Beautiful video Tom, crispy as always. I’m a 7.4 handicap, not the fastest swing speed by any means, I recently bought a set of irons with Dynamic gold R300’s instead of what I had been playing, S300’s. Unbelievable difference, like you said, it just feels much easier. I know for sure that so many players use stiff and certainly shouldn’t like myself. Also the balls people play are way too high of compression. Everyone wants a tour ball but without the right swing speed it’s hitting their distance.

You've hit the nail on the head - the desire to mimic tour players' clubs, shafts, balls, etc. is widespread in the amateur ranks, and these equipment choices have relegated countless golfers to the ranks of endless frustration from which there is no escaping until - or if - they finally wise up, put their egos aside, and get properly fitted. Thanks for sharing your experience, and enjoy those new shafts! Tom Saguto, PGA

Tom. You are so right about finding the correct shaft. I was looking for new irons and my local Ping fitter let me take a 7 iron out to the course with different weight shafts. I would play the holes just hitting 7 irons, switching out shafts every 6 holes or so. That enabled me to find the weight and manufacturer that worked the best for me. Keep up the good work Tom or should I say Doctor Strange.😂

Issue is, who does one trust for fitting. What does one look for in a qualified fitter? Even our couple of national chain golf stores here go thru employees like a revolving door. For an example, I got fitted for a PXG driver with a senior shaft 2 years ago from a PXG certified fitter. This year the shaft snapped at the hozzel. Went to a different store/fitter. I consistently gained 5-10 yds plus more down the middle drives with the new shaft. So it makes hard to spend a couple Gs on new irons with fitted shafts

I went through the same realization this past year. My previous irons had Dynamic Gold S300 (130g) shafts. Last year I bought the Takomo 201 irons with KBS Tour 120 stiff shafts. Instantly I could feel the shaft load and unload so much more effortlessly. Three years ago I "upgraded" my driver shaft to a Ventus Black 6 X (low spin, low launch, x stiff) and struggled getting the launch and carry I wanted. The ball just wouldn't stay in the air. I just got a Titleist GT2 with the Tensei 1k Blue shaft (mid spin, mid launch, stiff) and, again, the launch, carry, and distance I've been looking for are sooo much easier to find because the shaft is doing the work for me.

@@SagutoGolf I viewed the True Spec link you shared Tom. You certainly had better dispersion and ball speed with irons other than what you were using. What was the outcome? Did you end up with different irons, just iron shafts, a new driver head and shaft another 3 wood? This video conveys the point that a lighter, perhaps less stiff shaft would allow folks to get more "slingshot effect" or whoosh thru impact. Did you end up with lighter shafts, etc. Funny -- He had PXG lined-up last yet you're currently using a PXG head.

Great lesson for correct shafts. it seems he's using a consistent medium tempo back swing. i've been working on this and wondering if slowing the back swing down is recommended when learning this. Keep up the awesome videos, and thank you!
@SagutoGolf6 күн бұрын
I appreciate your kind words, Karl, and I'm glad to know that this lesson resonated with you! With regard to what you are working on, there are two things at play here: 1) Discovering and dialing in our ideal swing rhythm, and 2) Feeling that transition - or the change in direction - so we don't rush our downswing from the top and thereby lose our sequencing (a very common affliction in the amateur golf realm). Our perfect tempo - which is unique to each of us individually, enables us to gather and unload the various components in proper order for seemingly effortless, powerful ball striking bliss. Slowing things down to find and ingrain our ideal swing pace is an excellent way to accomplish that. This does not mean that we're going to be slow through the zone. Think in terms of Els, Couples, Morikawa, Matsuyama, Cam Young, for example. Keep up the great work!! Tom Saguto, PGA

I'll put it this way: A correctly fitted shaft makes all the difference. You want the shaft to properly respond to your swing, instead of trying to fit your swing to a poorly matched shaft. These setup keys should aid in your understanding: We should feel evenly balanced between heel and toe in both feet. This balance is achieved by first setting our knees over the toes (or at least over the toe end of our shoelaces) to activate the ground connection, and then pushing our butt out to incline the hips and chest so that a relationship with the ball is established. The arms hang down naturally from the shoulders with all clubs except the driver, for which we push them out an inch or so to encourage more of the around-the-body motion needed for that lengthy shaft. We address the ball stacked shoulders over hips over knees with our weight balanced 50/50. We then simply bump our hips one inch towards the target while keeping everything else in place. This presets a little more weight forward - generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs - while retaining the stacked relationship. Both feet are flared outward approximately 10-20 degrees, with the knees similarly angled outward. This orientation facilitates a stress-free, flowing motion back and through, resulting in a very body-friendly, consistent, powerful swing. While there is certainly content on my channel that addresses this topic, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lessons and drills, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom

Hi Tom. I'm 66 years old and lost distance due to some lower back issues. I've been struggling trying to transition from my old, forged irons with heavy stiff shafts to lighter more flexible shafts. I never really liked lighter clubs as I tend to swing too fast and lose a lot of control without gaining much distance. My ball striking is so much better with heavier clubs but I'm not getting the pop off the clubface. My 7-iron flies 145 yds. compared to 160 prior to my back problems. My back will never again be a 100%. I think a reg flex could help me, but they tend to be lighter. Any suggestions? Great video as always, Thanks!

