Totally disagree with most of the comments. I'm old school and my idea of woodworking is that you are either moving a woodworking tool, or moving the wood into a tool 'with your hands'. The tool can be motorized or hand powered but it must take effort on the part of the woodworker to facilitate cutting, shaving, or gouging of the wood. If you are simply placing a piece of wood on a platform and then keying in the process on your laptop, you are not woodworking. Now if you have made a jewelry box or some other fancy woodworking project and you want to adorn it with a nice logo or design that you made on your laser then that is ok with me. I say this because now you are making your project more appealing to the consumer. BUT that part of the project is not woodworking!

@@Bearded-Viking-WoodWorks Using a CNC machine and calling it woodworking is like saying your a baker when you buy a cake mix and just add water. Not the same. The ingredients are the same, the time in the oven is the same, but the flavour and texture of the cake had nothing to do with you. You can't take credit for that part. It was only your idea. Someone, or something else did all the work.

If you are cutting wood with the laser, it's a form of wood working because, heck, you are working with wood. I love my 10 Watt x-tool. I'm looking forward to expanding some day. I have a ton of fun with it. It really does bring me joy.

First and foremost Daniel, it’s awesome that XTool reached out to you. They recognize real woodworking talent and want to enhance your abilities with another tool. I look back many, many years ago when my kids were very young, yes I had a typewriter but I wanted to enhance their abilities I got a computer my friends thought I was crazy why waste all that money so-on and so-on. Now we rely on them as part of our daily routine, no different than our cell phones! My Father was a Journeyman Carpenter and Cabinet Maker, I watched him for hours with Non-Powered hand tools, when I got into woodworking 75% of all my tools were powered and now they’re mostly cordless. I remember talking with my Dad before he passed and he was amazed at CNC machines and how accurate they were. I wonder what he would say now with Lasers. Your still a Carpenter, Woodworker, Cabinet Maker always will be, you just have another enhanced tool that will give you more abilities and creativity. Awesome video Daniel as always, take care, Wayne from Alberta Canada.

My old instructor wouldn't let us near power tools until we were competent on hand tools. So, a scrollsaw, could be used when you mastered a fret or coping saw. The laser is just the next step. If I'm still around in 40 years I'd love to know what comes next.

If you look up the definition of Woodworker in a dictionary- there’s a picture of you, Daniel! I have no problem with you using the laser engraver to enhance your projects bcuz I have the utmost confidence that you’re not going to stand back and allow a machine to take full credit for the wonderful projects that you come up with- you’re gonna get your hands full of sawdust one way or another! How do I know this? It’s bcuz you’re a dang woodworker!!! And a fine one at that! 👍🤘🌟💖

Great cutting, layered project! I have been using a 5 watt laser engraver for over a year now and love it's customization possibilities, and so do my customers! This machine does not diminish your woodworking abilities, it enhances them! Adding another skill is never bad. How did you learn dovetailing? By digging in and trying it. Taking on a very complicated cutting project for your first time trying it shows what a bad ass rockstar you are!

I think it is simply a tool to use to get an end result. That is all that matters. Does it make you a "non woodworker"? Nope. It makes you a wood working artist. Same with a CNC. I don't look down on people who use a tool or method to create some cool things. End of the day you have to program it just like pulling a tape measure to mark wood prior to cutting it on the table saw. Just a different way to get there. I would love one, but, don't have the space to be honest. Awesome vid bro!

Your wood working skills don't go away just because you use a laser. The laser cutter is just another tool. The nice thing about the laser cutter is you can put your supports for your shelving designs in the laser cutter and engrave a design on it before you put the project together. There are tons of things you can do with it in conjunction with your regular woodworking skills to help make it so you can charge more for your projects and sell them faster. You can add inlays to projects. You can make intricate cutouts to fill with colored epoxy. You can make engravings and fill them with paint. There are tons of ideas on KZbin for things to do with a laser cutter. It is definitely a rabbit hole that will take you to new creative vistas if you let it. By the way, the 2 watt module uses a different wave length so you can cut and engrave materials the 20 watt module can't handle because of the color of the laser's light.

I think it's possible to add a laser to your arsenal to make better woodworking products. I also believe that there are a lot of people that use a laser to do all their work and call themselves a woodworker. I think if you click a button and walk away, then come back to a finished project (some assembly required) it isn't "woodworking". That would be automated manufacturing.

In your case, it's just one more (really awesome) tool added to your arsenal. Using it as an add-on to elevate your projects doesn't take anything away from your woodworking skills. If all someone know is how to use a lazer and nothing else, then I would say they need to learn a bit more about woodworking before calling themselves a woodworker.

Like you i bought a laser/ cnc machine. It was one which moved the bed and not the laser. The software was weak and i invested another £70 for lightburn software. The amount of times i almost launched it out of my workshop. I gave up in the end and sold it on at a massive loss. You've made it look easy here and id be tempted to get a recommended machine.
