I remember a conversation with my Mom 30 years ago when I was making entry level middle class income. I told her that I thought it was not enough. She asked me three questions (my Mom was a child during the Great Depression and remembered the experience): "Do you have any serious medical problems preventing you from working?" I answered no. "Can you pay your rent each month with your own money?" I answered yes. "Can you feed yourself each month?" Again I answered yes. She then told me to stop complaining because I was doing a lot better in life financially than most, especially world-wide. She passed a decade ago and I follow her advice to this day.

Near retirement physician here: saved very well for retirement, live well below my means (paid off home, no car payments, no credit card debt, and don’t buy expensive stuff)- ZERO social media presence by my choice, and at 60 years of age, getting ready to get out of the medical practice I work in (maybe another 3 years). Expensive stuff is just that, expensive stuff that for the most part is not needed. We spend properly to make our home comfortable, for us, and other than that, don’t spend too much overall. I drive 2 old cars (31 and 20 years old) and the Mrs SUV is now 12 years old (which I maintain, and runs as new despite higher mileage). 3 motorcycles as well and the newest of these is now 21 years old as well. New stuff becomes old and boring rather quickly. No one knows my net worth and I plan to keep it that way. I’m very satisfied with the way life is going and want for nothing actually.

We’ve balanced out our life by enjoying experiences, vacations, and by buying things we like. It’s important to save well for retirement, but to be miserly throughout life without enjoying it along the way just to have a bucket full of money that you may not be able to spend down and enjoy in retirement doesn’t make sense to me. But, “fronting” your lifestyle to impress others or to make you “feel” well off when you’re not is a foolish endeavor.

I lived in Dhaka, Bangladesh for awhile. Loved to roam the back alleys neighborhoods. During Eid, people would buy a cow and tie it up outside their door awaiting slaughter. Before that day, they would decorate the cow with ribbons etc. Sometimes you could see a decoration war ... the neighbors cow had more ribbons than yours, so you add a few more ribbons. The next day the neighbor retaliated by adding even ribbons more plus a sparkly thing or two ... and so on. Who had the best cow (or goat)? This meant a lot in a back alley neighborhood.

I strongly think that there should be a high school class that covers all of this - how people fake so much of themselves on social media. That, and how to better see click-bait titles. Another is how ads are designed to make people scared, insecure, or lacking in some way, before presenting you with their "solution." Being sensitive to how scams work, etc. I think it would go a long way toward "waterproofing" our young people. Regarding jets, I worked for a large company where the owners could have very easily owned their own Gulfstream 4. Nope, they lease, and have no social media presence.

There is always someone with more or less money than you. Irrespective of how much money someone has, there will always be someone with a "better" or "worse" life than you...unless you choose to stop comparing your life or your means with others. One of the few true blessings of having more than you need is you no longer worry about how much (more or less) someone else might have. You are simply grateful to have more than you need. How do you achieve that? By understanding your means and then learning to live quite well, within those means. The problem with many folks is they live beyond their means, consistently, even as those means increase. If you flip that around and always live well within your means, even as they increase, you'll gradually attain that level of wealth (more than you need) I mentioned earlier.
@blujeans94627 ай бұрын
It would be great if some of these You Tube channels stopped trying to make the younger generation so angry by telling them that the older generation got their wealth so much easier than they will ever have it. And they will never be able to get a house like those before them did. Reality is, no they can't afford a $400k house - but they could find a nice starter home - that with some sweat equity put into (like the older folks had to do), they'll eventually be able to afford the home of their dreams. Everyone seems to think if they can't afford something immediately, they never will.

Now you are retired and depend on your investment, it’s best you redistribute your capital. To simplify the process, you could allocate your resources with the help of a financial advisor.

That's a great concept, in my opinion. I tried handling my stock account on my own, and I quickly lost half of my funds. That's why I decided to work with a financial advisor. I have since made refunds totaling $680K.

Retirement is now more difficult than it was in the past. I've been saving for a long time instead of investing, and right now I only have about $400K. considering all the inflation, i'm thinking of investing in stocks, i dont just have idea on market strategies.

At a point like this, when the pressure is already on you to retire, its best recommended you seek the services of an advisor, as this allows you make smarter investing decisions.

It's unfortunate most people don't have such information. I don't really blame people who panic. Lack of information can be a big hurdle. I've been making more than $30k passively by just investing through an advisor, and I don't have to do much work. Doesn't matter if the economy is misbehaving; great wealth managers will always make returns.

Do you mind sharing info on the advisor who assisted you?

Annette Christine Conte is the licensed coach I use. Just research the name. You'd find necessary details to work with a correspondence to set up an appointment.

I appreciate it. After searching her name online and reviewing her credentials, I'm quite impressed. I've contacted her as I could use all the help I can get. A call has been scheduled.

Thanks for all your tips and pointers! My wife turns 68 on 9/11. Better to start receiving SS benefits in 2024 or wait until 2025? Thoughts are greatly appreciated. I'm 62 and will not take SS benefits for another 7 years or so. Thanks soo much! Terry

I own a Ferrari. None of my coworkers know I own it nor does my family. Owning a car like that elicits all sorts of negativity in people. It's not a problem with strangers, but for family and coworkers, it would not be a positive result.

Yep. They’d expect you to pay for everything. I retired at 52 and now everyone expect me to pay when we go out, I don’t like it!

From Desiderata - Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Ah, materialism. I was in that trap when I was a younger man, but not anymore. The things that I really think are valuable now in life, or that make me really happy don’t cost money. I’m not saying that a certain amount of money isn’t necessary because no one wants to live in poverty. Beyond that, however, always chasing something you don’t have to benchmark with your peers or make yourself feel happy briefly right after you purchase is a fools game. That means you haven’t really learned much in life IMHO. You can’t take it with you, and if you are in the retirement age band, that moment will come sooner than you would probably like or possibly sooner than you might expect.
