Dear Ben, a great video again! And you are absolutely right! Robotized manuals are just a matter of attitude and willingness. I you are willing to put the car in manual (never in automatic!) , maybe also in sport, find the rythm with lifting your foot. pull the gear paddle and reengage the throttel at the right moment, these cars shift perfectly fine and are a lot of fun to drive. In the beginning I hatet this system too, but now I have changed my mind. My conclusion: If you want it to work, it will work just fine. After several years of driving I now enjoy every single gear shift! 😄

Maseratis are such great sounding cars aswell as the granturismo being a great tourer. Our family adore them, we've gone from a cambia cross in 2002to a quattroporte in 2007 (sadly we had to get rid of it due to multiple issues for a much more reliable Audi Q7 s line) and now we also have a granturismo which we use once a week, I agree completely that the sensation of being able to change a gear yourself is so much better when driving.

Great video. Have owned both versions of the GranTurismo. The ZF and the MC shift robotised manual: also the 360 spider f1 robotised manual. The ZF is better as a daily. But the engagement and theatre of the robotised manual is unbeatable. Absolutely no problems parking with one. The biggest issue imo is the cost of replacing the clutch. Around 7000 pounds here in Australia. Not everyone has that sort of war chest for servicing ( or wants to spend that on upkeep). No regrets here though. You really need to love the sound, style and theatre of these cars to buy in. Otherwise be done with it and drive a Kia lol

I tracked a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ and a 911 GT3 RS back-to-back at Rockingham Speedway and honestly, the visceral feeling of the SVJ’s robotised manual, kicking me up the backside and whacking my head into the headrest, every time I shifted under hard acceleration was a joy to behold. In comparison the GT3 RS shifts, as smooth and clinical as they were, felt sedated and devoid of drama. Stepping out both cars, my pulse was WAY higher after the SVJ than it was after the GT3 RS…and that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?

Amen, brother! Fantastic video, Ben, and about time somebody went on record and told the truth about these transmissions. Every, single, bloody person has something bad to say about them but here’s the thing - THEY HAVE NEVER DRIVEN ONE, OR IF THEY HAVE, IT WAS FOR 15 MINUTES!! Once you get to know how they shift, they are an absolute delight to drive. I wouldn’t swap my GranSport for a manual…ever! I love the gearbox…there is that mechanical feeling where you can actually feel the clutch engaging and the gearbox going into the next gear and the speed of the shifts is absolutely fine. Oh and the downshifts….sweet baby Jesus….the downshifts are sublime. Sure, it’s not like a DCT with their super quick shifts, but they lack all feeling…it’s almost like playing a computer game…you don’t feel anything mechanical at all. Here’s my prediction - In this modern era of twin clutch gearboxes devoid of any mechanical feeling and EV’s, people that love driving but don’t want to deal with that third pedal will turn to these types of cars. They offer terrific engagement and that mechanical feel and will be the link between the generation that doesn’t know how to drive a manual but still want to drive something mechanical and visceral. These cars will have their time in the sun, and are screaming bargains at the moment. Just drive one for more than 15 minutes and get to know them!

Great report, Ben. I am one of those mad people who use their 612 Ferrari as a daily drive. It’s a thoroughly engaging, mechanical ride, as you correctly said. Yes, the gear changes are not as smooth in the lower gears, but you get used to lifting off the throttle very quickly. Hill starts are trickier, because the car will roll back before the clutch bites; and the handbrake is ornamental. So, you just use your foot brake instead. I wondered about a manual conversion, but they are 30 grand and the only one that was for sale recently which had been converted (as featured on Jayemm) was not selling for the same inflated price as factory-fitted manuals. And a DCT only serves to dumb down the whole mechanical experience of these cars. As electrical cars proliferate and rob us of the visceral experience the best manual cars afford us, we should celebrate the latter for as long as we can afford to keep them on the road!

When properly set up and maintained these boxes are a delight to use. You have to think about them though. Anyone who approaches SMG/CC/F1/E-gear etc thinking it would be a ZF8 needs to have a word with themselves 😂 Brilliant video! Like how the passion comes through. The downshift alone in my Maserati 4200 with larini exhaust is enough of a reason to have the cambriocorsa gearbox! You just drive it as a manual anyway, you can skip gears if you wish, but i never lift when changing gear, even Maserati state in the handbook not to do this, and also on their own driving video (on my channel). On a clear dry warm day, in auto, kickdown is something else, the only time mine is ever put in auto. Only one thing to avoid, never reverse up a steep hill.