Yes, I remember picking up VJ Sing's 1 iron when he was just starting out; and, the shaft felt like a lump of lead. Couldn't feel the clubhead at all. Players then were obsessed with stiff shafts. And, of course they were steel shafts back then. But, I have been giving a lot more thought about the folding of the right arm. And, how we fold the right arm may be crucial with regard to the position of the left wrist at the top of the backswing. And, it may be that we won't have to work quite as hard in the swing if we fold the right arm by rotating the elbow towards the body, in the first half of the backswing. This may help to ensure that the right elbow is pointing down at the top of the backswing; and, that the left wrist isn't bowed at the top
@SagutoGolf5 күн бұрын
Yes, and unfortunately egos still rule the day today with regard to golfers playing shafts that are far to stiff for them. And with regard to that trail arm/elbow action, if we properly establish and retain that critical connection point between the upper arm and pec/ribcage area, then the proper retraction of that arm will be facilitated without any contrived action. It is certainly something we can preset for success when constructing our ball striking machine! Thanks, Tom

@@SagutoGolf Yes, that would be the preferred method; but, unfortunately, for myself, I am physically incapable of pressing the upper part of my right arm against my right side at address; just as, I am, also, unable to think about trying to rotate my right elbow in towards my body, notwithstanding the fact that I place my right hand on the club from under the shaft. But, I have at least been able to work on rotating my elbow in towards my right side when I do my version of the drinks tray drill, in which I position my elbow in front of my hand at address. And, I have been amazed at how freely I am able to swing my arm back; and, how deep I can get at the top, when I do the drill. And, since I have started to do this exercise the upper part of my right arm connects perfectly against my side at the top of my backswing, in my actual swing. And, my right arm doesn't get stuck in my backswing, like it used to. But, the, "Mandala Move", as I call it, is not my idea. I noticed it in some of the women golfers. One great example of this would be up coming amateur: Amelia Harris.

I have stiffs only in pw, gw, sw and lw. Also in woods I have regular flex (driver speed 98 to 102). People should use way more light and flexible shafts. I would probably play with a light steel shaft (85 gr) but arthritis is so bad in both elbow and shoulders, that I sacrifice a slight feel loss.

Considering your arthritis issues, Peter, I'd say your swing speed numbers are pretty darn good. And to your point, far too many folks go stiff to fit their egos rather than their swings, and ironically this choice is to the ultimate frustration and suffering of said egos... By the way - and perhaps I already mentioned this previously - you may be interested to know that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. For example, the outward flaring of both feet 10-20 degrees in our setup facilitates the proper amount of body-friendly, free-flowing hip turn back and through. This is a major power source, and it also keeps the club traveling on the correct path. If you were to square your feet so that they were perpendicular to the target line, then your hips would be impeded from turning sufficiently in the backswing (which would then inhibit the shoulders from executing a full and effortless turn), and from releasing properly in the downswing to propel the club through the zone. Restricting this action can cause a variety of path issues and/or also place strain on the lower back, lead knee, and the hip joints as the hips will "want" to move laterally and turn through into the finish but will be fighting the body in the process. @@SagutoGolf Thnks for the answer, might give it a try. I am 66y already and after 15 years playing badminton on national top level and sport climbing / bouldering 30 years as a serious hobby, my right shoulder and elbow are done and dusted 🤣. Now want to focus on golf, as climbing is too hard for my upper body.

I found both of you have a much shallower backswing than your downswing. Your behind waist take-away seems to be compensated by the steeper downswing trajectory, otherwise the club could possibly get stuck. I wonder how you get to control that and if you can elaborate a bit more. Thanks!
@SagutoGolf6 күн бұрын
That is not actually the case, and we must be keenly aware when watching golf swing videos of how much the camera angle can skew our perspective and thus cause us to unnecessarily dive down rabbit holes that in reality do not exist. The swing is a tilted circle (or arc, if we wish to get technical), the circumference of which extends from the ball to above and behind our shoulders. As such, if we are going to remain on that circle/arc it requires the hands and club to take a slightly inward path - not a disconnected handsy snatch or roll to the inside - just a natural tracing of the outer rim or circumference. The feeling of "straight back" can easily pull the golfer off of that preestablished geometry right from the start, and from there precise compensatory actions are necessary if there is any hope of returning the clubface to the ball on the proper path time after time. So rather than have to rely on "dropping it in the slot" the exact amount each and every swing, why not just put in the slot from the start and just keep it there?! We create depth in this swing, and that enables us to fully engage the shoulders and harness the tremendous power of swinging on an inclined arc courtesy of the seemingly effortless force known as "angular momentum" - where physics and geometry collide. Watch any Tour event on TV and you'll see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top. And while I certainly have several videos that address this topic, a more structured option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Keys You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ Featuring 17 videos and 45 minutes of detailed lesson and drill content, this is a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the formal learning method that has countless thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - now enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom Saguto, PGA

