Helps with deer. Straight pipes, I never even see deer. On my quiet bike, a deer about every 20 miles crosses my path. Living in the mountains my whole life an I never got close to hitting a deer. On my quite bike the other day I missed one by inches.

Thank you for this video. On July 29th, my oldest stepson, who has been riding off and on for about 2 years, was involved in a hit and run accident on his motorcycle, a Honda Rebel 300. He was northbound, and a westbound 2011 black Dodge Charger blew through a stop sign, hit him, then fled the scene. He suffered multiple broken bones in his right foot, his pelvis is fractured, and he has a tear in his carotid artery. But, he is alive and I am so thankful. He is scheduled for surgery on his foot next week, and after that will likely need surgery to repair his carotid artery. The driver of the Charger has not been apprehended. My stepson was wearing regular blue jeans, but did have on a full-face helmet, steel toe work boots, a padded motorcycle jacket, and motorcycle gloves. His bike was totaled, and there were pieces of the Charger’s front end all over the road. Luckily, a man working in his shop heard all the noise, ran out and found my son in the ditch, and called 911. Normally we ride as a family-me, my wife, my oldest son, and my oldest stepson. It just so happened that he was riding solo that particular day. Again, thank you very much for this video.

Distracted car drivers, inexperienced riders, too much speed, reckless riding, booze/dope -- all factors which contribute to bike accidents. Don't let down your guard when you get closer to home base. I've known of two bike/car accidents which happened close to the rider's home. I started riding on the street in 1968. I quit riding in 1990. I witnessed a buddy die. Stay sober and safe out there. Angels all around ya! 😇🙏 Thanks, Beth. -- W in Cleveland.

Great video beth. There are so many things that can go wrong when we ride and all we can do is try to minimise the chance of a crash. Speed is a common factor in motorcycle accidents in the uk, although speed does not kill, the impact does. The higher the speed the bigger the impact. There is a youtube video called david's story. I watch that from time to time, helps me remember how easy fatal accidents happen. Nice too, about the first aid, vitally important to know, at least the basics, of what to do. Not many of you guys put videos out about rider safety, which is a shame. Are you planning on more safety videos?

Very informative and appreciated PSA. I first started riding in the mid 60's in and around Independence and Kansas City Missouri long before cell phones. Every day was another test in survival. Then and now, even if you had revolving lights and a very loud horn, people just don't use good judgement and safe skills to look out for other cars and trucks let alone motorcycles. Thank you. By the way your hair is looking Great!

Thanks for sharing the video Beth…I was on my way to Ohio a couple of years ago…was on a two lane road slowing down to turn into a gas station…I had a semi behind me not paying attention…he was flying up behind me…ended up sliding my bike off the road to avoid getting rear ended…thank goodness I had my full face helmet on with my other gear…thankfully I only dislocated my thumb….bike was good to ride back home…could have been a lot worse….SO IMPORTANT to be a defensive rider.

Defensive driving is definitely the most important part of riding a motorcycle! I always assume that every car I see pulling up to the road is going to pull out in front of me or others cars that might merge into my lane on multiple lane roads or cars that are turning left might just turn in front of me! I have had some close calls but assuming the worst is going to happen has saved me quite a few times! I do not speed,to many police cars on the road nowadays and even unmarked police cars that you don’t expect until it’s to late! I sure don’t want a speeding ticket and have my insurance increase, plus paying a fine! Great video! Ride safe and I wish you and yours good health and happiness! 😎👍😁

Beth. I've been riding for 55 years. I've had a few accidents too. My old man told me when I was 13 yrs old and rode my first bike that always ride like everyone is out to get you because they are. Always know who and what is around you at all times. keep your head on a swivel. If someone is about to make a left hand turn in front of you make eye contact with them. be sure they see you.

Some people need to hear this. Well done for making this video and sharing it and put it to notice. As a European rider, we got trained and prepared quite well to be able to obtain the license. It's even in the law. I know America is less strict with this. Riding is not only using common sense and control. But also you can't control everything even if you are vigilant and ride defensively. I does increase you overall safety and well being of course. If you are visible you do increase the odds of people seeing you earlier. A bike has a horn, when in doubt use it. Rev bombing can help cause it's sound as well but a horn works as well. But don't go angry cause havock to other people or the car or whatever they in. Big chance that will turn against you, so also unnecessary. I know it's a reaction but still. Also gear does help with being able to survive an accident or even have less of a recovery due through the wounds etc. But phones, alcohol, drugs so yes also weed, speed, inexperienced riding whether in a car or on the bike is a big no. Hence I am not a big fan, of all the big tablets and camera's with sensor in the car which distract people as well.