I couldn’t agree more - I have Larini decats, stock GranSport X pipe (no resonator) and Tubi rear mufflers…the sound is glorious. I never lift off the throttle when shifting, and, I always shift at or above 4,000 RPM. Here’s the problem, a GranSport is aimed at a particular fan of cars…a lot of people buy them…and get pissed off at the car after a month because they 1. Can’t drive it right. 2. They can’t afford the repairs 3. They will simply drive it to look cool, not perform any maintenance then bitch that the car sucks. As I’ve always said….buy a German car if you want perfection. Maserati’s single clutch is finicky, outdated, slow/fast (just need to know how to drive it) and glorious at the same time. One last note - you can and should pull both paddles back when coming to a stop to avoid wear and tear on the clutch if you want….I do both…depends on my mood. Attention BMW/Meecedes/Audi/Porsche drivers…these cars are not perfect, don’t buy a Maserati if you are going to bitch about all the Italian quirks….buy it because you can actually feel what is going on with the car, steering, handling and engine wise. No flat screens, automated engine sounds or fancy suspension bullshit here…just a car that has pedigree, performance and class.

I have owned a robotised manual for the last 9 years, the e63 M6. I agree, you need to learn to drive it! I am lucky that I have a DCT car (M4) and a PDK (991) and an 8 speed auto (Panamera) and a brace of manuals. Another reason to add is….variety! It’s a different experience to all the others. In its hardest shift mode the M6 is really mechanical and brutal, in a reassuring way. A real drama as it bangs in the gears, the DCT and PDK are very clinical and that kind of takes something from the experience too, excellent, yes, but not as quirky.

Hi Ben, nice comparsion. When I was up to buy a Granturismo, I as everybody read from the internet that the only good is the ZF and that was my direction, but as time went.....I looked on youtube and actually there was something wild about the MC shift. And I switched my mind and now live Robotized and every moment with the car I enjoy the mechanical imperfection of each shift. As you pointed out when you change by your own, you can drive it smooth. But actually, even if I drive it slow in the city, I always really always no exception downshift to first... it's harsh....and I love it 😂 . Big bang on the full blast upshit again sensational. Little oscillation after upshift in mid load....wow this is something the old F1 cars did, and here it is present but still quite calm drive within the road limits. I have a similar performing car with a manual, and I like it, but no way to match the noise related to up and down shifting of the robot. I own as well 2 cars with 8 speed torque converters. But all of these when driving in the free city, in the serpentines, the robot wins. There is no need to drive it hard to get race inspired emotions and thats the biggest point. The only downside is the traffic jam...its usable, but your wallet cries. BTW all 3 have simillar box, the GTS has latest sofast4 that has double hydraulic pressure in the shift circuit and direct wire to the ECU to cut off the ignition in upshift. So that's why it's the snapiest.

Brilliant video. I have had so many arguments with utter melons who have never even driven a DCT or decent ZF torque converter, and yet all you hear is the same old myth bs. They will go one & on about driving involvement, and how real drivers drive manuals, and how you can be more precise because you can choose exactly when to change blah blah. When I politely say 'the ONLY thing you can not do in an auto is heel and toe' then also point out that less than 0.01% of drivers on the road will EVER heel and toe, and even then, a modern auto has auto-blip and does this for you anyway lol !!! My last car was a tuned BMW M140i with a ZF8, and had xHP3 software, which made it even quicker when changing gear. Around town it was so smooth you could not tell it was even changing gear, yet when on a trackday, it was MUCH faster than a manual, and allowed me to concentrate on the other aspects of driving, like steering. My current car is an OG M2, with a DCT. Yes it's a little bit jerky around town, but it's not bad. On a track, it is incredible. I wouldn't go back to a manual now, especially as I love BMW's and their manual gearboxes I have owned in the past, have always felt notchy and rubbery, and not enjoyable to use. A DCT or ZF has all the advantages of a manual, changing gear exactly when you want to, revving the engine out if you wish, yet has none of the disadvantages, you literally get the best of both worlds.

