I would've never expected this advice to come from a guitar channel. I've been struggling my whole life and I've lost a lot of opportunities because of this self-sabotaging mindset. Will work on it from now on. Thank you so much for opening our eyes.

It's great too still be playing at this stage of life. one of my goals would be if I'm playing guitar at home and somebody walks in the room I don't have to turn it down or be embarrassed about what I'm playing. And ultimately I like to play in a band with other musicians doing songs original songs and that creative process that I've had a little bit of but that would be another goal

Thank you so much for tackling this subject that i never see talked about nowhere. Our internal life, spirirual focus and psychological landscape dictates everything we do and it is easy to get lost on that specially if you blame everything on external things

My goal for now is to be able to play my favorite songs like the Tornado of Souls solo from Megadeth or the insane fast rhythm part of Battery from Metallica! ⚔️🛡

These are eye opening insights. This is one of my biggest issues. If subconsciously i don't believe in myself, no amount of practice will yield long term gains. So for me this is just something to be aware of in myself. I've had many of those experiences where I was playing really well I couldn't believe I was playing this good, playing licks and runs without mistakes and over and over again cleanly it's the most fantastic feeling. I buy the next day I started to doubt myself and then I couldn't replicate it but that's happened quite a few times and I'm taking that as a good thing. I am getting better and the periods of staying better are lasting longer. hope that makes sense! Kind of like people in recovery trying to find themselves, their true selves and it's two steps forwards and one step back. it always is you don't just go from mediocre to master overnight. I think this is what they need to teach in public schools starting at a very early age like how to deal with negativity how to deal with inner turmoil, how to deal with success how to deal with failure how to accept yourselves flaws and all. See and I never tied these two things together any type of vocation whether it's guitar playing etc it's The Man behind the man that's going to get us

I love how you look at the mindset / psychology Ben and yes I've been guilty of some of what you've raised in the last few episodes. To answer your question Mrs Higgy my main goal is to write and perform music that I can be proud of. I've been playing for over 30 years now. Although I'm pretty comfortable on the instrument technically it's my composition ability that needs work. It's great learning covers but a lot of them I'd never play live so they're more just an exercise in "can I play that?" The satisfaction gained from learning a technically challenging piece is great but I'm only repeating what other people have said but in my accent.

to answer Mrs Higgy, I have a huge list of songs I want to play, and it helps me knowing which technique I should aim for, and prevents me from working on stuff I actually don't need. I recommend it to everyone by the way it's very useful.

Thank you so much for addressing this topic, Lord Higgy. I needed to hear this because I definitely do exactly what you've described here. The advice that you gave on how to deal with it is much appreciated. To answer Mrs. Higgy's question - My goal is to just be able to get my technique to a level where I'd be able to play along to some of my favorite albums without stumbling during the solos.

Been playing for nearly 30 years, and you are right on so many points! I play in bands for about 20 years, write a big part of our music, can play some solos and leads, but would like to improve, to be able to play longer and faster phrases/licks. I'm now working on legato gym and badass guitar picking, then I'll move to hand sync, and hope to reach my goals! It already helped me a lot, as I'm more accurate in live situations.

Thanks for all the great KZbin videos, the badass instructional courses (worth every penny, seriously) and the Facebook workshops. They really have made a world of difference. After a year or so of moderately consistent practice, I'm approaching the technical standards I always wanted to achieve and have a clearer idea of where I want to take it. All the best 🙂👍🍻

Wow, I've just found you guys and I love you already. Rob here, I have spent years doing this negative trip to myself while I play and it's probably the number one reason for making my plateau's the journey instead of a rest stop before climbing upward to new levels. I know you need to sell lessons ( and I am really interested after I've had a chance to discuss this with you)) and we will discuss this in greater detail really soon, but I'd like to connect with you somewhere besides You Tube. I live in the Belated States of America, (US) so obviously, another site where we can talk and share would be best. To answer your question Ms. Higgy, Queen of Higgins House, I have to say it would be to turn my playing back into a spiritual event within myself (corny or what?), to learn/ unlearn the neck after getting my hands prepared for sharing the joy of music with others wherever I go. I don't need to be the greatest guitarist in the Shire, but to return to where I once was on the guitar would encompass all preparations to be able to accompany my one true Lord, Jesus Christ. Blessings to all ! ! Ben, so many thanks and kudos to you both for the chosen subject matter. This won me over. I listened intently to you cover a subject most advanced don't even think about discussing. Way to go ! ! 👍 👌 ✝ Robert, Sierra Highlands, California.

If a person sits down with their guitar, picks only one string and not that great. Yet when they get up they feel much lighter and happier.....well they just played the best concert to be had!!!!!

Thank you Ben! I needed this. I emailed you which you got right back to me about my struggle with controlling vibrato off a fast run. I can control it all day long to a metronome but when I play a quick lick or run, particular with a fast tempo, I feel rushed to squeeze in that vibrato for a half measure or so… I started playing when I was 11, never paid attention to vibrato so had that awful sheep thing for the majority of my playing time. About 5-6 years ago I really worked to get total control of it and have made tons of gains but again, just stupid nervous vibrato creeps in. I always knew it was mental but didn’t realize it was my subconscious from the years and years of doing it uncontrolled.

Ben , your lessons and video talks about the metal side of guitar and practice are 10x more valuable and important than any lesson or lick or book a person can buy , listen to , or watch anywhere . For me I play better when I fed better about myself and my playing and can actually enjoy guitar for the wonderful instrument it is .. thank you for talking openly about this and discussing it in depth because I think at the end of the day we all play guitar because it makes us happy and feel alive to some degree . Best teacher/instructor out there and a badass to the bone player ! Rock on brotha

Perfect video! Thanks! It gets down to the minute details of how and why which is SO helpful. I’m the complete opposite of this hahaha. I’m like “oh man I went up 10-20 bpm on this one exercise!” Then I’ll submit a video to Ben and he’s like there’s something wrong with it. You’re doing/not doing this. And then I’m like “we’ll back down to 50 bpm 😂😂😂. My end goal is to be able to play songs that I like and be able creat songs and solos and record them.
