I'm 71 and I'm going for it. I've done this stuff without pay just for fun for years. Linux in general, Kali Nethunter, wifi hacking and more. Now I'm levelling up my skills. 3/4 done with the Google Cert in a week, then planning to get Sec+, Blue Team Level 1, and a Splunk cert. That's my roadmap. Then going for a SOC role while I level up pentesting. Likely I'll aim for the TCM Pentesting cert and possibly OSCP. If I find that hands on isn't my thing, I can always bail into recruiting or sales. You can't control whether you'll get hired, but no one can stop you from learning and having fun. My motto is "Do your best, Keep learning, Have fun, and Believe in yourself."

I've been a software tester for the last 23 years and tested on multiple projects using a variety of technology platforms and for some time now I've felt the desire to transition to Cyber Security, as I'm really interested in this field and believe that it shouldn't be too difficult to transition. However, there's a lot of certs on offer, but not all have value and many lack practical training, which concerns me. At the moment I have signed up for the CompTia CCNA course and the Security + course to get a proper foundation. Once done with these, I'm considering doing the 'Security Blue Team' certification - level 1. It does concern me though that many people with experience are struggling to find work in this field (UK), as I don't want this to be wasted effort?? I'm 54.

Awesome and thank you for sharing! You're certainly off to a good start but I highly recommend grabbing my free eBook ( jongood.com/getstarted/ ), which includes a roadmap of skills and certifications that I recommend pursuing to make sure you have a solid foundation. The cybersecurity career field isn't just about technical or hands-on as deal a lot with theory and other things so both are absolutely important. There's many reasons why people with and without experience struggle to find employment in cybersecurity and one of the big reasons is that people try to rely purely on their technical skills/training, however landing jobs is about a lot more than that (i.e., resumes, interviewing, selling yourself, etc.). I recommend using Career Coaching on Cyber Training Pro ( www.cybertrainingpro.com/ ) for deep diving on the most effective and efficient strategy.

If you're looking to provide anything to the government, especially in security, then they won't touch you without a CISSP and it's usually in the contract. There are certainly other requirements to becoming part of their supply chain that I would look into also but the CISSP certainly makes sense.

I think it's _often_ the case that GenXers and older millennials have a somewhat broader understanding of tech than people in their teens and early 20s -- because youngsters have come up in a world of magic computing appliances, with "no user serviceable parts," so to speak. A lot of times they aren't very familiar with even the concept of hierarchical file structures, because iPads. Whereas people born in the 70s and 80s might have had to learn a little BASIC (usually from computer magazines) when they were kids to get their pirated games to run on their Commodore 64s. 🙂 Boomers invented the Internet. GenXers run a lot of the huge Silicon Valley companies. There's quite a bit of tech knowledge out there among middle-age (and even older) folks.
@JonGoodCyber
@JonGoodCyber Жыл бұрын
There are absolutely differences between all the generations but that's why knowledge share is important. Granted, a large chunk of older knowledge is going to be obsolete but we do continue to see some legacy items that seem to never go away.
@cacogenicist
@cacogenicist Жыл бұрын
@@JonGoodCyber - Hopefully -- and I know the youngsters agree with me -- *_knows how to fix the copy machine/printer_* becomes a worthless skill in the near future. 🙂Awful Rube Goldberg contraptions. I am willing to assert, though, that a higher percentage of 50-year-olds know their way around a 1.CLI than 18-year-olds -- not that that percentage is terribly high in either group. And I even think, in a task like **save a file from whatever desktop OS application to a specific, non-default directory -- open a cloud storage client, find directory, manually upload file** is daunting to quite a lot of teens. But this is probably mostly older folks' fault, for assuming that the kids are wizards at all tech things, and that they don't need explicit instruction on some of this stuff. 1. Probably not obsolete within IT fields any time soon

In theory yes it's possible to work remotely in Cyber Security but it depends on the company, industry, the country employing you, the country you're working in, and other factors. Not every situation will work for an offshore employee and you'll have to evaluate specific situations.

I always recommend following my free eBook's roadmap ( jongood.com/getstarted/ ) because that's what employers will expect. @JonGoodCyber

Since there is no research that I could find to quote, my educated guess based on the overall number of jobs would be either the United States or somewhere in Europe due to the amount of businesses and regulations compared to other parts of the world. Other established countries have Cyber Security needs but it's unlikely that the number of openings will be higher. With so many companies doing business worldwide, I'm not even necessarily sure that you would have to relocate to one of those countries to land some of the available jobs but you're going to need to do some research on the employment laws/requirements.

You should be learning about software security while you are studying to become a software engineer, which is an important aspect of Cyber Security. With that being said, there are many other areas where you won't get exposure because there just isn't overlap in those areas. As far as difficulty in learning Cyber Security, it will vary based on the individual but you should certainly be capable.

can I do 2 jobs together as a SOC analyst for two different region employer remote job?
@JonGoodCyber
@JonGoodCyber 2 жыл бұрын
You could potentially do it but I wouldn't for these reasons: 1. Some employers will have restrictions on additional employment 2. People burnout only working one SOC job...two would dramatically increase how fast that happens 3. If we're talking about two full time jobs, you would spend 16 hours (maybe closer to 20) per day working...that leaves little time for studying, resting, or literally anything else. All of this of course is dependent on even being eligible to work for a company due to your local employment laws and the laws of the two companies.

There are a lot of reasons for burnout depending on the situation but a common issue, especially at lower tier positions, is falling into the same thing day after day without any new challenges or opportunities to grow. We like to learn new things and that's why a lot of us get into this field.
