When people roast my favourite books I immediately question my whole opinion and if I’m wrong; my brain’s never like okay that’s their opinion and that’s fine, my brain’s like oh my god am I stupid am I wrong, is this book actually bad?? So yeah … I can totally work with that

I loved the Little Prince and I can understand why people might not like it. But every time I read it, it feels like it heals a part of me. Also, I completely agree with the fact that you cannot expect children to not act like children. I don't know if I would enjoy rereading percy jackson from the beginning but when I read it, I felt like I grew up along side them at that may be my favourite part.

I always try my best to not get offended when people don’t like my favorite books. I think nostalgia and emotional attachments to the stories make it feel like a personal attack on me. But then I have to remind myself that it’s not an attack on me but the back of my head goes like: is this actually a good book or are my memories overshadowing how bad it is?

I definitely agree with you on middle grade fiction, even when's there is a hint of a romance happening, it doesn't overtake the plot and more often times the groundwork is a Friendship between characters. The characters in Percy Jackson and Harry Potter for instance didn't fall in love upon first meeting, as they and we grew with them with every book, their relationships matured until fourth or fifth books. Yes the first few books were categorized as "juvenile" in their humor, but like you said they have heart, hilarious dialogue (Remember Dam fries) and often Very mature themes and poignant moments between characters.

I just turned 18, I've been reading books since I was 7yo and I find myself dreading getting criticism on my fav books because what if they're bad literature and I only like them because I read them when I was a kid and have good memories of them? So I do this thing where I seperate my favs in two categories: the ones I love mostly because I had a good time and the ones that I also think of as great literature
@julieelayne

Miss Peregrine is truly one of the worst things I have read in my life. The characters were beyond annoying , whiny and self absorbed. The plot was just atrocious and the writing was self indulgent and dull. Also felt like pictures were included as a lazy way to world build I hate to be so negative about a book but it is one of a handful of books that have no redeeming qualities in my opinion, We Were Liars is one Eleanor Olyphant are also on the list

Re: Percy Jackson is too childish. Nah, I get this take though. You followed up by saying there's something wholesome and fun about middle grade fiction. I get that. I love middle grade. But the original Percy Jackson series is like.... bad. Riordan's later books in the same universe are much better, and I think the first six books just suffered from "I've never written a book for kids before" syndrome.

I know so many people who’ve started reading the lightning thief and put it down cause they thought it was too childish. But the thing with the Percy Jackson series is that, yes they start out really young, but then you follow along as they grow up. Which you don’t always get with series like that. Also let’s give Rick Riordan some props for bringing the hype around Greek mythology
@little.prince
@little.prince Жыл бұрын
Percy Jackson overappropriates and overamerucanises Greek culture so much that it’s hard for Greek people to read and everyone completely brushes it off, and it has never been addressed by RR. The twists on the myths? Fantastic. The characters? Loveable. The writing? Very dry but it checks out for the age range. The misuse of Greek language, and or places, or the entire thing about the Olympus moving and somehow coming to America “because the flame burnt brightest”? Yeah, no. That’s some peak bs. I talked to my friends about the Kane Chronicles as well and they said it really misrepresented their culture in similar ways, so I just stopped reading. A little research on the thing you wanna write about shouldn’t be optional, but obligatory.

If someone says "I didn't vibe with this and that. This book just wasn't for me" I'm chill. If someone tries telling me they don't understand why anyone could enjoy a particular book, or insinuate that only a certain age demographic can possibly get any value out of it, that person's opinion instantly doesn't matter to me. If they're not going to respect that other people have preferences, I'm not going to respect theirs 😂 There was a book I once read that I absolutely hated. It was called "Soulless" (if this is ringing a bell and it's your favourite book, I apologise). I thought it suffered from terrible tonal issues, as well as some overly frilly and conveluted sentence structure that tried to represent the book's victorian setting (but then it had the occasional painfully modern piece of dialogue that completely shattered any sense of atmosphere that had managed to build up). The two main characters seemed more interested in boning each other while one of our lead's best friends was possibly getting tortured in another room (and she knew this), and gods, the amount of times the main character was refurred to or refurred to herself as a spinster (having reached her late twenties without getting a husband) was incredibly repetitive. No joke, I had to read that word what felt like four times per chapter. I get it. She's not like other girls and the world is obsessed with her marital status 🙄 I hated this book. The only reason I finished it was to feel more justified in my hatred of it. I wanted to BURN the damn thing! ... But I didn't. I gave it to a charity shop because I knew that there may well be someone who'll pick up that book and discover a new favourite, or an entirely new love of reading having read it. That book held no value for me, but I'm not going to ignore the value it may have for someone else and refuse the possibility. That would've been so feckin presumptuous. I honestly hope it's sitting happily on someone's shelf right now, battered and we'll read. Who am I to dictate what others enjoy?

I don't mind if books I like are criticized, so long as it is the story that is the target of the harshness and not the author or me. When the criticism uses fun turns of phrases, such as the person comparing the depth of the book's characters to a drizzly puddle, then I can even find some joy in the review/roast.

The thing with hype is that it gets so loud you often can't hear anybody's dissenting opinions or critical thoughts until after the hype has died down and you're left with a little bit more quiet and space to hear opposing opinions. I think it's the same thing with legendborn where everybody loved reading it initially but afterwards people reflected on it or read it after the hype and realized there's actually problems in it and is actively trying to temper a little bit of the hype so that people aren't disappointed when they read it.
