Felicia Day (author, actress Supernatural, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Guild) stops by to discuss the pursuit of her own creative endeavors after feeling like she didn’t belong. She explains the positives and negatives of her socially isolated homeschool upbringing and people-pleasing tendencies. Felicia touches on imposter syndrome, the commoditization of artists, and the importance of setting the template for those who come after you in your industry. Mayim and Felicia consider the consequences of allowing others to determine your self-worth, especially through the use of social media.

How early parts of this episode resonates in me, saving all distances! How I feel when you need to “disguise” yourself bc social or working events! When the kid you’re always preferred to play with boys better than certain girls, who hated gossiping and were never interested in things like that. When you liked to play with Legos, trains and sports who mostly were “boyish” than with dolls. I remember how horrified my mom was when at my 11 years she finally bought me my first jeans and an sky blue checked shirt..bc my nuns school were going to vivac at the mountain.. Maybe those a bit “outcast” years prepared me to my future, working (and leading) at a very masculine kind of work..And maybe how lucky I am for being mom of boys! 😉 Thank you guys, for this wonderful, again, episode I’ll finish to watch while at lunch time! 💜 And after lunch I’m still laughing at Mayim’s faces while Scott explained her what was crypto currency…😂🤩

I first found Felicia in the first season of The Guild (via her producing partner Kim Evey)... and I loved the show so much. I'm not a gamer, but the characters and the sense of community of geeks at the heart of the show resonated. I still remember when she was ready for season 2 (I think) of The Guild and needing funding, how she kept working at it until she found a partner that would let her retain creative control of the content. That was when it would release on the XBox platform for a set number of weeks, then be made available through her own channels. Her commitment to her creative property and her authenticity impressed me. She really is the godmother of the internet! I would give a limb to have lunch with her, Mayim, and Grace Helbig... strong, funny, creative women, all!

I found The Guild in 2010, around the beginning of season 3, while recovering from “congratulations, it wasn’t ovarian cancer” extensive surgery. I swear, the overheating laptop on my abdomen while watching nascent KZbin and Netflix helped me heal more quickly. Little did I realize how much Felicia was going through as a creator at the same time. At least, I left positive comments…

Yes!!!! Banks make a huge profit off over draft fees. Long story short, I am a small business owner and just starting out and kept going over in my bank “learning how balance my money better” and left and right I kept getting hit with $35 over draft fees for something as small as $1.00 or a little more and when I had money going in the next day it would look like I would avoid the over draft fee, nope they kick it on the day after my money goes back in. So over these fees.

Congrats for today’s guest & episode (Crypto knowledge apart 😂) Two powerful, intelligent, articulate women interacting..& we, as Jonathan, admiring them! And that Iowa thing, Jonathan 😉! How I laughed while you explained the story about Mayim denying that someone’s trying to date her! How sweet but funny Jonathan was while explaining it! Adorable!💜 About crypto currecies: my geekiest friend bought one single bitcoin at April 2013 by a few more than 250 $ and sold it in November 2020 by near 19.000 $…And I still put same faces as Mayim while someone tries to explain me the security backing cryptos…🤪

Mayim, I'm so glad I watched this episode; there was so much going on. The more I listen to you, the more I start to understand how low the entertainment world is. (But, I loved your comment about being queen of the land where they don't wear pants.) If you're interested, I would like to suggest an episode with David Draiman, and another, maybe, with Nico Muhly. Both, musicians, have, each in his own way, described struggles with depression and mental illness. As others have noted, Scott's description of crypto was hamfisted (though I think he is fundamentally correct.) I saw the trailer to "As They Made Us." There is a line or two in there that sounded so familiar, things my sister and I would have said to each other as we cared for our own parents. Finally, Purim Sameach.

