I keep trying to sew clothes with a self designed pattern, it makes me laugh. I have patterns but hate trying to read them... saying that, my late mother was a fantastic sewist, I only came to sewing 4 years after her death, the beginning of this video, reminded me of that loss... but... even though you are lots younger than I, you comfort me as I think of you as my 'sewing mother' in the absence of my Beloved mother. Who taught You to sew

My pet sewing rule is that straight cutting equals straight stitches. I broke this rule as a beginner. I thought it’s okay if the cutting is wonky, I can still sew it the right way. I found out the hard way that was wrong!!! You need a neatly cut edge to be able to guide it on the throat plate markings

@erickloss7324 I also learned this lesson the hard way.

Don’t skip the step of proper marking and notching of your fabric. Use the appropriate marker that will survive the sewing process and not disappear before you get to it. Note that some marks will need to be on the right side of the fashion fabric, not just the back. 😊

As a teenager in the 1960s I worked in a suede boot factory on an industrial sewing machine. One Friday at the end of the day I had a piece of rag wrapped around my index finger cleaning the machine, wasn't concentrating and suddenly a big thud and yanked my hand away with the broken needle through my finger which felt like a really thick piece of metal...and rag attached too. Almost fainted lol A&E numbed it with liquid not an injection then pulled it out, so I empathise with you 😊 I'm now 77 but still hear that thud when I think about it 🙉 I've started quilting last month, and everything you've spoken about, applies to that too. You look well and hope you're keeping well. 💞

Ouch! They injected the base of my finger but i screamed when they tried to pull it out and then they gave me gas and air which worked. I am doing very well thank you. 🤩

Ouch, my biggest fear is to sew a finger! I use that purple thing religiously like a stylus (sliletto) when bag making and during close work like ( easing) installing a sleeve. My mom never let us touch the sewing machine just iron seam allowances and hems. I’m guilty of pins in the mouth!😂

Don’t forget those length measurements also. Your pattern sizes will be bigger than store bought things. However store bought things can make you look bigger like in pants. Sewing you can alter things to give you a more flattering figure. Also remember those finished pattern sizes. You are still looking so nice with your weight loss. I can’t wait till your settled in your new place and sew yourself something really nice and show it off to all of us.

Hi Claire, have to agree with other comments here you are looking amazing your carnivore diet is really suiting you. My mother worked in a clothing manufacturing job back in the '60s she too managed to sew through her finger, not nice. As I do some patchwork I use clips quite often rather than pins. Something I bought this year that makes it much easier, and probably more accurate to take my own measurements, is a self measuring tape. pull it around yourself and latch the end in place, let go and then unlatch to read the measurement. Just google self measuring tape, so useful.

I think we always learn about preshrinking the hard way. I got some beautiful fabric from my grandmother (may have been linen) that I made into a lined blazer and lined trousers. They fit absolutely beautifully, but shrank about a FOOT! Worthless! This was about in 1966.

@mermaidstears48972 ай бұрын
Listening to this as I’m re-sewing because I didn’t measure my side gores properly, and I’m just lucky there was barely enough linen left to recut them! Expensive, useless, leftover pieces later… Also, my rule (as an “extended size” sew- er): measurements are just numbers. They help ensure an accurate fit. They don’t determine your worth, your attractiveness, or your character. They’re numbers. That’s it. They’re a tool to help you get a good fit on your clothing. A tool, nothing more. Don’t make them more important than they are.

Also using the fabric called for on the pattern. It won't work if you use a woven when it calls for a stretch fabric unless you make adjustments to the pattern.

Great sewing tips, as usual! And your skin looks amazing!! You must be taking good care of it. About sewing over pins: it makes your stitches wonky even if you don't break a needle. Also, get in the habit of placing pins perpendicular to the edge of the fabric, with the point facing the needle, so you can grab the head of the pin and pull it out easily as you sew up to it.

use fabric that’s suggested on the pattern. (woven vs knit fabric) I recently sewed using woven fabric for a pattern that suggested knit (jersey) fabric. The top I made was too tight! Lesson learned.

These are great points, and it was a good reminder to me of things I knew, but don't always remember to put into practice.. One thing I learned (that ties in with the concept of pressing as you stitch) is that investing in a professional level steam iron (or at least a good quality one) is a game changer in terms of results.I'm sure this might sound basic to some people, but I honestly didn't realize that my iron was wimpy and not very effective til I upgraded.

Sewing over pins might (will ) damage your plate and take the machine out of time. The burrs in the plate will ruin fine fabrics $$$. Costly repair, too.

Great tips! Yes, size doesn't count - I've even had different results within the same pattern company using what is supposed to be the "same size," but it can vary from pattern to pattern for some reason, so measurements always need to be checked even when you think you know what size you wear in a particular pattern company.

a little over a year ago, i looked away while sewing and the needle immediately went through my thumb. it ended up breaking into two pieces within my finger when it hit my bone. the piece sticking out of my finger was easy to remove but the piece that was within my thumb had the doctor digging in my finger for a couple minutes XD it still hurts when i press my finger the wrong way. ALWAYS keep your eyes on your sewing!!! a very valuable lesson

I’m working on my first project, a linen waistcoat, and it’s taking ages. Between making two muslins, being meticulous about cutting, pinning, and measuring, plus all the practice stitches, I’ve been at it for two months but I have learned a ton of useful things.

Always check finished garment measurements on the pattern. Sometimes the design ease makes it far bigger than you'd like. Garment ease was something that changed the way I sew when I learned about it. It's easy to look up the amount of actual ease you need before deciding which size to make. It is listed for fitted, semi fitted, and loose fitting. You can use this information to determine how much extra design ease has been added to the pattern and choose a size that gives you the fit you want. Most patterns have information on the description telling you which fit it is (ie semi fitted knit dress in 3 lengths). Look up the chart and compare finished garment measurements before you decide which size to cut out. This is especially important with the big 3. I have not sewn indie patterns as much, so I don't know how it affects them. I have been extremely frustrated by the images on the pattern not properly depicting the design ease in the pattern, and ending up swimming in a garment that should have fit well. Thought I'd share for any new sewists who might be having this problem!

My first rule in my sewing room is no food or drink. I once had a big glass of cranberry juice on the sewing table and it got knocked over on the fabrics. So I leaned my lessons and now nothing to drink or eat in the sewing room. Get up and go to the kitchen and eat or drink.

Use plenty of pins when cutting out. Fabric is prone to move during the cutting process causing a smaller size potentially.

I don’t use pins when cutting out. I do use lots of pattern weights though. If unsure if fabric will move I tape the fabric down with masking tape.

Read the safety instructions in your sewing machine manual, the manual for my Pfaff Creative Icon lists 'wear safety glasses ', in case a needle breaks whilst you are sewing and part of it flies towards your face. I have always worn glasses whilst sewing, so not too bothered for myself. I would recommend that people who do not wear glasses normally consider getting some lightweight safety glasses and using them when sewing. I have just lost an eye to cancer and am learning to cope, threading a needle is difficult now my depth perception is reduced. Please protect your eyes from a preventable accident.

Hi..I sewed over my right thumb when I was 5 yrs old a few stitches.. my mom’s machine was controlled by your leg(mine has a foot pedal) I didn’t scream..just saying mom until she got to me and moved my leg..she got the thread out and cleaned my thumb and put a band-aid on it..by 6th grade I could make my own clothes..my mom taught me that part of sewing and my great grandma and grandma taught me how to quilt..
