As someone who was a "not like other girls" girlie, SO MUCH YES. I was dealing with undiagnosed neurodivergency (and thus a lot of bullying, talking behind my back, etc) and a society telling me what a woman should and shouldn't be and telling me that in order to be a "proper woman" I had to fit into this mould. My "not like other girls" phase was spurned by a distaste and frustration with the rhetoric I'd been fed all my life and the split second judgments I got for not fitting their idea of girlhood or womanhood. It is okay to be a feminine girlie with your iced coffee, nails and makeup and it is okay to be a nerdy girlie with your baggy comfy clothes and nonfiction books. Neither is less deserving.

Me as a teenager: “I’m not like other girls” Me as an adult: “turns out I’m EXACTLY like other autistic girls”
@elaineb70654 ай бұрын
Same boat as both of you!!! I wasn't like other girls because I had undiagnosed (until 27) autism too!!!
@linden51654 ай бұрын
I always felt that way and had kind of judged myself assuming the only cause could be internalised misogyny. Turns out it was because I am autistic and genderfluid+queer and I actually was not like girls because I wasn't one. The enforced feminity expectation thing caused me a lot of discomfort growing up. It's much more comfortable now it's a choice to go in or out of feminine expression.

Dude me too! I wasn't diagnosed with ADHD and didn't understand I was asexual until I was 26. As a teen, I definitely thought I was 'not like other girls.' Turns out there are plenty of girls like me, I just hadn't met them yet 🥳

Just some Harley Quinn info: she hasn't been with the Joker for a while in the comics, like for a decade or so. Her current relationship is with Poison Ivy. The Joker shows up every now and then in Harley Quinn centric comics but they've never been permanently back together and their relationship is portrayed with nuance and as a toxic one. She also broke up with him in the movies. She's independent from him in the Birds of Prey movie and the 2nd Suicide Squad movie. Using Harley for a not like other girls post is also so wrong, she wouldn't agree with it:D

I used to be such a “not like other girls” as a teen. Luckily I was also shy and introverted and didn’t really have social media yet, so I couldn’t be an asshole about it. Then in the first week of college a girl started talking to me and, oh no, she liked makeup! And fashion! And boys! The horror! And then we became friends and I found out that people who like those things have other interests too and are actual human beings! The enlightenment! Also in my 30s I figured out I’m a trans guy. I wasn’t like other girls cause other girls are girls 🤷♂️

I think this stems from the idea that if I, as a woman, enjoy traditionally feminine and girly things, than I am no more as a person than the two-dimensional female stereotype in media. And this in turn means I am not special or unique in any way unless I distance myself from that trope by avoiding things that are "basic". Allowing myself freedom in what I enjoy has made me more unique and special than forcing myself to be in opposition to every stereotype of women. That "not like other girls" personality has become a trope in its own right!
@MichelleHarris-zf6wn3 ай бұрын
You made some really interesting points about femininity towards the end. How it is seen as negative trait that I had not really considered before. Before I realized I was Gay and very Tomboyish and alternative I think I was a bit of a pick me when I felt other girls were just "conforming" to feminine traits as it felt so foreign to me. Everyone is different but also everyone is kind of the same 😂

For the post at 4:28 I don't understand that one either, and it has to be made by someone that doesn't understand that all that's in the first bag are contact lenses, lotion, medication (looks like allergy meds), mint tin, and some sort of spray can, I can't quite make out the product. Then the other bag has just a few makeup items, and it isn't really clear which bag is supposed to be theirs or "the average girl's". Either they'res saying girls don't care enough about their appearance or care too much, and either idea is a bit rough. 12:32 They better not be feeding it to their toddler that way! Do they want their child to choke!? I understand a lot of the pinsta-insta style aesthetic food people can make for their kids can be a bit much, but at least it's still baby sized bites they can eat. Also yes, I believe those are collards. 17:25 Can confirm, it is hard to remain a solid female, especially in this heat. I keep returning to a liquid state. D: Also, I dunno what it is about shitting on Taylor's new album, and I'm a little too scared to ask. I know hating on her music has been a bit of a meme for the last ten or so odd years, but shouldn't people be getting tired of that by now? I mean, she's just a musician making music that works for her? It ain't no different from the country singers waxing on about their supped up truck, their dog, or murdering alcoholic husbands, or an alternative rock band singing about raging against the various systems of life holding them down.

29:00 I think so too, Jayme. As I have grown to express myself more freely as a man who just loves a LOT and has always suppressed my feelings of joy and sadness and all other emotions because of toxic reactions to my happiness and dismissal of any emotions, I find myself SCREAMING HOW ADORABLE THOSE TWO BUTTERFLIES ARE! Dancing over the flowers 💞💝💖 Or how I LOVE THOSE SHOES! And THE COLOUR of someone's nails. And all that jazz! The only reason I didn't do that as a young adult was because of the reactions of a$$h0les. And I've stopped caring about what they think and started paying more attention to what makes ME happy and the people around me that I actually do value the opinions of, and they all think it's an amazing and beautiful difference between how I express myself now so sincerely and freely as opposed to the locked up calculating self they couldn't gauge or trust.
