I have had the enormous pleasure of seeing "You Never Can Tell" in professional production several times (two of them at the Shaw Festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario). It is, without question, my favorite play. I don't say the GREATEST play; it isn't even Shaw's greatest play ("Heartbreak House" and "Saint Joan" are tied for that honor). But "You Never Can Tell" is as exquisitely constructed as a Faberge egg; it blends the serious, the comedic, and the satirical in a perfect mixture. All of the characters are dream roles for actors and actresses (I saw Uta Hagen play Mrs. Clandon, Philip Bosco as William, and Stephen McHattie as Bohun; GOD, what a blessing!). And -- not that this is the play's greatest glory -- a play written in 1897 on the subject of divorce, child custody, and the redemptive power of forgiveness could have been written yesterday, for its timeliness. A crown jewel of world drama.

A witty comedy by a master. With a first class cast. A triumph.

To employ an abrv phrase hitherto unused by me, OMG. I ❤️GBS.... Major Barbara, Pygmalion, even My Fair Lady, tho I prefer Pyg. And this beauty, YNCT. I have a newfound admiration for 1897 since it produced such a comedy, one that still plays a century onward (if indeed this dramatization is authentic to the original). Reminds me somewhat of screwball comedies such as had their heydey in the 1930s. If this play were ever performed on stage today I’d love to see it. In a post-covid world, I guess.

Ah!...the late , great Freddie Jones .One of a generation of theatre trained actors who thanks to TV , we grew up with from the 1970s . Sadly , he and many others ( too many to name ) have passed away in the last few years. Geoffrey Palmer being the most recent . And looking around the present crop its apparent that they are irreplaceable ..

Absolutely. Today's actors don't have voices. There is no music, expression or cadence to their delivery. Crazy, as their voice, their body is their instrument. I go back to the actors I knew as a child/teen. They truly are irreplaceable.

Endless, irritating dialogue made it difficult to go past first five minutes.

"Irritating" to you only, apparently. Endless? Have you ever listened to a full stage play? Yeah, this one doesn't end until page 125. 🤣