fact is, if you buy a car as a weekend car and in the ownership of the car, lets say 2 to 5 years only plan to put like 5000 miles max on the car, many things can be argued in favor of a automated manual. but if you plan on actually using the car like 10.000 + miles and even do some city here and there, or keep it for life, automated manual, are rubbish, and most of all unreliable long term, this is a fact that was true when this cars were new, now almost 20 years latter they didn't get any better. so as a youtuber, all true how you feel. Currently owning a QP V with a robotised manual, I have to say that nothing compares with the experience of the gearbox. The engine is awesome but I think it’s the combination of them both that makes the car so fun. Changing gear in full throttle has to be experienced, so mechanical and raw! I wouldn’t change it for a manual or dct. Never driven one, but when you see the head bashing up shift of an aventador, you get pumped up. It looks so involving and brutal. Who cares if a dct is faster, cars are for engagement and emotion. I am pretty sure the new revuelto won’t have this type of charisma. Anyway, I don’t mind the bad reviews of cars with robotised manuals, keeps them affordable for us few who actually enjoy them 😂

Over the past 6 years I've experienced many supercars, from 360 to 992 GT3. But the best experience to me was a ride in my friend's Scuderia Spider 16M. He was not pushing hard, his car is still being run-in after recommissioning, but that F1 gearbox is a proper animal. The full-bore upshift is brutal and rapid, and the downshift is always accompanied with the angry blip of that V8 it's so unreal. I used to admire the Scuderia, but now I love it simply because of its F1 gearbox. The new F8 does not do that.

I think Ben nails the most important thing: would you rather have that dream car with a gearbox that requires work to use, or just drive boring boxes forever? I think there is an element of blind “Clarkson said it so it must be true”, when the truth is the robotised manual is just a quirky gearbox. As you say; learn how to use it properly and they’re perfectly fine, and WAY more fun than a ZF slush-box (I say that as someone who owns a ZF-equipped car!) Plus quirky is characterful, and characterful in a car is a great thing. Also, the more I see that grey 612, the more I like the colour, it does suit the car quite well.

I think the main worry for most people is the cost of replacing the clutch specially in a Ferrari or Maserati, they don't tend to last very long (depending on the way the car gets driven) and are very expensive. But people forget these cars are rarely used as daily drivers and are not driven as much as a VW Golf so the clutch lasts much longer and it costs not that much per year.

The trouble with cars that depreciate like an early Quattroporte is that it often falls into the wrong hands and they're not being serviced properly and you might have some concerns about the gearbox condition. Sounds like a big and expensive job to fix as it's a transaxle setup if I'm not mistaken.

Nice video, I would like to chime in with my experiences with a manual 360, an F430 F1, a Granturismo 4.7 ZF and MC shift: I own the F430 F1, which is suposedly one of the better F1 systems due to the fact that it's the latest version. Driving sporty it is epic, driving on low speeds it's okay. Do I prefer the manual shift of the 360 I drove had? Without any doubt, gated 6 is king. When put the F430 automatic mode, it drives like someone on their second driving lesson is operating the clutch. I expected the same from the Maserati Granturismo MC Shift, however to my surprise the auto function on this car works fine! I much prefer the visceral MC shifts for sporty driving, and acceptable automatic mode, in comparison to the ZF transmission. The ZF car just felt like a luxury saloon instead of a sports car which made it very uneventful. The MC Shift is the perfect gearbox for that car.

I don’t think people are avoiding them because lord clarkson said he’s not fond. People avoid them because of the worries about costs of running them now that they’re 20 years old. I buy cars that are around this sort of age and my rule is manual only, NA only, petrol only (no EGR or DPF) and it’s nothing to do with it being more fun - it’s to do with avoiding the things that break and cost a lot. Ed Bolian addresses the differences between a new supercar owner and used car owner too and explains why those buying new opt for autos and used buyers opt for manuals. They’re not the same buyer with the same requirements. Are these gear boxes fine? Yes. Would I buy a car with one? No.
@user-ve4qq7bo4x

The argument for these gearboxes is always the same: you have to learn to use them. The counter argument is that the whole point of having an automatic is that you don't have to worry about it, if you have to learn to use it and adjust your driving to it it's a bad automatic and might as well get a manual.

