You’re UNDERRATING Austin Reaves…

Some of you watching this video right now 100% think that Austin Reaves is completely overrated as an NBA player. Why is he on team USA, why did he get a massive contract… he’d only be getting this kind of attention because he’s on the Lakers… you’re probably thinking all of those things!
And it makes sense I mean 2 years ago this guy went completely undrafted… and now after just a few seasons he is somehow this amazing player? How can a guy that was ranked outside of the top 70 on draft boards actually be this good this quickly?

Just watching these highlights you can see he's not "overrated." The amount of craft in his game is insane. He's fooling defenders with change of speed, change of direction, and all kinds of subtle fakes. Once he creates space, he can finish in all sorts of ways. He's also a very solid defender, imo. While the Lakers have made some mistakes in roster building over the years, they've actually done a fantastic job with drafting and player development. Yes, I know Reaves was undrafted. But the Lakers still had to recognize his value and sign him to a two-way contract. They also found and developed Caruso (though they weren't smart enough to actually pay him). And most of their higher picks have panned out too, even if they had to go to another team to truly blossom. I'm not a Lakers fan, btw. I just think their ability to find players through the draft, regardless of draft position, has been impressive.

Some fans(alot) talk like he’s the 2nd coming of the next big star in LA 😂.. and logical nba fans know their are role players with less press who are much better than AR and would shine in the same position if they were surrounded by LBJ/AD/D-LO..

It's because he's incredibly versatile and has no real weaknesses. He is solid/good on pretty much all aspects of the game. On top of that, he's a very willing learner with no ego and a hard worker. That is actually much harder to find than you'd think. Even if he doesn't get much better from here on out, you can at least guarantee that he'll be a great player to have on your team. Because of his versatility, there is always a role that he can fill on any team as long as your guard rotations aren't literally all all-stars or something.

Thank you for injecting some sense into this discussion, but even then, you’re underrating Reaves as a defender. He’s not a point of attack guy, but he *is* very good at contesting shots, particularly threes (opponents shot 32% on threes defended by Reaves [36% is the average] and less than the league average from other ranges as well). As a closeout guy or help defender, he’s above-average. And compared to other guys at his position, he’s not bad at all. High IQ guys play up on defense relative to the eye test, especially when they give effort like Reaves does. His fit next to Russel is a bit questionable, but that’s more on Russel than him.

I just don't understand why his mental makeup is never considered as a positive. Everyone screams "Mamba Mentality" and how they wish players like Lebron and others had more of an assassin mentality, yet when Reaves has shown that capability no one gives him credit. I don't appreciate that you put a cap on his playmaking ability because of his limited athleticism and then not acknowledge that to be a playmaker you need to have elite levels of IQ, timing, spacing, and the flow of the game. All of which Reaves has shown and is just as significant as athleticism in playmaking for yourself and others. Did you feel Rondo put a limitation on the Celtics offence during their Championship era? how bout cp3 who barely could graze the rim when he came out? and Kyrie with all his athleticism has been a liability on defense from day one. Athleticism isn't always an indicator of a player being able to stay in front of people. I know the video is about giving Austin a bit more credit but you also emphasized his limitations as the reason he might not be as good, or his age being the reason that he's peaked, but he also hasn't played much basketball because of early injuries/red shirting and limited playing time. Anyways besides that I loved your video keep em coming!
@user-vb3xv7oj4p
@user-vb3xv7oj4p Жыл бұрын
Much appreicated for the love on him. Good analysis overall. However, I argue that his physical deficiency on defensive end is way too exaggerated imho. Despite the fact that he can be over powered / bullied by stronger guards/wings and get blown by quicker/smaller guards time to time, his defensive contribution through motor/hustle/awareness/anticipation outweight his shortcoming. He make up his average foot speed by reacting half second early through his excellent awareness and reflexes. Not a good defender against iso craftman and/or highest level of ball handlers but I feel very comfortable to put him against off-ball guy/smallish wing type. So, he isn't the defensive stopper by any means, but his defensive contribution largely comes from team defense anyways.

Lakers homer, so fair warning, but I totally agree. I think it's really possible with his work ethic/pathway development as a player that we could see Reaves become an even better athlete and defender by putting in work on his body. In terms of modern player comparisons, my mind always goes to Bojan Bogdanovic. Both crafty, versatile, efficient players with high IQ and slightly below average athleticism -- but every team would want them on their team in a heartbeat. Can't wait to see how he develops from here on out :)

That makes no sense Austin Reaves' on Team USA because he's the third best player on the Lakers? Team USA could choose 20+ shooting guards better than him.

These comments proves he’s overrated 😂. Y’all acting like he’s the best player on the team after just a half season of great play. Let’s be real, he’s a white nba player that’s good and plays with the Lakers. He’s a good role player but not someone that can carry a championship team. I can name at least 10 guards better than him in the west alone

@@YeYe-ni7qy -- I would still have him as a #3. Prime Curry and Reaves? nah. MJ and Reaves? Nah. OKC KD and Reaves? Nah. MVP Harden and Reaves? nope. KG and Reaves? Nope. Now 2 stars and Reaves? Yeah, I'll take that. $12-15M/yr is cheap today. He's easily worth $25M/yr in 2023.

Bruh if you play next to LeBron and AD you better average 13 points a game......he is definitely over rated. of course we will see if he can do it 2 years in a row, especially when you know AD and LeBron will be injured for half the season so he will be the main option. i guarantee he will not avg over 17 on good efficiency. he will prob be traded at the deadline.
