Queen of the Geeks, writer and star of The Guild and founder of Geek & Sundry, Felicia Day, came by Google NYC to talk about her first book "You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost): A Memoir."
About the book (complete info found at goo.gl/oZ3XIs):
From online entertainment mogul, actress, and “queen of the geeks” Felicia Day comes a funny, quirky, and inspiring memoir about her unusual upbringing, her rise to Internet-stardom, and embracing her individuality to find success in Hollywood.
The Internet isn’t all cat videos. There’s also Felicia Day-violinist, filmmaker, Internet entrepreneur, compulsive gamer, hoagie specialist, and former lonely homeschooled girl who overcame her isolated childhood to become the ruler of a new world…or at least semi-influential in the world of Internet geeks and Goodreads book clubs.

I had never heard of her when I downloaded the audio version of the book. I cannot say how great it is. Funny, entertaining and a great listen. I am only 1/2 way through, so I thought I'd go check out her KZbin stuff. I have just looked at 1 of her videos, so my learning curve is steep. The Book is a must read check it out on audio as she is so enthusiastic and funny when she reads it. (Only down side is no pictures that she references in the audio book)

I (binge) read her book in a few hours as soon as I got it. As a fellow gamer and fan of her work, it was very compelling and relatable. I watched The Guild (but did not buy the DVDs; sorry Felicia...or I guess you're welcome since that was one less thing to stamp?) since it first came out and instantly fell in love with it. But looking back at it now, I can better appreciate it knowing (as much as a reader could) the sweat, tears, and effort that went into it. Thank you for a glimpse behind the curtain and for putting out such great content. Thank you, Felicia, for being you.

That second-last question about return on investment is absolutely not boring, and I'd love to see an extended discussion of that with Day and other web content creators.

I purchased this book, being a fan of Felicia Day, how could I not, right? I have three words to describe this book: Fan-Tas-Tic! She's very open and honest in her book and now that I've read it cover to cover, I've given it to my son as a "must read" because a lot of what he goes through, she's been through, and being that he's a huge fan of hers, and all things gaming and anime, it's something I know he will appreciate, and will be inspired by. Thank you Felicia for all your hard work!

I love that she made a niche for herself, The host does leave something. I just honestly dont think that they jived well and I don't think he understands her appeal. She pushed through and made a whole company for herself and such an inclusive community. It aint perfect but she got a damn book deal and a tour! That is enormous for a youtuber :)

curious thing: felicia adds characters to her creations that she shapes in the form of people she comes across with... nerds, socially akward people, obsessive people, artists, performers, businessmen, you name it. in short, people you should be able to find without trouble if you take a look around and watch and percieve the behavior of the people around you. basically, EVERYONE around you fits into some category. so.... why would anyone want to watch or read any of her works of art if they can simply live the same story she's trying to tell, by simply engaging in conversation with someone else? why would I want anyone telling me about the experience of driving a car, if I can just hop onto a car and drive it? just asking.... for the sake of argument.

+onehandyguy Sounds like you take it for granted, and no you couldn't get the same experience by just engaging in conversation because you probably wouldn't share the same perspective of these things. Also the guild was a humorous exaggeration of these people and their perspectives. Personally I benefitted from what Felicia shares in her book because I'm a creative person and it is interesting to hear how she dealt with similar challenges in life. Personally I'm still dealing with challenges in my life so the book inspires me to be more couragous and confident.

Yeah, I think they definitely should have gotten a different interviewer - he really didn't bounce off of her energy, nor show any enthusiasms (even Felicia commented about it ... definitely not a good thing when the interviewee called you out on your interviewing style...) He did get better as the interview went on though.
