You may cancel this service at any time by contacting our support team." Please have her clarify this and update it on their website so there's no ambiguity. A "flat-rate one-time fee" is not the same as an annual fee per their website.

We're investigating because we know lawyers that charge a monthly fee for fiscal representation. It might be something that's legally required until you're here and can transfer the responsibility to yourself.

Hi Y Everette and Rebecca, This is Kathleen from Bordr. Thank you for the feedback! I totally understand how this can be confusing. Will give you full context here and update our website accordingly. In order to provide our NIF service, there are actually two services that we need to offer: 1. Requesting the NIF with the Portuguese tax office This is exactly what it sounds like. We submit a request to register a NIF on your behalf. Once we receive the NIF, we forward it to you. This is a one-time service and after you get your NIF you will not need it again. 2. Fiscal Representation This is the part that can lead to some confusion. Portugal requires non-EU residents to elect a Portuguese permanent resident or company to act as their fiscal representative when applying for a NIF. This person / company acts as the intermediary between the Portuguese tax office and you, ensuring that you receive any notices regarding your taxes. While having a fiscal representative is required at the time of applying for a NIF, it is optional after you get a Portuguese residential address. We include 12 months of fiscal representation when our customers order a NIF. For most people, this gives them enough time to get a Portuguese residential address and cancel ongoing fiscal representation services. It is indeed possible to get your NIF for a flat fee of $150. You simply need to send us your Portuguese residential address within 12 months and you can avoid any ongoing fiscal representation fees. I hope that helps. Hi Georg D. You're very welcome! It's not that you shouldn't be applying for the NIF as much as it is spending money unnecessarily. You'll have to pay a fiscal representative to maintain the NIF because you don't have a physical address in Portugal yet. If you really want to get one now and don't mind paying an additional $150 each year you need fiscal representation, then you CAN get a NIF. This is great price! Back in 2017 - I has to pay about $650 to get POA/NIF application and initial fiscal representation. Then we had to pay €500 per year for fiscal representation (though I had no taxable activities in Portugal)- per person. Now we have our rental activity in Porto, our rental management takes care of all of these - which is saving us a lot of $. BTW we are still in the U.S. - hoping to get D7 in 3-5 years. Crossing our fingers D7 will remain to be a fairly simple process 🙇🏻‍♀️

Thanks, Yumiko! We've seen some of those prices. When we first moved and didn't have our NIF (back when you could do that), we saw some crazy prices but not as high as $650! That would be so sweet because what I'm doing is I have a motorhome and I want to register it in Portugal. I spoken to a firm they can do it for me but they don't do the NIF. And it seems like I would need an address in Portugal for the NIF but if not that would be so amazingly good. I live in the camper so I don't really need a rental or home.

And the other question is about the quick comment regarding having to have a bank account BEFORE we can apply for the D7 Visa, is that now the case? Unfortunately, right now, you can't. Before the pandemic and the visa process changed, you could get one for free. You would go to a Finanças office (usually first thing in the morning), pull a number, wait for your number to be called, speak to someone about getting a NIF, get NIF same day for free. As of right now, you have to get that NIF from abroad to file for your paperwork (visa). When we started vlogging about this move, it was the old way, when we arrived, things literally started changing by the week. We ended up having to have someone file for our NIF online for us. So we basically had to do a hybrid of DIY and using a company like Bordr. It cost us around €50 because we had to get a POA drafted and the POA notarized. - Josh & Kalie

Hi Carol, Kathleen from Bordr here. You do not need an address in Portugal to apply for a NIF. As a US citizen, all your need is your US passport and proof of address in the US

Hi Carol, when Kalie and I applied, we used our US info to get our NIF and then when we had our SEF appointment, they updated the system and our Portugal address is now the one connected to the NIF, does that make sense? So for you as an American, you can use bordr.io with your US address and once you get here and get a physical address, you can switch it online or at the SEF appointment (from our experience). - Josh & Kalie

Hey Luis, we would recommend just waiting and saving your money. Kathleen also commented along side us on another post and said the same thing because you'll have to pay a company like hers or a lawyer to maintain the NIF because you don't have a local address. So to clarify, you use your US information to get the NIF but Bordr will be your fiscal representative until you get a Portugal address to register your NIF with. Does that make sense? In saying all that, the only reason you'd need a NIF as far out as you're planning to be here is let's say you're waiting to buy a property that's under construction and that will be ready in 2024 when you want to move here. You'll need a NIF to buy that property. So sorry for the long winded explanation - Josh & Kalie

Unfortunately, not anymore. It's a requirement for immigration so while it's free, people outside of the EU can't travel to Portugal to get a visa to live without one. Plus the Finanças offices are doing things online so making an appointment has been incredibly difficult since October. We had an appointment and then they cancelled it and told us to complete the application online but you need a NIF to enter the portal so we had to have someone else that holds a NIF go in for us. So while it's still free to get a NIF from a Finanças, you need someone to get one for you, and that's not free. - Josh & Kalie
