body of one of my original characters, I found that I was applying the stuff I learned from the torso practice. And the torso of my character would look way better than it did in old pictures. Even better than the reference studies I had been doing. Because I wasn't trying to compare it to a reference. The final result wasn't perfect. But it helped rejuvenate my motivation to see the actual results.

My experience on How to learn anatomy 1- Learn to observe carefully 2 - start drawing basic form 3 - learn basic perspective 4 - draw basic forms in perspective Start study anatomy (start with bones) 5 - learn gesture drawing continue to study anatomy (start to learn superfacial muscles) 6 - learn body parts as basic forms keep studying anatomy (origin and insertion of those muscles + names) 7 - apply basic forms to your gesture 8 - apply anatomy to your forms 9 - learn how light and shadow work on forms 10 - apply light and shadows to each muscle form ....... Repeat all these levels until you master them

Are the names really necessary? As long as you remember the proportion, what you call it doesn't seem all that important.
@TheAzhighwayman7 ай бұрын

Nicely written! Id like to add that you dont need to know the name of every single muscle, but the ones that are visible in drawings (unless u mostly draw skeletons though)
@LARADEKA7 ай бұрын
In gesture drawings, shape and form actually matter. It's how in storyboards, the figures are sketched quickly versus the final animatic. Sometimes I draw the head first, but I am obsessed with drawing chests, then go to the limbs next, including toes and fingers... which is pain. I had to use references that involve dynamic expression, especially art like Splatoon, just to utilize the line of action. And I still test some methods just to achieve something different.

Have you seen "How to Draw the Marvel Comics Way" by John Buscema and Stan Lee (1978)? Even if not drawing for comics, it has good lessons about anatomy, perspective, and composition. There are professionals making your mistake #1 and covering it with flashy rendering and fancy computer tricks (glow effects etc.) I'm glad you discovered and corrected on your own. Question : there are many instance where only one poart of the muscle is visible and the other part is hidden under another muscle. Should I learn what the muscle look on the outside first or learn the shape of the muscle in its entirety from the get go (should I also learn about the way the muscle attach to the bone and about the skeleton in general)?
@theartofnemo7 ай бұрын
Great question! It depends on where you are. Like, can you reasonably draw the outer shape, even without knowing the details? I would say get the generic wrapper first, then, once you are comfortable with it, you can get into the nitty gritty and learn insertions and origins (and overlaps)
@madmouse44007 ай бұрын
@@theartofnemo thanks for the advise. One last question: what learning structure would you recommend me? What are the steps Ithat according to you are efficient while also requiring effort , that leads somewhere with enough work and are not just meandering from tutorial to tutorial , only copying what I see without actually learning (understanding) anything. I started to learn drawing very recently and planned a few steps in this order: Shape/geometry>Proposition>perspective>gesture>anatomy And my "short term" goal with all of that is to be able to draw the female body only (in various poses , positions and angles . No face , clothing or color for now because I've heard that having a precise goal and focusing on one thing at a time is good for learning).
@theartofnemo7 ай бұрын
@@madmouse4400 I'll have a video about it soon! But really it depends on where exactly you are. Did you see the other video about the fastest way to learn? There is a ways to self assess your position. I really don't know where you are so it's hard to tell. What is your aspiration? Any artist or IP you want to draw like?

@@theartofnemo I'm still at drawing balls , cylinders and boxes , so not very far into the beginner level.
