this playlist reminds me of my childhood: I spent most of it in my grandparent’s home, watching 1930s/1940s movies and listening to their favourite songs. my grandfather died last year and it seemed like the silver screen dreams were taken away from me. the reality was too brutal for my grandparents, so they loitered inside their juvenile memories. but it’s all gone now, gone with the wind.

I'm listening to this while writing down my thoughts - that's what I do to relieve my stress. it may sound arrogant, but I'm slowly developing empathy - and I'm very proud of it. I'm learning not to be the horrible person I was anymore, and I'm getting better at make friends and interact with people. I have a lot of trauma because I always have lived alone, and overcoming this is making me, finally, happy again.

Morning sun has this indescribable feeling attached to it. I see it as a sort of melancholy feeling. The person in the painting seems to be worried or sad, as if they dislike waking up in the world Hopper created. It seems to me as if the brighter colors in the painting are a hoax; they are a lie. The world is hypnotized under some mad happiness, and the person in the painting knows it. Furthermore, because of the use of neutral colors within the persons room, and the contrast it has with the outside world, the person could also be feeling excluded, or as if the brightness of the world cannot brighten up their dull life.

This painting is my computer background. I think it is so damned beautiful, even if it is hard to put your finger on. The feelings of loneliness, emptiness, isolation ... of not knowing .... Hopper truly knew how to make them real.

Morning Sun is in my hometown art gallery here in Columbus, Ohio. The first time I saw it was, like...2005 or so. It hit me harder than any other piece of art ever has, especially in person - aching loneliness, waking up all alone in an unfamiliar town. It *hurt*. Maybe it was that I was in a rough place in my own life and I saw in this painting where I was headed. I knew that sooner or later, I'd be that lonely woman sitting on that bed. I'm not sure. But it's stuck with me as a piece of singular, aching poignancy - even if Hopper didn't intend it that way. He probably didn't, I don't know. But I'll never get over that painting.

I was introduced to Hopper's work (other than _Nighthawks,_ though I was not aware he was the painter behind it) through the anime _Texhnolyze,_ an extremely bleak but beautiful show which took very obvious inspiration from his paintings, and seeing these paintings now puts me back into the melancholia - if that's the right word - which I felt when I finished the show. The show had filled me with this sense of somberness and simultaneous deep appreciation that one feels when beholding that more beautiful breed of darkness; it evoked those feelings in a way that hit harder than other occasions where I had felt similarly. Having suffered from the ugliness of depression for nearly my entire life, it's nice to have that feeling again here, as in a way I find that melancholia actually more meaningful and powerful than the more usual, "generic" sort of joy. It's like a brief redemption of that depression - it's transformed, if only for a little while, into something more than just a hideous tormentor.

this is feel like living a peacful but boring life a middle of plain and small town you know everybody, there are no suprises just you and your monotonic life and you wanna change it a little bit you talk with your friends and family, tell them about your shy dreams about traveling "hey mom, maybe should I try to be a writer in chicago?" she laughts and said "don't be silly, dear. you and chicago? this town is too big and dangerous for you." so you give up but still dreaming

if you want a director greatly inspired by Hopper, look into Wim Wenders, one of the directors of New German Cinema movement who has a great sense of geography and the expanse. The soundtrack for Paris, Texas (my all time favorite film) is astounding, Ry Cooder kills it.

This video, the music, the reverb on it, the other-worldly quality. It's completely at its best when played at night, or in the early hours of the morning. Last night I had it on, sat in bed, and drew. It's been ages since I've drawn something properly. I tried to put the video on earlier today when I was working in school but it failed to keep me focussed. Because it makes me not want to focus - it makes me want to lie down and do nothing, sit there and contemplate, draw, paint. Write. In other words, this is totally awesome.

Those notes, those fingers never touching, and the smoke hangs in rooms the cups the steam and meets at the tips of hands brushing past, suffusion of missed chances, that is the brass playing assuredly as the cups we drink from will be left lying used and dirty on the sticky countertops of all those places we barely saw each other in, and to think there were moments when we might have grazed shoulders, smelled the smoke together, hands but wispy blades of wheat dying, slowly, brass colored drone sounds till there's nothing but those empty cups.

I find there can be a very beautiful airy emptiness to Hoppers pictures. I consider this to be a great strength as I have not come across anything quite like it and it is deeply haunting. This is especially true when he has people in his pictures as they seem never to be relating to each other in a positive constructive way. I think of him primarily as a painter who very very successfully captured something about the America of that time.
