Agree with you Peter. IDGuy has been my favourite for a few years now. Genuinely great channel and very decent person. I agree with you. We should get what really speaks to us, instead of "stepping stone" watches, or as some youtubers say "watches you must own" or "categories of watches you must own"... get a dress watch, get a dive watch, get a Moonwatch... and so on..... I love your attitude to this hobby

Good point well made 👍 . One of the problems with social media is there is so much attention on the high end watches, people think they have to spend thousands, but a well chosen inexpensive watch that you really like can give as much pleasure, like the G-Shock I am wearing at the moment.

I bought this watch back in 2011 after I was done with my first graduate program. Yes, it didn’t have an in house movement back then but I fell in love with the design. Mine is a white face with gold accent. It was my first expensive time piece. I wired $5,300 (a lot of money to a recent grad) to an AD. It’s being serviced by IWC now for a re haul. Somehow there’s water intrusion so I paid $770 to get everything redone. Top notch service by the brand so far. I bought it because I loved the design, didn’t know much about the brand or anything else to be honest. The memories of it formed throughout the last decade made it a forever piece in my collection as well.

This is so true. You can admire and appreciate this or that watch without buying it, or even wanting to buy it. And equally you can feel nothing for a watch, or a whole watch brand, irrespective of what social media tells you (personally I have no love whatsoever for IWC for a variety of reasons, but it’s ok for your own mileage to vary). No-one should feel pressure to buy something because an ambassador, or so-called ‘influencer’, or billboard at the side of a race track, or reviewer, or whoever, persuades you that a watch will somehow make you complete, if in reality it doesn’t speak to you. Be true to your own genuine opinions, not what others tell you to think, and you will never be disappointed in your choices.

I really don't get how most watch enthusiast can reasonably keep growing their collections at the rate they are doing so :D. Not that I envy them for it, or anything like that. I quite prefer it my way. Keeping my collection super down to earth, at only 3-4pieces(plus a G shock :D ). That's why I like your channel, you seem to be a person who inserts some sort of logic to this inherently illogical, emotional rollercoaster that we call "appreciation of horology".

Best video on watches I've seen in a long time. Now I understand more why people ask me what other watch I'd pick in the same price range... Never crossed my mind. I'm a poor enginnering student, so I will have money one day, but for now, all the watches I've bought has been watches I'd want to own if money was no object, as I save the others for later. Not that I have any watches over 1500 euros on my wish list thinking about it... maybe one day I fall for a Grand Seiko that comes out. Otherwise, I am more than contempt with the 8 I already have from Seiko, Citizen, Laco, Tissot and Casio and maybe the more expensive one I want one day, but that is also sub- 1500 euros. 😄

Totally agree on all points! It's not the smart thing to do, but, this hobby, like many seemingly irrational interests to others, is motivated by the heart. I see something I like, I will likely go for it. BUT, more recently, taking a more thoughtfully measured approach and truly gauging 4 things 1) Does the watch's design visually move me? #1, I really have to love the feeling I get of wearing a particular timepiece on my wrist. 2) Can I truly imagine the watch will get a justified amount of wrist time in the long run? 3) Kind of a new one for me.. but, I should really consider which watch(es) currently in the collection I may have to sell that may make this new watch worthy to take it(their) place(es)? I think whatever goes out should be replaced by something of greater, if not equal, in personal value. 4) Can I truly afford this without doing any personal, relationship or financial damage to myself? I will say a fair number of watches can't be seen or tried on in person. So, to scratch that itch and know and experience a particular watch, sometimes just have to bite the bullet and buy it and then know.. but, it really has to be something really wanting to experience in person. I basically take all watch purchases as potential monetary losses if and when I decide to sell them. Other than the most crazy sought after watches, majority will suffer 2nd hand value depreciation. HOWEVER, if and when it takes time to sell a watch, I look at the difference of what I paid and what I sold and take the difference as cost to "rent" the watch for X amount of time period. On a similar note mentioned in this video, I kind of get annoyed when someone posts they have X amount of money, what watch should I buy?.. especially when the near open bank account are in the $1000s.. 1) Who the hell knows what you like? Throw out a bone and narrow the choices. At least tell us a few brands and/or models you've been considering. As such, if it's such an open ended question, then.. 2) Why the hell haven't you thought about how you're planning to spend your hard earned and saved money? I mean do you really have a passion for the hobby or are you just looking for suggestions to show some flex for spending X amount of $$? Idk?.. whatever the amount of $$ one has planned to save up, surely one should be daydreaming about what watch(es) he/she would very much like to spend that money on. I already daydream about watches I don't have (and may never have) the money to spend on. Lastly, you're one of the most sensible and honest KZbinrs within the watch video space. Most of us can agree to this and we look forward to many more excellent videos from you.