For that, and for the lovely people you appear to be, A Big Heartfelf, Sincere, THANK YOU, for all the work you do to bring so much value, and such Joy to all of us who tune in. XO, TRULY Grateful 🙏 I felt compelled to comment now, because I honstly can't bring myself to believe that Mayim could be ignorant to much of anything lol😄🙌🏽 , and I "secretly" 😉think maybe she knows more about crypto currency than she let on...😉🤙🏽 At any rate, I thought it appropriate to share a link to a company who (Happily!) I think shares a similar mission to that of Felicia Days coin. What they are tying to do with their crypto projects, seems like a positive answer to many of humanities problems. So Thank You again for your time, your good taste, and as always your humor and wisdom. 😊🙏🏽. I would also like to Acknowledge you for Your Courage. 🏆🎋 . You're a bit outside the lines, and ya look good doin it sister!!! And we all know what a sweet Canadian cuttie you have at your side, well done. Lovefest chat between these two great ladies was awesome❣️ Two ladies I resonate with and respect. I was a tomboy, didn’t want to be transgendered into a boy, O just wished I was born a boy. By 11 though, didn’t want to be a boy, or girl, I wanted to be a bird. Later on an Angel of the biblical God. I finally accepted my womanhood in my late 20s. Fully embraced. But still a bit of a tomboy girl, just not a girly girl, but still girly preferences, too. I watched The Guild (2007-2013) first and used to watch some of Geek & Sundry when she was running it. I liked Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (2008) but her show is better to me. Watched only her episodes on series, except Supernatural, but didn’t watch all the season of that series, so again, only watched for her episodes somewhere past halfway. Even saw obscure movies and everything she was on that I could find. Rewatched the episodes with Felicia of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003). Loved her web show Co-Optitude with her and her brother. The Flog, where she honestly share her discomfort, but somehow managed to be funny and endearing at the same time. I follow her socials. Not as closely as I used to waiting for her next project. But since the baby, slowed down, because she slowed down, too. I noticed, I don’t much care to read or hear about celeb’s kids, after I finished my 9 years of childcare work and volunteering to help single moms. So over it now. I love cats more😅…😂~ To me mini humans are not as endearing as they used to be. Especially after an incident where I was subtly accused but of course, nothing like what people feared had happened. I just want a Frappuccino to stop feeling angry at my then BFF, who was having issues with her two times cheated ex, and the stress of it all, was too much, as I am more of a hermit introvert at times. And she wasn’t respecting my boundaries of needing alone time. Anyways, the joy of been childlike was ruined by the adults mostly. And the one kid who acted too much like an adult. The other boys knew I just wanted my Frappuccino and didn’t understand why the adults were worried. I did it in secret because my supervisor didn’t like me doing it. Sharing or buying. But it was my habit, because I didn’t want to let anyone feel left out. Even the don’t tell the other kids was for that reason. But of course, they told and people knew I sometimes snuck off to buy a sweet drink, like 7/11 slushies or Frappuccinos. I get why the worries, of course. But they questioned all the boys, and still for months made me feel like I might have meant something I didn’t. I was proven innocent, but still, my supervisor kept freaking out. She just needed to make sure another worker was with me at all times to stop worrying. But she was too cheap to spend on a new worker. Or just send the other teacher at the same time, instead of staggering the timing. Whatever. So over it. My only struggle was solo, and fantasy wise. But sadly, just because I remained single and my emotional disorder made me decide to be honest so the guy who could handle it would prove himself trustworthy didn’t work out. No, so I prefer isolation, my tower, my fortress of solitude. I loved Superman as a child, first movie, the Christopher Reeve version. I am set apart for the LORD, and I am fine with that. It’s others who have a problem with it. Even me talking about potentially becoming a real nun. But not Catholic. As in just a christian nun. But been a nun is not even truly biblical. So I rejected the idea in time. It’s human made thing. I am a child of God. Created for His good purpose. Beloved. (Not tainted by the male toxic sins, because God Is Holy, Pure and Right). I blame humans for the suffering of the world. Cain murdered his brother. God warned him and then convicted him and gave him consequences. Same to his parents for their poor choices. I always get disappointed and mad at humans for blaming God. And not acknowledging the Truth about humans and our frailties, shortcomings, mistakes, whatever version of falling short we use to excuse our poor choices. And not really understanding His Gracious Truth in Agape Love. I always remember my spiritual experience of been born again in the Holy Spirit. Baptized by living water and holy fire at different times of my journey. But only God fully understands as humans tend to want to put it under “mental illness”. Or, it’s her emotional disorder. Satan is not real. Then why do some believe in God. Refinement allows satan to cause suffering only when we allow sin in our lives. But the spirit is eternal. We’ll see when Jesus returns, God’s Kingdom is established for eternity. No one will be able to deny, then. Glory Is God’s❣️ 💖✝️📖🕊💖

@derzzsh - I would suggest a listen to Cody Marx Bailey on this topic, myself. As a former political volunteer you’re most effective when doing opposition research, which is one of the reasons I listen to so many different types of podcasts. I don’t ever want to live in an echo chamber - I have a lot to learn from people with different experiences. But many very smart people disagree on whether this is a good thing or a bad thing. Continuing to listen to all viewpoints gives me a lot to consider.

I love Felicia. Many outstanding successes in a bunch of different pretty new fields, where you needed to come up with solutions and strategies on your own. Very inspirational. ... On a different topic @Mayim : There was a lot very wrong incomplete and mixed up in the tried explanation of crypto currency in the end. Probably bet just wipe that from memory and invite an expert to explain it correctly, if you're interested.

First of all thank you for the attempt at what crypto currency and NFT's are! I was laughing because I was like Mayim thinking what? I really enjoyed the episode and found Felicia Day's background very interesting. Such a good point she made about how on projects and then future projects men were brought along but not the women. I have noticed this with several popular shows where the male actors go on to new shows and they get a whole new cast of young good looking women to fill the space of the show. It is really sad. Just as Felicia said, why can't the women come along, they were part of the success and the team as well.

Did I understand her to say her family was poor? Parents were highly educated professionals. Where did the money go?

She's talked a bit about it in the past; they wrote a role for her (possibly Emily - which Laura Spencer ended up playing) but it was right when Geek and Sundry was taking off (so she was acting in, writing and producing a whole bunch of shows, plus running the company), and she'd got a recurring role in Supernatural, so she didn't have time to do it. After that I guess it was a combination of her being burnt out and needing time off (and then having a kid) and them not having a role that would have worked for her.

Is this the interview where Felica unintentionally disparages a film in which the interviewer appears?
