In addition to the plastic "ammo cans" not being able to hold much weight, they also do not seal well at all despite having a gasket. The plastic flexes so much as to render the gasket worthless. I have about a half dozen of the Cabelas plastic "ammo cans" only because they used to give them to you free when you bought bulk ammo. They are fine for making into first aid kits, tackle boxes, etc. But for ammo you need to invest(and yes it's an investment when you consider the price of freedom seeds) in either milsurp cans or new chinesium cans from places like walmart and harbor freight. And don't forget to buy a bottle of dessicant and some organza bags to make your own moisture-absorbing devices for the cans.

@@VAPrepper757 that's why there's something called exercising and working out, the thing is this I don't care how many rounds one person can hold, what magazines they could carry, no one's guaranteed to win the fight just because they can hold more rounds/Mags, they can get deleted what's 19 rounds left and eight magazines in their bug out bag. while a guy with a 12-gauge with buckshot won the fight because with each trigger pull anywhere from 8 to 15 pellets come out depending on your shell, it's easier to shoot under pressure and harder to miss unlike an AR-15, there's nothing wrong with the AR-15 everybody got to have a battle rifle but what I'm saying is how many rounds one can carry can matter.... or it may not matter. A train guy like myself with a 12-gauge shotgun against a guy with a AR-15 with little to no training ....... I'm going to come out on top, yes anything can happen no one's guaranteed to win the fight but my chances is better because of the round I choose plus training, plus it's easier to hit my target Plus it's only going to take one pull to trigger and not 3 to 5 or more, I go with the better defense options, An ar 15 is a good support weapon ....not so much in the defense department, an AK is better for that, but to each his own whatever you train with.

People forget in most SHTF scenarios people won’t survive gunshot wounds regardless caliber size. My 22lr’s are very accurate, basically silent and don’t give off much of a flash signature. I train with cheap brass ball ammo and reload it using more capable rounds to stock. Reloading ball ammo is kinda pointless, but reloading with better bullets saves a lot of money.. I train and prep for altercations. But in SHTF I will avoid altercations as much as possible. I don’t care if you are Seal team 6 or Delta. Every firefight you get in your chance or survival decreases. It’s not the movies where you have plot armor or video games. This proves that certain people should not be giving advice. NEVER EVER use steel-cased ammo in an AR-15!!!! The Wolf steel-cased ammo is covered in lacquer to keep it from rusting. . When you fire it, it leaves lacquer behind in chamber. Soon it will harden and glue the unfired round or the expended round into you chamber and it will not eject. I learned this the hard way a long time ago. Wolf steel cased ammo is no good in an aR-15. If it is in an AK rifle this never seems to happen People, beware of false experts they will lead you on to the path of destruction..

Wrong. It’s not the lacquer that causes the issue. It’s the steel case not sealing against sooty blowback into the chamber like brass does. The .223 case is more straight walled as opposed to the 7.62x39 and more prone to sticking from the dirty carbon buildup.