the thing is, if i like two or three different watches and my budget only permits one purchase, then of course i will sit down and compare the design, the craftsmanship, how much i would get on 2nd market when i'm tired of it etc. buying every piece you enjoy looking at is not a luxury most of watch enthusiasts have. in fact, if impulsive purchase is a much more prevalent consumer behaviour than it actually is, i bet my left kidney that all the watch companies will hike their price to oblivion to take advantage of us. while i very much understand and to a certain degree support the sentiment that you shouldn't let "market value" tell you what watch you should and shouldn't buy, i doubt it's a good practice to follow for people who don't own 2 yachts and 4 holiday houses.

I'm still watching, but the reason I explore in the price range after finding a watch I like is to discover new things to better inform my purchasing decision. I want to make sure there isn't another watch I like better in a price range I've just determined is possible for me to shop in. Most of the time, it shows me a bunch of stuff I don't want to buy, but sometimes taking the time to look pays off for me. I had my mind pretty set on the SMP 300m for a couple years as the luxury watch I'd get if I got one. In the last few months, I've considered maybe actually buying it, so I started really exploring the price range. I looked at a ton of watches from lots of brands and finally decided to go to an AD and try on a planet ocean. I'd written it off entirely because of that 16mm thickness I read about so many times online, but I tried it on and loved it. Doesn't feel thick or heavy to me at all. Feels really similar to my daily wear GSAR on bracelet. It's now my target, and not because it's more expensive than the SMP, just because I like it more. I get what you're saying about it being silly to lump in watches that cost a similar amount when you make a decision on one you really like, but it sort of assumes you already know all there is to know about your options. That very well may be true for some people who have been in this game longer and more thoroughly than myself, but I personally feel I need to go look at dozens of brands to see what they offer at a similar price point to reinforce my confidence in making such a major purchase.

This is very relatable Peter. I have reached a turning point in my watch journey after buying a fairly shitty 1990’s YEMA Superman II Worldtime (great name) from the depth of eBay for not much money at all. Even after being brought back to life by the good people at the Pole Horloger, it’s still a shitty watch : inaccurate 30 year old Seiko quartz movement, dead lume, nothing aligns properly and the crown was extremely uncomfortable until I wiped out half the knurling with sandpaper pad fitted to a drill. But boy, this little bugger has a lot of charm, a bit like a beaten up VW Beetle you learned to drive with 30 years ago. Suddenly, the idea of spending 5, 8, 10 or more €k on a watch became almost shocking, because it would never bring a level of enjoyment in line with its price tag. I also have sold my 1998 Speedmaster, which I realized I only had acquired because of YT and IG pressure and feel more comfortable now.

This wasn't a review as much as a really thoughtful piece on watch collecting. Still, I'd first like to acknowledge that although I can see in your footage just how impressively well put together this watch is, generally IWC does not stylistically appeal to me. There will be exceptions and the cleaner Portugiesers do come closer to my preferences, but within IWC there remains a trend for larger watches, which is also a dislike of mine as it doesn't suit me, and this watch still looks too big to me. What I do especially like is the way they implemented those dots and numerals. That looks absolutely amazing and I'd have more of that please. There is a classic elegance to the rest of the watch, but not something that particularly piques my interest. So, yes, I'm nkst curious to know which watch was sacrificed for this! ;-) With that out of the way, on to the thought piece. First of all, I think it's important to acknowledge that to think that if one really wants a 10k USD watch and that really speaks to me etc etc, only if I'm in a financially really privileged position would that become a instant buy, let alone a first (significant) buy. I think it is sadly true in this hobby that we recognise that we often can't truly afford or just simply not (yet) justify the expense on something that speaks to us. In my case, I could say that I have become interested in GS against my own expectations, but it still sits at a starting price point of about 3 times what I ever spent on a watch. Rationally one could thus argue I could have afforded it, as collectively I have already spent it anyway, and that would be true. But it is also the case that I would not have been equally interested or appreciative of what GS offers without having spent more carefully on a variety of other much more affordable pieces that appealed to me within my perceived means first. Now, I'm inching closer to accepting that perhaps one day I would be ready to spend that amount on a watch, presumably also keeping a smaller collection, but I'm still not quite there yet. Because I only buy watches that appeal to me, yet also recognise I have a lot to learn and try, and without ordering them in very few opportunities to try what I am interested in or able to afford, so far I have not let go of a single one. I think that is about to change, because via trying things I can now recognise qualitative differences that do matter to me in wearing them and there are two or three that I feel have either done their job for me on that journey or I have not bonded with equally. Also, the further I progress, the less automatic I think that feeling of bonding is, yet, ultimately I take pleasure in the variety in my proverbial box as a collection of designs and I may for now remain with more than 8 watches. I also strongly feel that I should always wear/use what I own, so there is also an unknown and perhaps fluctuating upper limit. All good insights. Now, for the question of do I compare watches when I have found one that appeals to me. Yes, I do. But I also think that is a logical consequence of being deeper into this interest. For me, it means, I have a rather long list of desirable pieces that I have not (yet) bought. Only some of them are so aspirational that I may never buy them. So, certainly before making a next purchasing decision or indeed any purchasing decision I try to reflect on that list to both justify the cost and value (even if connection comes first) and to assure myself that it would feel right to prioritise this now while not having prioritised others, possibly of similar or even lower prices, on that list. So, all in all, I agree with you and those you cite, and yet I think there is a journey that also acts a little as stepping stones and it seems logical that there won't ever just be one main watch I'd be interested in, so comparison for the purpose of deciding on a priority makes sense. I don't think that really detracts from a connection-driven approach. (Now, will I try to strike a deal for that next purchase of something that has really stuck in my mind for a few months and, though it would likely be a good deal for the watch, still really feels a bit too expensive for me...?)

