Jūrmala is actualy abt. 40km long chain of ex-fishermen vilages. Different names of the train stops are the names of those vilages. And sandy beach like that in Dubulti or Majori is all around the Latvian sea coast , total length of almost 500 km !

Wooden houses were popular as a summer holiday houses of rich people from Riga back in 19th and early 20th century. Also as summer houses of artists , poets , actors etc. Many are restored just lately. Those ones abandoned most likely belonged to poor locals who cannot afford to pay high property tax , which arose due to the fact that rich mansions changed the status of the town. Wana live in Jurmala ? Be prepared for a big hole in your pocket .😎

The sea level does fluctuate by a few meters more or less seasonally. Rather than the tides its affected by storms, winds, meltwater ect.

Some Latvians say, that the coldness of Riga bay is compensated by warmth and hospitality of Latvian hearts. We say of ourselves that we are reserved an cold blooded. Unfriendly even. But if one entrusts Latvian, then he has fried for life.

The north coast between Ventspils and Kolka is much wilder and quieter. Never ending sand beach next to a forest and not a person in sight.

its illegal to demolish these old houses because theyre designated as cultural heritage sites. and old wooden buildings are extremely expensive to renovate multiple hundreds of thousands euros). additionally since the russian invasion of ukraine and annexation of crimea theres been less investment by russian billionaires in jurmala (it was a very popular beach town for them because russia doesnt really have beaches themselves) Edit: other than that, i like your positive attitude - nice video, cheers

It's a Russian resort town kept artificially expensive and exclusive by the fact that 99% of Latvia's huge coast line cannot be developed at all due to environmental regulation. The only way to have a sea side home is to time travel back before 2010 or so and bribe some official to let you illegally build one and then have it grandfathered into semi-legal status. Way too many Russians in Jurmala still. Really not a place for Latvians at all.

Completely agree. I (Latvian) always choose Ventspils or Pāvilosta. Jūrmala is 75% Russian, it’s just unpleasant.

Yes, us Latvians chose other places to enjoy the sandy beaches. There are even beaches with sand that squeaks when you drag your feet. Lots of fun for little kids and adults who haven't experienced that before. And we also have beaches that have a lot of rocks (boulders from the ice age) instead of sand. And we do have tides when the water rises. And we have storms that are very destructive, washing away sand, and trees with all their roots. Our beaches keep changing. The beach in the bay is like a kiddy pool. The sea is very shallow, and you have to walk a bit to reach a decent depth for swimming. But don't let that water fool you. We do have quite a lot of people drown each year.