But have to agree with Clarkson in the Alfas case, it was bad at town speeds and terrible at all speeds in the fully auto mode.

I admit that the idea of saving lots of money on a classic is appealing. But I have two concerns, both of which you mentioned in passing. First, parallel parking a robotized manual has to be a challenge. Top Gear made a segment were they hilariously failed at this. Second, robotized manuals have a reputation for running through clutches rapidly--in some cases as quicly as 30,000 miles. On a Ferrari, this is not an inexpensive service. Switching to slower shifts helps, but does not eliminate this issue. And, in stop and go traffic or around town they can be a bit difficult, even when manually shifting. So I wouldn't rule one out, but I'd definitely consider the drawbacks if I was to purchase one.

Let me reassure you about the parallel parking. It is as easy as with any other gearbox. I’ve owned my 4200 for 8 years now, it’s my daily driver around town and I park it in the street, car parks etc. without a second thought. I guess if you put someone who had only ever driven a Tesla in a car with a clutch, they would struggle with parallel parking as well. To be honest it’s so straightforward forward that I can’t work out what people find so difficult about it.

Have owned 2 Vantages with sports shift (V8S and V12S), have come to enjoy them, just need to drive them in sports mode and do slight roll off over gear changes down and NEVER use them as an auto. It is so close in driving to my old manual vantage, but changes are quicker than a human can deliver. Agree drive them as a manual that just does the actual shift.

I had an M3 with one of these. It was impossible to drive around town and had so many faults that BMW agreed to replace it for a new V8 540i. That also turned out to be very unreliable.

Just a correction on the pronunciation of Scaglietti. It's Sca-le-etti, not Scag-lee-etti. The combination of g+l in Italian makes a sound like 'L' in English, just the tongue touches the roof of your mouth. Great video!!

As the Maserati gearbox is the same as the F1 could the system be removed as it can in Ferraris of similar vintage? A manual grand sport could be fun!

The problem with the cambiocorso is when you have to troubleshoot and service the goddamn thing. Its an absolute pain in the ass and will only worsen as they age. The failure points are so numerous it will make your head spin.

I find it really funny how people are so against automatics in cars as if their daily drive back to their commuter village is in some way better with a manual and that it would turn them into a rally driver if they had a manual.

Consodering your statement a joke about the German Cars, honestly, i guess the bmw e46m3 and e60m5 did their own bad to the Robotized Gearbox Sympathy...and my honest opinion is that marleting did a lot of bad work with the "automode"...because back then this mode was often enough sold as the same characteristics as a tc box. The next big problem is that those cars were often enough buyed by petrolheads who mainly drove them on the townareas...and in my mind those boxes are countryside/racetrack boxes...but buying a lame e39m5 for a roadtrip btw is still a great option if youd buy otherwise a ferrari ..saying that, if you really have that money, why not considering an 8hp swap with turbolamik or cantcu? Those became extremely popular and youll make the best out of both worlds, probably even without any need to change anything from the interior ...

I think these are a victim of the times. Brought out in early 2000 when we all loved watching btcc and f1. Ferrari even calling there’s f1. Meant that lots of people assumed they were some sort of fully sequential race box!!! Meaning not lifting, getting the jerky gear change and destroying a clutch!! Bad education was there downfall really

what’s the point? Just repeating the F1 transmission is „good“ or „engaging“ isn’t helpful, you should rather explain why… I do have a Scaglietti and I know exactly why I love the F1 paddles.

From 2027 onwards, driving a combustion engine will no longer be permitted outside of work and delivery journeys. The Federal Transport Tourism Emission Restriction Ordinance TEBBVO was also announced....is intended to remove all combustion engines commercial vehicles, construction machinery, agricultural machinery and even inland waterway vessels from the roads/waterways by 2035. Buses in cities (and all taxis) must be completely converted to electric drive by 2026 (EU regulation!)! That will be funny! Have you ever read Berlin leaks? It takes your shoes off! They're basically planning to demobilize under the guise of a campaign against "fun using fossil drive energy" in road traffic... the SOKO Autoposer is supposed to hunt down all fun fossil drivers in the future! This will be a STVO Stasi with BABVVO monitoring apps as a helper for controlling exhaust gas emissions.
