Exactly, shooting a compound or traditional bow is way different from shooting a recurve. There are also so many styles of traditional. What may be considered "correct" in hunting might be "wrong" or "unorthodox" in target archery. Thank you for being one of the people to point this out.

Good enough introduction for Men's Journal. I started learning archery and discovered it was a lot more involved. I was taught to draw up to my jaw to stay consistent. I am struggling with proper release, not just relaxing my fingers, but also pulling with my scapula further back. I was recently given a nice bow with a stabilizer (yes, it makes a difference). I am learning to handle a bow with a lanyard securing it to my aiming hand to keep me from squeezing the bow and throwing arrow off the course upon release.
@HerMoisture

I did an archery unit in my P.E. class and they taught us how to use a bow but they got a few things wrong and used high tension string bows which ended up making me way less accurate and only able to hit the target twice out of the 8 times I actually shot the bow. The high tension string made it much more difficult to properly pull back without hurting my fingers and I wouldn't have enough power for the arrow to end go near the target (And they told us to use two fingers, not three). The bows were also designed to have the arrow rest on the bow, but that made it go at an angle, so they put a thing on there that was meant to sort of spring up and change the arrow's trajectory to make it go at a more straight angle, but that just made it go at even MORE of a sidewalks angle, and apart from the fact that only one person in the entire 30 people class actually had decent experience using a bow, they also placed the targets about 12 feet away from us, which doesn't sound like much, but of course Texas likes to be windy on dry days, making the arrow move around a lot while airborne. We even did an activity on the last day of the unit which was trying to pop balloons that were on the target which had candy in them. Out of the 4 shots that everyone got, few of them even hit the target, and only one of them managed to pop a balloon. This video really helped me to find out what I was doing wrong (And what they were teaching incorrectly) and I definitely feel more confident when it comes to firing a bow. Thanks for the vid, guys!

That pulling technique is fine for me when it comes to lower poundages (Up to 60#). When I draw my heavier bows though, I personally tend to engage more of my back muscle by stepping forwards, placing my left food in the direction of the target, the other one sideways to the target, putting the bow down infront of my knee, relatively slowly engage in a "sitting position" and start pulling upwards (like I would, when I start a chain saw, for example(Whilst standing up again), until my elbow reaches the side of my head. After that I lower my elbow into a straight line with my left arm (Holding the bow in the left hand, keeping the left shoulder down). While pulling upwards though, I personally tend to keep my left arm at a small angle so I push and pull the bow, basically. That way it's easier for me to pull currently up to 120#.
@yugen
@yugen 3 жыл бұрын
Can you do the Korean archery test with your bow? Pull to full draw, hold for 3 seconds 10 times in a row without any shaking? If not, you probably need a less powerful bow unless you don't care about accuracy and just enjoy launching arrows into the sky (which is fine, that's fun too).
@Fuerwahrhalunke
@Fuerwahrhalunke 3 жыл бұрын
@@yugen Oh, at the moment it definitely is enough. Currently I am "just launching arrows". I can hold it 4 times each 3 seconds to full draw, after that it becomes progressively more shakey (Just tried it). Though, for me, with me doing instinctive aiming, there is no need for holding that long. I can train with 120# all day long without anything hurting me or it getting uncomfortable and still hit the target. Holding the pull for that long is either because you are pro-actively aiming, because you want to gain more strength or because you are waiting for better weather :P

@@higherdimensionalsoul42 you want to bend the bow arm elbow out and the bow hand tilted slightly as if your holding a can of pop. there's a sweet spot between there that makes your shots still solid without puttting too much stress on your wrist and flaying your arm, but just experiment with it on your own as different forms work for different people.

Top olympic coaches teach that an anchor point is not enough for accuracy and consistency. You want to acquire "back tension", particularly the activation of the drawing arm rhomboid/lower trapezius so that your scapula fully retracts into bone on bone contact right before release. That, combined with at least one very reliable and repeatable anchor point are how you know you've pulled far enough. Many archers use a tooth or jawbone for consistency. Some use 3 anchor points.

I have a question regarding the figers. I remember someone telling me the origin of the "middle finger" sign (the f*ck you sign) goes back to the middle ages and archers. When archers were captured, the enemy would cut off their middle finger, so when they would be released, they would not be able to shoot bows again. But, there were captured archers, whose fingers were not cut off, so when they were released, they showed their middle fingers to the enemy saying that they still have their fingers and they can go to battle again and this gesture was considered as an offensive behavior. Is this true?

I purchased a new bow and practice arrows. I can hit my target but they bounce off and off the go for me to walk down. I’m in the country. Is it because of the blunt tips?
@hannahjohnson7983
@hannahjohnson7983 3 жыл бұрын
What poundage is your bow? A lower poundage bow might not have enough force to make the arrows stick to the target, depending on how far you are shooting. It could also be blunt tips or the material of the target.

My recurve bow does not have a groove to rest the arrow, what should I do to aim? I always miss my target by a couple inches because i dont really know how to aim without the groove to help
@skylark7921
@skylark7921 3 жыл бұрын
I assume you mean it doesn’t have an arrow rest, by where his hand is. You can just rest the arrow on your hand, but MAKE SURE TO WEAR A GLOVE. Trust me, you don’t want a piece of fletching in your hand. As for aiming, unless you have a bunch of sights and stuff like w a fancy hunting bow, just find the smallest point on your target (I take a sharpie and draw a little dot at the center), draw your bow, and focus on that dot for at least three seconds. After a while you’ll get better and won’t need as long to aim, but to begin 3 seconds should work. As anyone who’s ridden a horse will tell you, your eyes can direct the rest of your body really well. If you look at a small target and have the right form, your body will naturally adjust itself to aim towards the target

0:35 "Pull back, stretch, and release." Think if you were actually qualified and had experience instructing people, you would have a lot more detail than that come on!!! Not anything on talking on stance, back tension, or even how the veins/fletchings/feathers are placed on a rest. Granted he does seem to be a noobie using a fiberglass "longbow" lol

Lol I would assume there's better descriptors, but that's good enough for me. But if you know any other more specific words and terms to use for loading and firing a bow and arrow, can you tell me them? I'm writing a book and I need to know how people properly fire a bow.

Whenever I let go, my arrow flops to a side and the bowstring dry fires. What am I doing wrong? However, if I nock the arrow the wrong way (single fletching on the inside, two on the outside), it shoots straight, but damages the single fletching within 1 or 2 shots.

@ZeiX94Actually, the issue was that the nock wasn't too deep. The issue has been solved after I cut the nock a bit deeper. Please try to input something more constructive next time.

@@aaronbreeds5132 I wasn't rude at all. I said "please" and I made a polite request to his condescending "Do it the right way" rudeness. Second, just because Lars Andersen did it, doesn't make it a "right" way. There's a difference between Target archery, speed archery and trick archery. Claiming that a trick archer is "right" and others are wrong is just playing dumb. Finally, you cannot nock on the right with modern right handed risers with the arrow rest on the left. Technically, you can, but it will give you the worst case of Archer's Paradox. In no way that can be a constructive suggestion on ZeiX's part. I'm not against right side nocking or left side nocking. This is the first time I fletched my own arrows and it was a new bow I was using and I wasn't sure what the problematic bit was. You can bet when a arrow is flopping off to a side, it's not because of which side you are nocking at. It can either be due to an immature archer's grip, or faulty equipment.

U can find them in shops that sell guns, sports stores, and pawn shops. I would recommend pawn shops cause they’ll be cheaper. If you’re beginning you’ll need a good recurve bow, some good arrows, an arm guard, and a finger tab. Those will all be helpful when starting.
