CORRECTION: at 6:16, there should be one flat (Bb) in both key signatures ,as the scale is D Aeolian, not D Dorian. thank you to the viewer who pointed this out for me also, if you enjoy the content and are feeling generous, consider supporting the channel through a one-time contribution (no subscription or anything) on my Buy Me a Coffee page: buymeacoffee.com/scomusic thanks so much!

In my personal opinion, the score of the third Harry Potter is the best score, John Williams has ever composed for a single film. He had the groundwork already laid with the first two films. But when Cuaron took over and made the third part, i think, he had a different, not so consumer-friendly approach to make a film. He made the most artistic and risky Harry Potter feature in my Opinion So this influenced Williams to get all in, too. A Window to the Past is also my favorite Theme ...

I'm 28 years old and tearing up a bit to this theme. Life has changed so much since the Harry Potter days of my childhood. From growing up in rural Michigan to finding my way living and traveling through Europe, it can be hard to find an anchor to my childhood, origins, just my past life in general. I have my family, but I'm not quite close to them. I only talk to one person from high school. All my family has left my hometown, save an uncle and aunt, and I have no idea when I'll be back to visit. But there's something about Harry Potter, and especially the music, that can bring me back to my childhood. It helps me remember my roots and where I come from, and the MAGIC that I lived in as a child. I have a strong feeling this fall/winter I'll be listening to the HP soundtracks quite a bit. Thank you for the video, I'm very happy it showed up on my recommendations.

This theme is used in the "Dark Arts at Hogwarts Castle" show in the Universal Studios Parks, right when everything seems lost and Dumbledore blasts his phrase “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” and then Harry's deer patronus appears floating in the sky thanks to drones. That was back in 2019 were drones in shows were new and rare. That, combined with this haunting melody and the powerful bass line was sure to wow the audience and let and audible gasp. I'm a huge John Williams fan, and a huge soundtrack fan in general (and the non-Williams HP themes are nothing to sneeze at and have some of my favorite motifs - I'm a big fan of several of the Hooper themes especially) and Prisoner of Azkaban is one of my absolute favorite of the scores. It's probably my favorite HP score, one of my very favorite Williams non-Star Wars scores (Hook is probably my other favorite), and just one of my favorite soundtracks in general. I feel like it doesn't get talked about a lot, especially in various Williams discussions. There's something about this soundtrack where Williams really gets to lean into the more melancholic, introspective, emotional themes (where strings and woodwind get to shine) instead of the more brassy/action heavy fanfares and bombastic themes. I freaking love Buckbeak's Flight, A Window to the Past and the Mischief Managed/map motifs. The Patronus Light, Forward to Time Past and Secrets of the Castle are fantastic too. I've found - and this isn't a complaint - that a lot of Williams' scores seem to echo each other or feel very familiar. But the Azkaban soundtrack is one of his that really feels very unique in its vibe. Although in some ways, it reminds me of some of my favorite atmospheric Star Wars prequel/sequel tracks. Of all the ones I've listed, Buckbeak's Flight is probably the most 'traditionally' Williams in that it's a soaring fanfare, but even that has a little hint of melancholy to it.

YES! Finally someone talks about this theme! This is absolutely my favourite piece out of all the music for Harry Potter. I sometimes have genuinely a hard time listening to it, just because of how emotional it makes me. “A Window to the Past” is such a good descriptor for it, because that’s how listening to it feels. There’s this joy, because the past you are looking at is beautiful and you want to keep looking. But then there’s that heart-shredding misery, because while you can look at it, you can never go there. It’s so beautiful, and that beginning part makes me physically ill. Sometimes I’ll re-listen to it over and over in a near masochistic way. It’s just so good.

The reason Williams notated in 6/8 and then 9/8 is because that is how the melody is felt and read. As you see in the 6/8 section there are 2 groupings of 2 notes, the next bar (9/8) begins with the same rhythmic grouping but then because Williams wanted to have an extended held note he ends each melodic section on a dotted half note (a creative decision, its effects on the feel of the rhythm are interesting for sure). But the result is 2 bars: one call and one response. In order to notate that in a way where the performers and conductor can see this intention, this is essentially the only way to notate it. After this amount of notes the melodic content starts again (but varied), and within those amount of notes, the bar line divisions fall where the call is separated from the response.
@callumkuhl1370

yeah you're right, its much cleaner the way he notates it cause it makes the phrase 2 bars rather than an awkward 5 bar phrase if it was in 3/8. just thought it was funny because it's not something you see everyday.

I adore the scores to movies 4-8, but 1-3 are my favorites, and they're somehow so ingrained in my memory and *memories* that they've managed to create musical context to my own past. I don't know if that will make sense, but the best I can equate it to is how, in childhood, you might have realized your friend's belongings had a distinct scent to them, maybe you could detect the same scent whenever you walked into their home. So it seemed to accompany a bunch of different happy memories. You might still remember that scent, and perhaps not, but you'd remember it if you smelled it again, and all those beautiful memories would come flooding back. Those memories might not be clear; maybe it's just emotions or vague remnants of images, half-forgotten excitements and victories. That's what John Williams's HP scores are to me, especially Hedwig's Theme.

