People shit on Blackstar but they make some pretty good stuff. I have an ht212 with seventy-80's that actually sounds really sick when mic'ed up. It's an open back but it can be easily be modded into a closed back, something that I did, and when you do it sounds like a monster. The cabinet ends up having the same resonance of a 412 and it sounds huge. The seventy-80's are also pretty cool they have more lower mids and some treble spikes that add grind and make an amp sound more gained out. I actually played the ht212 along side a v30 212 and got a killer sound. I think if you put those two speakers in one cab you might have a crazy sound.

Cool video! I was impressed with the sound of the Blackstar oversized 4x12 guitar cab with the Celestion Vintage 30 speakers. It sounded good with all of your amps and you can pick out the differences in tone with each amp head. There's a lot of under the radar, unpopular brands of 4x12 cabs on the used gear market. I have played Line 6 Vetta slant 4x12 cab with Vintage 30 speakers at my friend's home studio and used to own & play the Peavey 412MS slant 4x12 cabs loaded with Celestion G12K-85 speakers. The stack of amp heads in your amp room is awesome!

I picked up one of these cabs a few years ago for cheap. A local music store had 2 Blackstar cabs left and they were blowing them out for cheap. Mine is the same exact cab you are demoing today. It is a very well built cab built very similarly to the Friedmans out there and even like an early Hiwatt 2x15 cab that I own. The wood is the same high grade Baltic Birch those makers use, 3/4” Baltic Birch. It sounds great with my Friedman Smallbox and I swapped a pair of the Vintage 30s out for a pair of Avatar/Fane M65s so now it’s a bit warmer, improved in character. I like it but it’s big, ungainly, heavy as all get out and its that old flat faced look that Im not too fond of.Some day Im going to replace the speaker cloths on both of my oversized 4x12s ( the other is a Mills Acoustics Afterburner which is actually slightly bigger as it’s the same height as the Blackstar but it’s 3 inches wider with Hiwatt style Salt and Pepper grillcloth so my rig looks more cohesive with matching grill cloths. If I get really ambitious I just might cut the Blackstar and the Afterburner in half so Ai would have more manageable 2X12 sizes. I don’t feel any need to get rid of them for anything else, I’m pretty happy with the overall sound of my rig. You have a great channel, im glad I discovered it a few months back, I’ve seen almost all of your episodes.Cheers!

I kinda liked the Mesa a bit more than the EVH, the top end fizz of the Mesa came through very nice. The orange sounded good until the chugs, maybe the bass needed dialed back or an eq in the loop to knock the 300-400 woof. Had the woof and flub not been there, woulda been at the top of my list.

I'm probably not up to date on my gear lingo because I haven't needed something this size for quite some time, but why is this designated as being an "oversized" cab? When I was playing little dive shows in the early 2000's I had a pawnshop Carvin 4 × 12 cab that seems like it was about the same size and it was always just the speaker component of my "half - stack" in my mind. It looked like it was a pretty average size among other "half - stack" rigs that I would see being used by other bands if I'm remembering correctly. A 2 × 12 cab is the only other size I've ever come across besides a full stack, ( which I've always heard was two 4 x12 cabs stacked on top of each other ) are 4 x12 cabinets available in various sizes?

To my ears it seemed like your EVH and Headfirst (especially after tweaking EQ) really like this cab. Mesa and Orange not so much- noisier in treble, as if they didn't like how the speakers loaded the amp. Overall, EVH and Headfirst were winners plugged into the BlackStar cab. I'm no expert but I know what I like. EVH was really good right out of the gate at your usual settings. Did you expect that?

For some strange reason, several lower-cost manufacturers like B-52 and I guess Blackstar went through a phase when they [sold] overbuilt quality cabinets, and sold them far under the price floor of companies like Orange and Mesa. Thank gawd. I have two Carvin 212s and 2 B-52 412s for the price of maybe one new or good used Mesa. The speakers themselves are nothing to laugh at, either.

Thought the cab sounded pretty darn good honestly. Are these definitely 16ohm vintage 30s in this cab? I agree, I can't stand 16ohm vintage 30s for metal honestly. 8ohm and 16ohm vintage 30s sound like two totally different speakers. 16 ohms are bright and almost fizzy sounding, 8ohms have a rolled off high end but with all the mids and tight low end you associate with a v30. A big part of the reason why I think Mesa 4x12s sound as good as they do, pretty sure they're 8ohm loaded, at least mine is.

I’d be willing to bet that it’s “heft” is just the addition material needed for the larger dimension cab. Even just a few inches in each dimension could easily add 10-15lbs to a can. Most Chinese V30's sound like crap compared to the UK made ones (especially the 16ohm versions), so I'm surprised these speakers sounds pretty good. I think the newer (like 2020 and forwards) Chinese V30's sound better now, but I'm guessing that these are older than that? However, I'm not an expert in the history and different production runs of the UK and Chinese V30's, so I could be completely wrong.