I agree on the general choice of main calibers to store. .22, 9mm, .223, 308 and 12gauge. That is my mainstay to , together with .38 special. But i strongly believe that in a real shft you will not train and waste ammo of any kind. Every round you have will be to valuable to waste. You need to train before an shft. And in an shft you also will have not much, if any time to train, as there will be a bunch of work related things you have to do just to keep you and your family alive. If you need to train younger ones, a pellet or bb gun might be a tool for that. The normal civilian will probably not engage in extensive firefight with high ammo counts. That does not mean that you should not have an good stock of ammo. It does not matter what, as long as it reliably goes bang when you pull the trigger and has decent accuracy. For general use i would be fine with fmj But you need to have some good hunting ammo for big game. And it does not hurt to have at least a couple hundred rounds for any gun you own that is in a caliber that is not mentioned here.
@ThatMDubyaGuy6 ай бұрын
For a SHTF situation I would agree on two types of ammunition but would classify and choose differently. First, your quality defense ammunition. This is what you use now, and later as your first choice and option. So have a couple hundred rounds of the good stuff on hand to rotate through your carry gun(s) either yearly or every two. If something happens, you have at least a fair amount to work with. Second and this is where I disagree with the “junk ammo” concept. This is your second line ammo that you may well end up having to use during a protracted situation and having to depend upon something of lesser quality or reliability is not a good idea. Personally I have a load for each cartridge that I developed that can be used for target shooting, hunting if need be, and defense if I would happen to run out of the defense ammunition. That way I don’t have to worry about my sights, switching from targets to that rabbit or deer. Unlike “junk ammunition”, it is reliable and accurate. Emphasis on the reliable. Having recently gone through a 1000 round course again, with 20 other students, it was interesting to see the difference between the two main calibers over that 21,000 rounds. All of us were shooting lead free practice ammo, mostly 9mm but a few of us were using the .40 caliber. Same brand, same style, but the 9mm had a lot more duds and feed issues. This is not an ammunition that I would put back, simply because I might have to depend upon it one day. And its reliability is not there. To simplify all of this, a couple hundred rounds of good defense ammunition is adequate to start. Such as Federal HST or Hornady American Gunner XTP. The second line or standard ammunition, which has to be just as reliable and hopefully shoots to the same point of impact, but is cheaper, such as the Federal American Eagle options, of if you can score a deal the older JHP options like the Federal Hi-Shok. A lot of the time you can get the 50 round box of the older tech jhp for the same as a 20 round box of the modern premium options. They are unlikely to be barrier blind like the current choices, but still can be just as effective as they were 20-30 years ago, like the Federal 9BP load. It was known for its accuracy and reliability and decent effectiveness. It’s in the lower class category today and yet is still a decent economy option. This is what I would recommend and do put back myself, the standard choice. Practice junk, is just that. Not something that you really want to stockpile seriously because you may have to use it. Ask yourself a serious question, how much practice do you think you will get in an emergency or post-SHTF? Especially when you are your own resupply. Assuming that you aren’t going to find ammunition drops in the middle of the street, you have exactly what you started with, no more. Is this situation going to last 6 months or 20 years? How long has Venezuela been in the gutter now? Zimbabwe? Chicago? Detroit? Simply put, after it hits the fan, you will not be training, not be practicing, just holding onto as much as you can, because you may not get any more. It’s not like the military where a helicopter is going to drop off a resupply when you call for it. These may be extreme examples but look at what California has done with their lead free ammunition, and places where you don’t have a local shop or dealer anymore. Personally having gone through the lean years of the late 70’s and the 80’s in the rural Midwest, I know how much ammo it took to keep the family freezer stocked, and what it would take to do the same thing here and now. I have enough of my primary choices to keep the freezer full for a decade at a minimum, several decades for others. And this same ammo can be used for defense if needed. Great stuff as usual, it was a great thought experiment.

I would agree, however, one of the best things you can do is have a couple types. Some cheap range ball ammo for training where precision isn't necessary. Like 100 and in. Distances where the potential zero difference for the quality ammo isn't big enough to not be able to train and improve. The have your quality stuff that shoots more precise and practice your longer range skills with that.