I think you said it perfectly when you made this comment: "I only buy watches that appeal to me"... Many people buy things based upon hype, media, sensationalism and others ideas of what you should be getting. That one statement that you made, is the mindset..well said👍 Thanks for sharing Benjamin,..cheers

It sounds like the debate between those who buy stocks for speculation and those who do on value. I think resell value as a name is misleading because often people chasing it are speculators. Benjamin Graham was saying something like we should invest only if we would be comfortable owning a stock forever. It sounds like a good approach for watches too. What if you were unable to resell the watch? Would you still buy it?
@PeterKotsa

Interesting thoughts..nicely said Personally if I was buying a watch with the pre conceived idea "what if I needed to sell it?"..then I am no longer buying something because I want it for me. In other words I am not persuaded this is for me. We sometimes forget that this is a niche and we really only NEED one watch if any...👍

Talk is cheap. And people get too much into the parasocial aspects of being online, working out their thoughts publicly like the audience is their journal. But I’m of the opinion that none of that belongs in the public. If someone needs a soundboard, go find a friend and take walks with them. People grow and change over time, which logically makes older “talky” videos obsolete. Dumping one’s impulses on KZbin is foolish and potentially destructive.

I agree with your overall point. However, I don’t want to loose much money on a watch purchase. Not everyone has money to waste on wearing a watch temporarily. My only major purpose was a Datejust and it’s a keeper. The rest I buy depreciated to some degree.

I am definitely guilty of being influenced by KZbin watch channels. I don’t think I would have ever given grand seiko a second glance if not for that. Micro brands would be completely unknown to me. Why certain watches or brands are so special would be knowledge I simply don’t have. I don’t think it’s a bad thing that an experienced watch person provides and enthusiastic review of a timepiece etc. I love watching reviews of watches from various channels but blindly following someone else’s opinion is weak minded and downright ridiculous Did I buy the 12 because of the hype? Yes. A hunch purchase Did I buy a studio underdog watermelon? No, I think it’s bloody hideous. And if I wanted to buy a watch with great residuals that’s what I should do if it makes me happy. I think your reviews are usually attractive watches and very fair. And beautifully shot. I’m happy to be influenced but the decision making is still very much mine. And I’m fine with that. Ps the 12 and 6 numeral cut outs on the Portugueser. No no no

Too big for it's design. You're wearing a white frying pan. This is a 38mm watch, and it should have an outstanding watch band. Consider the price...I think this was a 'brand grab'...not a 'think about legacy' offering.

The things you mentioned are the exact things that drew me to this watch. The fact that it wears BIG for a 40.9mm..I Absolutely Love. It came with a really nice blue alligator strap, which looks a little too dressy for me, so I swapped it for the Artem. As for brand grab..if this said Seiko on that dial, with the same exact layout and details, I would have been extremely happy, because I probably could have got it for much less..but these days, that itslef is debateble as Seiko has skyrocketed.. Nonetheless, thanks for sharing 👍
