One other thing that might be helpful is to remember that value is determined by the viewer, not the creator. You can sink three weeks into a piece only to see it bomb, and do a simple sketch that rakes in thousands of viewers - this isn’t mystical algorithm magic working against you, but rather that what you produced caught the attention of the right person who boosted it to a similar audience. Pay careful attention when this happens and try to understand what it was that met your audience’s needs, so you can isolate and grow something from it.

Perspective is very important. See if there is a better way to get the same result in less time. If your customer wants a hole dug, they don't care if you use an excavator or your bare hands. Don't waste time when tools are available. Look at Beeple. Almost all of his work was essentially kit bashed. If you haven't found your style yet, don't be afraid to iterate/broad stroke for a while. Get ideas in front of people and see what works. Art is nothing without an audience. Fine art, hobbies and commercial projects have very different goals. Don't sit around wondering why your 2 year painting sold for

I got a job right after turning 18. I've always wanted to pursue art, but my situation really pushed me to start working at, I guess, still a bit of an "early age". Now I don't have time or will to draw, I'm both physically and mentally drained everyday. I just come back home, wash up, eat, and sleep, sometimes play video games for a bit, and that's literally been my life for the past year. I thought I was unhappy before all of that, but now I feel even worse and wish I could just stop working, stay home and practice drawing to become an amazing artist and be able to make money off of just that one day... And to think there's really no going back for me and I'll live the rest of my life like this is just... sad. I feel so empty.

Yes, I have seen a lot of artist, some of them friends who are crying about not selling and if you look at their art.. they need to improve a lot, I say so and I usually get an answer like "its my style!", yeah, its your style, but you need to know anatomy, composition, color theory and once you know that stuff you can choose to not use it if you dont want to, but know it!. Another thing I have seen but that no one talks about is that some people just like to cry and dont work. This have happened to me in the past, try to commission an artist for around +100€ in a piece, and be ghosted after asking them to send me their paypal or whatever to make the payment. How do you want me to take you seriously if you dont take yourself seriously? Some artist, like some bussiness are amazing and the reason they are not skyrocketing is because of bad marketing practices for example, but other artist, like some bussiness are just plain bad, and its the true even if it hurts your feelings. and I am not sorry, I am an artist myself.

Well said. The subject is apparently art, it’s not really. It’s making something that people will buy, and all the stuff around that. There are definitely a lot of artists that do really well mostly because they are very good at their art, not because they went to a fucking business class.

As an 3D animation student in their second year, the title of this video alone is enough to remind me of why I'm so worried about going into an art/film-related job. I absolutely love doing art, but at the same time I'm planning on taking business, economics and finance classes (acting has also been a thought in passing, though then again, same issue) as I know that that skill set -- while much more volatile and unpredictable -- is more likely to get me the wealth that I desire, especially compared to animation. I just can't see myself living off of 40k annual salary from animation in a world where inflation and cost of living are skyrocketing into the higher echelons of society, and it tears me apart every time I think about it as I don't know whether I should compromise my artistic side to focus on becoming wealthy, or if I should just roll with the punches and pursue my artistic goals.
@asembo99972 жыл бұрын
I understand you, but dont give yourself an average salary as a goal. Carry yourself higher, work harder and become that 0.001 earning more than 120k a year that yiu thought youd never be
@jamfilledjars2 жыл бұрын
Fast forward the 3 months since I made my original comment: I plan on making more than that. In what way is yet to be determined, but what I _am_ determined to do is take a different path. I still am thinking of doing 3D Animation, but honestly, if someone can make 500k a month with looks selling their flatulence (I wish I didn’t have to say that it was true, but it is), then what is the point of a college degree? All it ends up being is a ludicrous amount of debt with something that I could’ve learned at home. Case in point, I still haven’t learned anything 3D related because I was held back. Ended up searching up a KZbin video on the beginner basics of 3D modelling in Blender and made a donut and glass tea cup within 3-4 hours. Sure, that’s extremely basic, but it’s still more than anything that I have learned in a year and a half of post-secondary. Plan on dropping out, swallow my ego and get a job to support myself. At least then I’ll be able to do what I want to do and pursue my own ambitions, even if it means I have to work for someone else for a while.