My only suggestion regarding the .22LR conversion would be to set it up identically to your primary. Which would mean a dedicated lower with an upper with a .22LR barrel and bolt assembly, like from CMMG. Same stock, pistol grip, sling set-up, sights and/or optics and at least five magazines. May cost more than say a Ruger 10/22, but it's a much better trainer as far as muscle memory goes.
@dashingrapscallion88126 ай бұрын
50 Beowulf is a .50 cal round that can be put in a standard AR mag. 6.5 Grendel is a 6.5mm round that fits a standard AR mag. Both can be shot out of a standard AR lower if you swap to an upper chambered for that caliber. 6.5 creedmoor is a longer casing (it would fit one of your AR-10 mags).
@PoplarPrepper6 ай бұрын
I seriously looked at Grendel for longer range and big game hunting that way I could still use my lower... But in the end it was just going to be cheaper on the ammo side to do .308.
@dashingrapscallion88126 ай бұрын
@@PoplarPreppercheck out Banana Ballistics. He does side by side penetration tests on things like lumber, sand, concrete and mild steel. IIRC Grendel didn’t pen significantly better than 5.56 - certainly not enough to justify $1 extra per round. I think he was using green tip but it might have been M193. I think you make the right call sticking with .308/7.62 NATO- it’s going to out pen and out out range 6.5 Grendel and is significantly cheaper in bulk. Plus - like you said, it being more popular means it will be easier to come by even in harder times compared to more niche calibers. If you do pick up a separate upper for different calibers, consider marking/color coding your mags. It’ll make it less likely that you chamber the wrong round in the upper. The last thing you want is a catastrophic failure due to chambering a .300 blackout in a 5.56 upper (as an example - I don’t know if a 6.5 Grendel will fully chamber in a 5.56, or a .308 in a 6.5 Creedmoor chamber in the same way. If it doesn’t go into battery - awesome, your face doesn’t have a catastrophic renovation. On the downside you may have just created a stoppage that you may not have time to correct).

The problem with steelcase is that it is very dirty. Does it fire? Yup. Honestly, any rounds you get downrange are good in a firefight. I can guarantee that you arent looking at MOA at that point. Combat effectiveness is what you need. 55-77 FMJ will certainly do the job...even with body armor. Get hit by one...you might not be dead but your out of action for a while. I would twist this. I practice shooting with a PCP long and hand size tool in a basement practice place. A scuba tank + pellets is all you need. 500 rounds of pellets are $8 and can match the profile of your broomstick and hand-size boom stick with PCP-driven tools. But practice is mostly PCP air. There is more to say on this, but suggest adding pcp so you can practice without going to a range if you have a basement, or friendly back yard.

A bad guy won't be able to tell which hit him.I added one small category and that I what I will call " First Day Out" one load bearing gear set worth of a high quality " above average" ammo like in .308 The German MEN head stamp ammo.. known for superior properties... In 556 you choose, but I noticed that ADI Australian 5.56 was a bit hotter than anything else. Or Hornady TAP etc... The first day of shooting could possibly be the only day, or conversely you might see more targets that day among your adversary, so they may not be wise about cover/concealment which they will learn soon enough but probability of hits could be very good that day, Then regular green tip for action on subsequent days...Just a thought.

I think you're addressing a problem that doesn't exist. I have lots of hardball. I'm also a 9mm guy. And most 9mm hollowpoint doesn't expand well. It shoots like hardball most of the time. I shoot Remington 22 range buckets and have little to no duds. So, I'll take cheap. If I can consistently hit a plate with it at 200 yards without a rest, it's plenty good enough. The better question is: how long will your food last? How far can you run fully kitted?

Learn from Ukraine. Small drones that drop grenades, or are used as explosive missiles and recon, are the new, hot weapons. The most readily available counter measures are 12 gauge shotguns, with buck shot or other appropriate shot. Having super reliable and rapid shooting shotguns, and tons of ammo are super necessary. Also, take up skeet. Having netting like fish nets, to make barriers against drones from attacking your shelter is important.

From personally having a large safe dedicated to specifically for just ammunition with both cheap target ammo and good battle ammo. I can say I believe there should also be the attention to another concern not being spoken with ammo prep. The ability to reload is something that shouldn't be over looked or disregarded as brass, primers, powder and projectiles should be included in your ammo prep. Not only do I have enough factory ammo, but I also have enough components to reload and replenish that stock at any given time, just incase it's not ever available.

It would a good idea to also have .22 and .177 in pellets with a mold, I prefer.40 over 9mm but not much difference in your overall advice. I am also into black powder but that’s more of a hobby than SHTF prep, but hey it’s another option and lower tech that could become popular after the modern ammo runs out. You also have crossbows, archery, sling shots and even a stone sling. Defensive traps , and other tactics are also worth consideration. One shot one kill, as opposed to spray and pray is a good mindset I got from a retired green beret who trained many of us in squad maneuvers via airsoft many years ago.
