I prefer the characters that were heroes and villains at the sametime. For example, spiderman is known as a hero, but spiders have always been looked at as a bad thing to people plus he has some scenes where he doesn't give a shit about people like about the other newspaper photographer and spidermans ex.

I see, so MF DOOM is portraying himself as a character that represents the hip-hop industry as a whole (in attitude atleast). He's a villian just like any other rapper these days, they pretend to be your friends then send out stand ins, they don't care about you, the music, or the message all they care about is money. More and more rappers just tell you what you wanna hear so you'll buy a over-priced half-assed album. They're too afraid to be unique because it might not sell, kind of explains why not just rap but the music industry as a whole is just becoming more of the same bland garbage despite the genre.

I don't think doom doesn't care about his fans. I actually think you could argue the opposite. This man has created an entire persona, a whole storyline and meta for a rapper that we can like, and think about. All the shit he does is kinda for the fans. He is doing it so we have something to care about. Think about it, he hasn't talked about his real life since the 90s basically it's all clever word play and random world building, being a doom fan is like listening to a never ending radio show, and when it tried to be adapted live...well it doesn't work lol.

I’ve noticed the same problem in fan-bases with other fictional characters and alter-egos that artists create as well; the fans either unknowingly or unwillingly refuse to acknowledge that the protagonist, anti-hero, or alter-ego is fundamentally wrong in in their actions and beliefs. This is because an underlying cult of personality is ultimately dogmatically accepted and fandom becomes a trap when the fans fail to understand that a personalities’ attributes can be understandable, even relatable on a heart-felt level, whilst also not being justifiable. We are all flawed and it is totally okay to relate and reflect on the worst of our impulses and desires; what is imperative to that realization however, is one’s ability to grow and accept that our darker nature is just flawed and nothing to be worshipped, but to be plodded through.

right after King Geedora can out I read an article in Elements magazine. Doom took a two age lay out that a had DOOM letterhead. in this manifesto he spoke on his villainess actions. I saw at least 8 DOOM shows and it was him even when people were claiming it wasn't. I was a KMD fan so I'm up there in years, but he's more reminiscent of MCs from his era that lead the way and aren't concerned about the fans... Like EPMD said '"Your just a customer".

i remember in 2010 in my early 20s going to the Doom & Mos Def show here in Chicago and seeing an imposter Doom lip sync to, what sounded like, new recordings of his old songs made to sound live. It was a trip but i loved every second of it bc i totally understood the idea. Fair weather fans were booing hard and leaving the venue lol they just didnt get it.

Ehhhh....I don't think it's that you're not supposed to like Doom. If there's anyone to dislike I think it's Viktor Vaughn. Doom's character is more like a completely harmless villain who just really wants the world to know that he doesn't care. His whole persona is letting you know how much of a shit he doesn't give. His Vaughn persona on the other hand is all about murder, extortion and robbery. Also his last name is pronounced "Doom-uh-lay."

One problem I have is I've been a DOOM fan for a long time, and I've never gotten the sense that he's a well-defined character. The way he raps doesn't even sound any more villainous than half the other rappers out there. Besides, most of the people going to the shows aren't going to be super fans, they aren't going to understand the concept and they are being cheated out of their money for real. The villain might be a character, but the robbery is actually happening - all while his character isn't well defined. As I say, I'm a big fan but it doesn't mean I don't have qualms.

this was dope. Never thought of it like this. I always WANTED to check out Doom but found it hard as you stated for the same reason you stated. I look at artists in general DIFFERENT now. We always hear rappers aren't "REAL" but they really are just playing characters of themselves. That's why they don't use their government names. Unless they're living their truth through music, like Talib Kweli. Or even Kanye West.

I love how Eminem literally made Stan to kind of personify how doom is as an artist in that song.. and then 20 years later literally becomes a Stan to his own music. Anyway. He’s right. I lost all respect for em when he released recovery. And everything from that point on has just been... trash. Regardless. Hip Hop is bigger than just one MC. But not big enough for one MF. MF could have ruled the game above ground and he knew that. But I’m just happy we got what we got from a genius

I'm not sure people "like" him, but, just like most music, it's definitely made to connect to. although he doesn't care about the fans well-being, he definitely cares about the "listening experience". The basis of his persona is a character that's at odds with the rest of humanity. My theory is his sending imposters to shows is an excessive reference to that character sending "Doom-bots" to conduct villainy in his place. It is interesting to think about a relationship where a rapper, raps about him using his fans, but still, the fans relating to that and buying into it. And i think that's what's appealing. He's a villain, but his humour, and at some time self deprecation seems made to be related with. It's like he's saying "i'm a piece of shit, and i'm fucking you over, but we're both, but aren't you too, somewhere inside."

i kinda approached his music like this after understanding madvillainy, after that i took it with a grain of salt for the fact that we’ll probably never know the true person he is without the mask but that’s pretty much the point. all about about the music and this is why he’s loved / hated

One small thing that I haven't seen anyone point out so I don't know if you know it or not, but Viktor Vaughn and DOOM arent the same person. They actually have a beef lol. "Phony MCs use a stand in," is a shot at DOOM. Fancy Clown is a diss song aimed at DOOM too. DOOM is a complex artist your videos are really good on him

Everything that he does is apart of the art that he does, he does the things he does to add to the Mustiqueness of the character he portrays, what he’s doing is just apart of the art form, nothing crazy or threatening. It’s the art of the Character, then when he’s serious his passion shows in interviews when he breaks down the process on how he makes the music