This video is super helpful for the business side of art, which most art schools and places don't teacher people about. I was close to going to a school with an art business class, but I had to go to a different school because I didn't have the funds. Because of this, I had to double major in art and business, but there weren't any classes merging the two fields together, so I have to navigate practically blind. Most of the info here I already know thanks to business classes, however, I now understand the merge area I've been looking for. If more people know this side, art would be seen and treated in a better light not just within a person, but to the whole world. Another book I would refere people to is What They Don't Teach in Art School. Not only does this book have helpful art tips and tutorials, it also teaches the business side of art like contracts, finding clients, pricing, and more. It's not the end all be all, but another source to help jumpstart into building art into a career.

Sorry for the necro post. Wish this advice was given to us Ai students during our school in the mid to late 00's. My issue was definitely rushing art with shoddy quality. My style is too sloppy while lacking form. Was so poor until just recently I couldn't afford good tools, social media wasn't as prevalent until now. My day we just had Myspace and DeviantArt, both platforms don't get taken seriously at all. Also, was timid of learning 3D and tried to tough it out as a 2D artist for storyboards. Looking back at my old portfolios after college I can't stop cringing how bad my stuff looked yet I was so proud. Fun tip, remote jobs didn't exist back then either. If you had an art degree and live in not-LA, you will get rejection letter a-plenty. Now? If you have the tools you can work from pretty much anywhere. Yesterday was a good time, now is just as good. Lots of ways to choose from. Another big thing I like to touch upon is social pressure to quit. You live in a poor rural town with no opportunities, long hour jobs and family-friends that weigh you down? Yeah... not easy to cut off and after so many failures I threw in the towel. People will always quote to me the "definition of insanity" when it comes to pursuing this, but it's misused. If you don't practice and get better you will fall behind. There are so much more ways to succeed with this. Also ignore those that ask you to draw them something out of the blue for free, they will waste your time.

Unfortunately there is nothing artistic about spending 2 years of your life trying to build a business, thinking about liquidity, profit, cash flow, sales, when what you love is making art. The fact that many people skip is the fact that before you start to earn you need really a lot of effort and time to grow your company or name. We are used to have things immediatly nowadays and I think it makes some people resign too fast.

Are social media that great for artist? I can take your own channel as an example you went from creating game model to teaching video then mostly talking about it as a KZbinr. I can be wrong I feel like it is the most likely path of social media success. By that I mean the art skill is used to sell social media stuff and not social media used to sell art. Is there somebody else who see some kind of weird outcome like me? I can also use the Vtuber as an other example of this. Almost everybody is an illustrator a singer or some other kind of artist/talent but they mostly use that talent to convince people to watch their talking and gaming stream. Their art is not what they sell but their marketing tool to appeal to their fan. It works these people can pay their bill but creating the art is not really their job anymore.

I honestly also see that side of things. Where the art and social media become alternate mediums. But the target is mostly for money in the end and sometimes not for the viewers no matter how many times they say that they do it for the viewers as a side excuse. I mean look at the others. They get huge amounts of donations and yet they tell the viewers that "they should save up that money" while still blindly keeping it, not "accepting" its keeping. Not even a little initiative to return a portion of it for honesty. But alas, we just let it slip by becuz we're all hypocrites and that could also relate to how we all have different ways of succeeding. Viewers/audience = income Art = appeal/medium Social media = booster/medium But in terms of this channel, they're actually "giving" something significant and productive to the viewers. Like essential information covered in this singular video to help and teach viewers to become successful. So in terms of majority of the Vtubers(and gaming KZbinrs) Its mostly just entertainment interests of the viewer being used by the youtuber. And as much they say its a difficult task, its definitely simple and doable given the trends. But other art KZbinrs want something more "original" or "unique" and that's usually wut kicks them out of the trend. Giving them a 50/50 chance of getting the hard or the easy way. And that depends on the artist themselves. This is my opinion and should definitely not be taken seriously by any means. But thanks if you come this far to reading my message.

