Found this which was an answer from David Hungate himself. "You're the one that I want" was a '62 precision with Rotosounds and a pick. I was probably using my Versatone amp as well as a direct box”.

This is such a good example of why learning parts to classic songs can be so beneficial to becoming a more complete musician. Some guys just want to "do their thing" and they're missing out on learning what makes a track work so well -- and in some cases why it become a hit. Not only does this song have that "fun as hell" catchy part, but it grooves really hard , yet never sounds forced. For that reason, there's a tendency to push and overplay it. You kept the relaxed nature while maintaining the drive. That's what makes it work so well.

I usually don't add anything extra...sometimes at the end, but I don't remember doing any ad-libbing on this one. Haha, I believe the eye-roll was in reaction to my brain telling me to do one (wrong) thing and my hands just doing their own (correct) thing...close call.

I found that I can still follow a few different scales on the bass. I'm 65 and starting over, but I'm not too old to learn. I'm retired and can put 6-8 hours as an easy practice. One of my favorite bass lines. I was in a bass forum where they were talking with someone who had personal insight into the recording of this song and he said it was definitely Hungate that played on this track. When I read the title of this one,I was like "Are You KIDDING ME? Has he LOST HIS MINE? " LOL. But every single time I've heard this song and listened to it,I never ONCE truly HEARD the actual "bass" line in it!!! Basically due to it sorta being drowned out in the mixing on the track and on the television/movie track of it as well. But listening to YOU play this one,WOW..........not only am I impressed with the bass-line,but it gives a whole new perspective to this song as well,because in all honesty,I never much cared for this tune,but NOW........I'm liking it!!! Seems like the biggest thing I see with bass players is playing wrong notes within a scale on a fast lick. Doesn't stand out to the layman but sounds like a dissonant to someone that recognizes it. You've always been spot on in not only playing the right notes, but the most important aspect to all of it..... Feel and timing. Incredible! Oh, and Happy upcoming Halloween! Those masks are coming in to a very appropriate time of year for them. :)