I had a cousin who suffered a traumatic brain injury while crashing a motorcycle without wearing a helmet. He spent the next 20+ years in and out of nursing homes. His short-term memory was gone, could barely walk or speak. Often needed help feeding himself. His last few years, he spent entirely in a wheelchair. He just recently passed away due to that injury. So whenever i hear about guys saying "You gotta die of something" when asked why they dont wear helmets - I try to explain that when it comes to crashing your bike, some fates are worse than death.

It's so strange to me as a rider from the UK. I don't know a single person who drinks and drives/rides, who doesn't wear a helmet (it's the law), who doesn't at a minimum wear a motorcycle jacket. Firstly, well done for a great vid Beth. After 45 years of riding im sure that every other road user is trying to kill me. Defensive riding is my way of staying alive. Also I rarely ride in a pack. The show boaters in group riding are possibly my worst nightmare. Just an observation, but I feel I am noticed more on my harley than on my klr.

it is very VERY VERY important to stay hydrated when riding. We were on a poker run down here in southern alabama two summers ago, it was one of those 99 degrees in the shade type of summer days. this young Kat riding with us had been doing shots at every bar stop, about 3/4 through the run he was at the light and just fell over dead, basically cooked from the inside. it might feel like the wind is cooling you, but the wind and the sunshine will act as an air fryer.....drink that H2O!!!

Be visible! Have a reflective vest on your bike for night time riding, be alert at dusk and dawn, especially if you have the sun in your back. Yes, black is a cool color on you gear, but it makes you more or less invisible. And there's continuation courses out there, both for intermediate and advanced riders, take one.

I disagree with the idea that motorcycles are "more dangerous" than other vehicles, but it's only a matter of semantics. Riding a motorcycle is as safe as operating any other vehicle unless you crash. What is true is that you're more vulnerable, more vulnerable to injury and the elements which makes it extra important to utilize the necessary skills and use proper protective gear. Maybe most people will think that these are the same thing, but I just like to make this distinction.

No helmet laws in my state, but I always wear one. Next to helmets, I would say gloves are very important as well. I heard that in 80 - 90% of all motorcycle accidents, your hands will be the first part of your body to make contact with the ground.

I was in a crash in Michigan back in 2018 when someone pulled in front of me. While I was able to slow down some, I still flew over their hood. As I was laying on the ground, I had to STRESS to some bystanders that I did NOT want them to remove my helmet or touch me. I was pretty badly concussed so I don't remember the next day and I definitely rattled my brain, but if I wasn't wearing a helmet I don't know that I'd still be riding today.

I’ve had 7 major surgeries, 21 day procedures, and have been blessed that Drs have been able to put me back together and I ride every single day I can. The difference is I haven’t had a serious wreck in 20 year now, that’s because I’m now the biggest ass on the road. I assume everyone is going to pull out or going to turn into me, and by taking the same advice she just gave and now ride extremely offensively AND defensively.

Its funny the difference of out look from the USA and the UK we ride always with a lid its the law but I wouldn't ride without one. protective gear yes always. But I wasnt always like that way back in the 80's I had a Kawasaki 750 turbo and used to ride in shorts and trainers , lid yes ( law ) but a paramedic showed me some photos of a girls leg after a slide on gravel, it was like a meat stick over a drip tray . It did not even look like a leg. after that day full leathers and gloves Boots. I have had some big accidents in the 80's which I only walked away from after 6 months in traction and plaster cast then 3 more months learning to walk again. I now ride as if every other car / lorry / Bus / tractor is out to kill me this way I react before I need to OK sometime I didnt have to but Ive been riding for 40 years and are still riding not some slow pottering bike either a ZX12R . loud pipes do save lives as car's dont see you but they do hear you. be safe , keep riding

In the 60's and 70's the term "Squid" referred to collegiate type kids. There was also was "Racks" and "Greasers". "Rack" was short for racketeer. Who are the "Squids" now a days???

You should tell everyone like my Dad always told us, never fear the motorcycle, always respect it !😮 it weighs more than you and the very second y you think you have the motorcycle mastered then the motorcycle will rise up and SHOW who the mas master really is😢

Ride as if you have no rights at all . I have been riding for 67 yrs and have always given up my right a way to a car, truck even other bikers keeps me safe. Not counting road hazard like recap truck tires, now am 82 and still riding my 2006 Kawasaki nomad 1600. Keep your two wheels down.

Oh yeah, I still speed, but only when there’s no one around and not if I’m not 100% on. Then, if I feel 199% on, I drop 10-20mph off what feels good as this part is what cost me all those surgeries. It’s my opinion that 70-80% of all motorcycle wrecks are the fault of the rider.m, cars may see us, but can’t judge where we’re going to be when doing 120 mph.

Beth, there is motorcycle airbags out there that you wear. And assume that everyone on the road is a moron and it's your job to keep them all safe.
