Huh. The tuba in that register doesn't seem to have the same dark, low tone of the singer. It seems like it would need to play an octave lower to get the same effect. Later on he plays lower notes with the characteristic sound. (I also think the trombone plays a pedal tone that gets it, too.) Maybe it could be done in the octave played, but it would need to abandon the light, singing tone that in any other circumstance would be awe-inspiring.
