I pretty much only look up stuff for a game when they game has... 1. A puzzle I spend an hour or more on and I just can't figure it out 2. A boss that I've spent hours on and want to know some kind of easier solution to what I was doing or something better than what I was doing 3. Search up codes for a game to get certain rewards I most likely wouldn't have found otherwise in the game

My first BOTW playthrough I only looked up the mirror mountain shrines (somehow I kept getting it wrong for like 20 minutes?) and locations of mini bosses I already defeated but couldn't find again after the red moon

I think I've started realizing that I'm just so insanely more ok with spoilers than other people, I fully knew the plot of a hat in time before I played, I knew almost every puzzle boss and area, and yet when I finally got my copy I still fully enjoyed the experience as much as I would've normally. Hell some games I've went in blind and enjoyed less than I did when I went in knowing what was going on.

I was playing Minecraft like this for a while. I learned that Minecraft is absolutely not designed to be intuitive, even regarding the most basic features. The only true saving grace was the tutorial worlds that were available on console editions before Bedrock took over. Now, those worlds are almost completely forgotten.

I feel like maybe we have different points when we looks things up, I have minor anger issues and get frustrated easily, I look stuff up when I'm two seconds away from throwing my console at a wall. If I cannot solve a puzzle or cannot beat a boss I am not spending hours throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks because the final result won't be rewarding, instead I'm going to be pissed I tried every solution in the world and the right one was right there

I agree in general, but especially agree when it comes to single player games like Deltarune, i wouldn't have been creeped out by the basement in chapter 2 if i hadn't decided to go in completely blind, and i think it made the experience perfect for me. Honestly the biggest problem I have when I look up a solution to anything in game is that videos on said game flood my homepage and it normally results in story spoilers. Also not helping things I never play games on release (more often than not they're too pricey, and there's usually some bugs that won't be fixed for a few months anyway) point is in all that time people upload videos of the full game, so its not like its only a small spoiler, no its usually an important character dead in the thumbnail Its only the last two games I played for the first time that I genuinely got to experience them fully by myself

I never really look up anything online, the very few times I did it was for puzzles that stomped me (or almost all of Zelda II, this game is cruel). And even there, it pained me every time and I rarely did it. Nowadays, I don't look up anything about the game until I'm done with it.. For BOTW, I will find the last 200 Koroks myself or not at all, I won't use a guide. Same for TOTK and the last 80 Koroks I need to find. The little exceptions are other people's walkthrough, I will watch it after I've done most of the game, if I have anything left, it gives me a new perspective to what's left, "Hey, that gives me an idea, I can try that there". Puzzles analysed in a new way, especially if I haven't done them, or new ideas on what to do. To go back to the Koroks, I won't watch a video dedicated to them, but trough someone's normal video, I might see a Korok I haven't found yet, or maybe I have it already, but I will go check by myself.

This is why I loved Elden Ring so much more than God of War Ragnarok I hadn’t even played God of War (2018) when Ragnarok released and I knew they were more story centric games so I indulged in the story It didn’t hit nearly as hard when I played the game for myself since I’d spoiled myself, similar to a lot of games and movies, I spoiled it and ruined it But then there was Elden Ring, I got Elden Ring in November 2022, but never realized it had released until then, I’d heard about it, yet knew nothing, but what I did know was that FromSoftware had a reputation for making serious bangers of games So, with an opportunity to head in blind, I did exactly that And Elden Ring was probably the closest I’ve played to a masterpiece since WII SPORTS But the reason it was so great, was because I had no knowledge prior to ANYTHING in the game, other than the times where I’d get hopelessly lost and look up tutorials on where to go, I did everything on my own, hell I didn’t even know about the bosses I’d be fighting I struggled through the Altus Plateau at level 65 for an hour before asking a friend who’d beaten the game whether I was ready for it or not, and she told me I was around 30 levels below where I should’ve been Elden Ring became my favourite game because I knew nothing about it prior to playing and kept it that way, watching videos only up to points I had reached in the game

I argee with this video. Honestly I felt bad when I looked stuff up for games. But also I think your examples using Slay the Spire and Risk of Rain don't really work because they're Rougelikes means it's going br random(most of the time) Also another point with using guides or bluids from other people is that they could be wrong

for Slay the Spire, the top comment of that reddit post even straight up said "it depends" The only unanimous advice you can get from other players about that game is that your starter strikes and defends are shit and should be removed with impunity

I'm in agreement with you but I feel you missed one other exception: old heavily imbalanced RPGs where the expectation was that was the only game you'd play for months. Its pretty reasonable to look up at least a guide on how *not* to build your character. Fallout 1 and 2 come to mind.

Personally, I only look up guides if I have to or if the game isn't really about the exploration or discovery plus there is a grey area on second play through. Ill admit i have slipped back into bad habbits but this mentality of imersing my self in a world where i share the same level of knowlege as the charater and i dont got youtube i got myself is what made me love super metroid Super metroid isbt my first metroid but first play through unimpressed but when a wise man said "people ask me what to do if you get lost and i say enjoy it get immersed in navigation find landmarks discover things because as soon as you got it mapped out the world gets a lot smaller" With a bit more context and a new perspective i found my favorite snes game and i loved super metroid. For its feeling about navigation Second note playthrough I got creative with my tools I had I got lost stuck and used my brain to solve the problems and my second playthrough is better than my first. I'll admit though since I drop games like children I haven't finished the second play through because I have trouble with dedication to one game unless it really hooks me like for example re4r hooked me that in 3 days I beat the game granted it's summer break but I like games like both more than bf1 and yet since some games feed my reward center I play them a lot. Anyways Get lost and only look up a guide if you get really stuck like spend like an hour on a puzzle than at that point you either drop the game or realize your an idiot thanks to youtube and there was a key at the entrance you missed