Mmm. Okay so it's unlikely that my opinion will count for a lot here, but I'd like to toss some thoughts out. Firstly, thank you for the video. I appreciate your efforts and I do not disagree with some of your insights. I do however feel that this strikes me as primarily a 80% Marketing, 20% Art video, where it's made obvious, whether you intended it or not, that marketing is more important than originality. I'm not claiming that you're wrong, just that I disagree with the morality of something like this, or at the very least, that the advice here will help many make money by chasing "pop culture reference" hooks and people who are incredibly drawn to love of sameness and familiarity. Yes, this is the world modern electronically focused humans are swimming in, and the video also relied heavily on "Social" media outlets to promote their art, but for people/artists, places like that have become so utterly toxic, that any time spent there felt like arsenic for my heart. I once used it, but do not anymore. Even when I did use it, I'd find myself there, letting my productivity slip away. Again, thank you for the work you did here and thank you for reading my thoughts.

I'm 15 years old and I am looking for a hobby to pick up that will allow me to make money in the future. Currently I am looking at two options; Programming and 3D art. Unfortunately, programming already has a huge starting salary even compared to the final salary of most 3D designers. I like doing digital art though, but I feel like I would just be wasting my time and by the time I am looking for colleges, I'll go to programming anyways. Do you think there is a way that an artist can make more than a programmer?

I really dislike the idea that one of the most important parts is "social media", especially Instagram. I hate Facebook, Instagram and the superficiality and ephemerality of those platforms, everything there is mostly fake, it makes people dumber, nobody reads anymore because of social media, it makes everyone depressed. If that's what is needed, then I prefer to starve. Kidding, I'm an old grumpy software engineer, so I can keep being an engineer and do art just for fun/hobby, so I can completely skip the "social media" part.

You will have to learn even more, self analysis is the key, if you will focus on somehow making an artwork viral on insta, you will get lost, instead just forget about the insta and algorithm, and focus on getting your "Product" ready, and post the updates, right people will get attracted and If you they liked your product they will buy it if they can.

Kinda hard to go indipendent, when you got a Job as an artist (concept art) with an awesome salary...You can either grind MORE art everyday, which is kinda impossible tbh OR quit the job and start from square one plus learning everything about stuff that you really don't like to do (marketing, sales strategies, social media algorithms, shipping, etc etc)

I've just gotten into my last year of high school, and I'm hoping to make it as a concept artist, or perhaps specialize somewhere else in the art and game industry. I've had the fortune of completing most of my graduation requirements early, so I've been using my freed up schedule to take advantage of several classes my school offers, including a class on digital arts, one in animation and 3D modeling, and one in game design. I've also been trying to get back into drawing more often, mainly digitally, and promote my art and other passion projects on social media. Are these good steps to be taking now? What about after I graduate?

The reality is however that Most people who want to be an Artists are either Very Bad and delusional or dont commit to it Like a real 9 to 5 Job. I have a full time Job and still Draw every day as If i Had 2 Jobs. I Burned Out a few Times by now, i have to make myself make more Breaks. Sometimes i do Breaks and watch how the pros work. And i still cant compared to the Real pros in Terms of Skill. Doing Art for over 10 years(digital 2years) and Nobody is gonna Stop me even If i dont earn from it. What is really challanging for me is Doing all the stuff Outside drawing. Like setting Up a patreon or setting Up an instapage or Putting all the Art in different websites, adjusting, lowering the quality for the free art. I even did several short Comics in advance for 1 year now wich i am planning to sell somehow. Currently just Putting my Art on pixiv, i dont Need external graduation but to See where i stand. Someday...when i feel ready, i will Set it Up as a Business.