Yes sir, So it is true that I have struggled with a steep downswing and hands-involved backswing over time. My old habits have always been using my arms too much which built a very steep downswing for me, with a lot of early extension and poor use of the hips/not turning and clearing properly. In essence, for me, it is a shallower swing than what I've been used to doing for so many years (a.k.a. doing it the wrong way), but the steep angle on the way down is basically the beast I've been working on taking down, with the help of Tom. A lot of what we've worked on recently is mentioned in that precious video, the lesson on arm structure and takeaway. Hope that helps. -Derek N.

Wouldn’t stiff shaft cut down on variables?
@SagutoGolf3 күн бұрын
It most definitely will not if the shaft isn't a good match for the golfer. A correctly fitted shaft makes all the difference. You want the shaft to respond to your swing - which helps you to eliminate variables - instead of trying to fit your swing to a poorly matched shaft -particularly one that is too stiff - and thereby introducing a new set of variables! @scottkintzing25147 күн бұрын
@ good to know as I’m considering new clubs or maybe just new shafts if appropriate. I like the 925 Mizunos but the 7 iron is 28 degrees, that isn’t a 7 iron. 30 is a bit strong but I’d say more reasonable than 28 . Or does it really matter/ your thoughts on loft?
@SagutoGolf7 күн бұрын
Personal preference, Scott. My chief concern in this regard is that the gapping between clubs is appropriate so that you have a consistent average yardage differential from one club to the next. TS

Far too many in the amateur golf ranks are in the same boat, whether they know it or not. Kudos to you for recognizing this as a correctly fitted shaft does indeed make all the difference. I believe the swing speed, but the distance seems really exaggerated. On a Golfzon simulator I can get my 7 iron over 100 MPH but it maaaaybe goes over 200 yards with solid smash factor.
@SagutoGolf6 күн бұрын
I don't program the calculations being run by the Flightscope Mevo+, Steve, but there are other factors including the loft of the club (Derek's 7 iron is 30 degrees), the shaft dynamics, the head, the path, etc. Anyway, if you're getting your 7 iron up to 100+, then that's awesome and keep up the great work! Tom
@jumanji11096 күн бұрын
It depends on the loft and technology. A Ping G 7 iron at 29 degrees and all the tech would go 220+ easy with 100mph swing speed… if you compress it hands forward. If you are hitting a 33-35 degree classic 7 iron, blade type, and you swing fast but manipulate the wrists to close the club face, adding dynamic loft… you might not go 180 at 100mph. I hit a Ping G 7 iron, day in and day out 190-195 carry, easy swing at 90-91mph, but I compress. And, less than 5’ rollout on New England greens. Too many variables, and the biggest being compression vs manipulation. Can swing both very fast and the compressed shot will go 10-12% further.

Okay 30 degrees jacked game improvement makes more sense. He’s early extending too. ain’t no way he’s hitting a trad 7 iron 200 plus carry with that swing…I don’t care what shaft he has lol. I use 681 Titleist blades ( 36 degree 7 iron with x100’s) and cover the ball fully with compression, carrying 190 max.

Ah, but here's the thing: A significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. Have you looked into the comprehensive, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? As a 50 year old man with herniated discs, I gave up golf for awhile because it hurt too much. I couldn’t even get 50 swings in a range session. Then a few years ago I picked up my old sand wedge and started using the free practice green near my house to chip and screw around and basically just get some fresh air. But then believe it or not, my physical therapist told me about the Tom Saguto “stack and tilt”, or “single plane” or preset everything at address or whatever you want to call it. I subscribed to your golf school and long story short, my 9 iron is now my 150 club and I’m consistently getting 175 with my 7 iron with a beautiful baby draw. I recently picked up a senior flex shaft on a driver and even though my swing speed is a little over 100 mph with the driver, the senior flex was easier to hit and I was getting more distance at the same speed. I will be getting that shaft as soon as I can afford it!

@SagutoGolf Dale Earnhardt would have gone with lighter . A big reason you stiffen is for feel . The faster you swing you can lose feel, stiffer usually gave the feel back especially with steel but that equated usually to weight . Now with the new and progressing technology with composite shafts they are able to go lighter and stiffer now .