It was the version with the baroque flute that had me stand back in amazement by how beautiful it was. Subsequent listens allowed me to slowly start noticing how thoughtful and pretty consistent the musical quality was. I did not know at first that John Williams only wrote entirely new music for practically the whole of the whole film for just the first and third movie. From The Chamber of Secrets, I mostly seem to only recall the recurring music that was written and used for the first film, for some reason. Prisoner of Azkaban will be special to me as the last go of his evolution with the material and it was a lovely way to conclude the trilogy, so to speak. There’s a kind of continuity and consistency that occurs between both movie scores he was solely responsible for. I was really pleasantly surprised by how he was able to demonstrate variation but in a marked, appropriate, mature and fitting way for the third film, and I really can’t imagine the movie being as good without it.

Williams wrote the music for the second film too. Though it was a bit of a rush job as he had four movies to score that year.

@@pieterboelen2862 I think I made the leap or assumption that because of those other commitments, he wasn’t brought in to score really much of anything for Chamber of Secrets. I guess I just assumed that because much of the music I remember from the second film was in some cases exactly lifted from Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone, that John Williams was only credited in the second movie for the material from the first film that was arranged by William Ross.

i always admired john williams for understanding that this film looks and feels different in style than the two before and really capturing and bringing the unique visuals to life with unique music. not just this theme but the whole score of the third movie. and i think this combination is what made this movie a fan favorite. i'm so glad you honored this particular theme in your video. this theme (and the brilliant use of specific instruments picked to play it) touches my heart in a very personal way. i later in life realized that my favorite songs, no matter the genre, are in aolian mode, and i guess it all started from here, when i heard this music when i was 10. the use of this mode is brilliant because it has a melancholic feel to it which i think gets the bittersweetness of nostalgia, especially with a story like harry's where the past is sad but he tries to hold on to it fondly. i always feel like i have an unspoken understanding with anyone who likes this theme.

It's worth mentioning that Williams changes the modes in different scenes. Even the example of his original sketch seems a bit ironic after you said that he avoids the harmonic minor since the example provided clearly is in G harmonic minor! Also, calling it forgotten is a bit of a stretch, especially with this one, since it might considered a fan-favorite and very important to the story. I think more people forgot about Fawkes's theme, which is a beautiful little piece of music on its own, but not playing such an important role in the film. Come to think of it, many themes in The Chamber of Secrets are not so prominent and well audible in the movie, and if you don't listen to the album after watching it, some might easily go over your head. Actually, it is quite interesting how the first two movies and films kinda blend together, then you have a sharp turn with Cuaron and Williams' inspiration with the English Baroque and folk music (A Window to the Past has a very folky feeling to me, similar to one of the themes Williams crafted for the Witches of Eastwick, and later, for the War Horse), disregarding most of his own previous themes, and then they kept changing the composers which resulted in next to no musical connection. A window to the past would have worked great in the two last movies (Godric's hollow scene or his last conversation with his parents seem like a perfect fit).

I think A Window to the Past is my favourite piece of music bar-none. It was the first orchestral/soundtrack piece I ever had on my mp3 player as a kid because it was the first that truly resonated with me as much as or more than regular songs did. I can cry my eyes out from the first couple bars if I let myself and it’s truly just beautiful to me- so nostalgic and tied up in emotions from such formative years. But I always knew there was a perfect storm of musical factors in there that causes it as well. I studied a decent amount of musical theory at university so could follow this easily and it all makes such sense- so many of the choices I find most pleasing to the ear were made all in one composition. Great video 🥰

I always loved the PoA the most of all the franchise movies, mainly for the feelings the music here can envoke. Especially the combination of the soundracks "The Patronus Light" and "Window to the past", which are heard when Harry cast the patronus, are just perfect. The melodic choir of The Patronus Light gives the feeling of warmth and safety that the patronus gives. Then "Window to the past" fills it with Harry needing to recall to his past for a happy memories, while overcoming all the horrors, that he had to go through. The music here just makes you feel like no other Harry Potter movie. I love John Williams and always will. (for note, I am by far no music expert, this is just how I feel about the soundtrack.)

With Prisoner of Azkaban being the first HP film to really lean into the darkness vibe and feel of the wizarding world, it contrasts that great in the film with the expository scenes thrown in, mostly taking place during the day, even if the subject matter is a bit 'Sirius' (eh? lol) the setting always gives a veil of lightness to the situation. I think that because Voldemort doesn't make a blatant appearance in the movie on screen, the Visually darkened shots thrown in and almost all at the end of the movie, along with what I previously stated, have much more of an impact as a stand alone movie in the franchise. To me it's the series taking a deep breath before it heads into the *actual* chaos and darkness of what Harry and company are going to have to face later on.

The A motifs feel like they’re asking a question, and the B motifs feel like they’re replying, but not in a way that’s conclusive - it isn’t a simple answer, it doesn’t satisfy the question. It’s sad, it’s not certain about what it’s saying, it’s an answer that raises more questions, but it’s at peace with that uncertainty. It’s okay with continuing to wonder and reflect.

HP & the Prisoner of Azkaban film & score definitely left a mark on me as I was 14 when it came out and started to develop a true passion for the works of John Williams, Danny Elfman, Thomas Newman, Alan Silvestri, ... After the 1st time, I remember how transported I was by all the new themes, especially A window to the past and Buckbeak's flight, I was playing theme in my head over and over again and kept thinking "I need to hear this again, it's fantastic".
