I honestly have so much respect for the DNF people. I physically can't, NOT finish a book, I'll just force myself to read whatever hell it is, just so I won't feel defeated 😂

I do that, and when I just CAN'T finish the book I'll leave it and continue reading it several months or even years later (happened with Treasure Island more than 3 times already). Or else I'll get a looooong reading slump 💀

I used to be force myself to finish books I didn't like until I came across one that made me so uncomfortable, I had to quit. I DNF every now and then, but I don't make that decision unless I'm halfway through the book first.

I DNFed 2 books today. If I'm just not in the mood for a book, I tag it as "return to this" on my storygraph. If it's because I genuinely dislike the book, I feel no guilt.

Yes! Audiobook while knitting/crocheting/sewing I can do. But actually reading?! I still don't understand how despite having met someone who does. (They said they hold the book open with their toes so their hands are free to knit. And all I can think is how uncomfortable that'd be after a while)

Way back in the oldie days, my junior high school English teacher told me that I should always be reading 3 books; a work of fiction to spark the imagination, a work of history to educate wisdom, and a work of poetry to flame the heart. I will read a book while simultaneously listening to its audiobook; especially if the setting for the book has a unique English dialect or regional vocabulary where hearing it is easier to process than to read it.

When I was younger (around 10 years old), I read Harry Potter and I used to memorize the page number instead of using a bookmark. Even if I stopped mid-chapter (which happened quite a lot as I was a slow reader). And I found it easy ! I don't think I could still do it now (I'm 29) 😅 but I don't care because I have a collection of pretty bookmarks that I love to use 😊

There was a time I could close a book and pick it up later, opening it to the exact page (or within 2-3 pages of that mark) just by intuition alone. (I could never remember page numbers for the life of me thanks to dyscalculia) but now? I Need that bookmark in place or I'm lost. (Though this may be because I don't read as often anymore. Back then I was devouring several books a day, now I'm lucky if my brain stays focused long enough for one a week. Which is why I've switched to audiobooks lately)

I also count pages how many pages are in a chapter! Especially if I’m reading at night. It helps to validate the “just one more chapter!” Part of me. I don’t necessarily memorize the page number I stopped at, but I remember what was happening and roughly where I was in the book physically and can find my place pretty quickly. I didn’t have bookmarks reading as a kid, and now that I’m an adult with plenty of bookmarks, half the time they are strewn about the house and I don’t know where the one I want is 😂

Since 2016 I've been writing down my reading progress in a notebook. Then I started writing down pages and month I read them. Every year when I set my book goal, I set a page goal too! So now I have several years of every book I read in the year, how many pages they were, and what month I read them in. :)
@LambBrooke

I am in the criss cross applesauce, stretched legs, AND walking while reading club. I usually alternate what position I'm sitting in after anywhere between 5-20 minutes (depending on how physically demanding my position is) unless I'm so intensely into a book that I've zoned out of everything else completely and then I don't move for ages, but that typically only happens during climactic parts. My mom laughs so hard at some of the positions I cycle through when I'm reading--nothing is off the table. I read in criss cross applesauce, while walking in circles around the couch, with one leg extended and the other bent, in the splits, in pigeon pose, in cockroach position on my back with my legs in the air, in downward facing dog if I can find that thing that holds my book open, etc... Nothing is off the table, honestly, but I don't think its a bad thing since I feel like a) it's good for my body because I can really get my stretching in and b) it helps me stay focused so I don't veer off into unrelated trains of thought with my ADHD if I switch things up periodically. The sensation of a stretch helps me stay focused too since I'm getting a little extra stimulus from that. Also sidenote since you were asking about walking while reading vs. clumsiness: I am genuinely a very coordinated person. I've been doing dance since I was 3 years old, and I have a very good awareness of my body in space, so that probably helps. It's also easier if you're familiar with the environment and it's not too crowded (landmarks don't move, but people do and you don't always know where they'll be). I can walk and read at the same time in unfamiliar environments but it does require a little more multitasking energy since you have to pay attention to other people in the back of your mind constantly.

1. I'm also one of those people who will wait until the whole series is out before I start reading it. I don't binge read it though. In fact, I don't like binge reading or binge watching anything. 2. I actually don't drink anything while reading. In the past I used to make myself a cup of tea but I found out that sipping the tea took me out of the story of the book and so I broke the habit. 3. I'm also very picky about my environment when I am reading. It has to be 100 % quiet, no people whatsoever and for the most part I can read only at home or in closed spaces at best. 4. I usually set a timer/alarm on my phone for when I should stop reading. Often I would have to go out or do something after my reading time or my bedtime is about to arrive and in order to not have to be constantly distracted by the thought about all that, I just set a timer and that helps me relax.

If I start to really like a book, I'll Google fanart after a few chapters. It helps me visualize the characters even better so I can focus more on the plot than trying to visualize every character or even place sometimes. Plus, I want to see the art of other ppl who are obsessing over the same book

I think mine has to be that if I'm reading a really exciting part of a book and I'm a little scared of what's going to happen, I go to the end to see how the book ends😂🤭 I haven't google to see if a character survived but when I was younger and love triangle was populare in fantasy books. I sometimes google it to see who end up with who😂 I kind of hate angsty stuff 🤭🤭

The thing is I really love reading while walking home, because I live on a freaking hill and it usually takes me about 20 minutes to reach my house. 9:45 Oooh. I do this too, it is so much fun trying to connect the dots and then reading the pervious book! It's like the pervious book would feel like a flash back to me and it's so much fun looking back at the characters and see how they were before the events of the next book. I say there is something super special about reading a series this way! It's like watching a reverse character arc. For example in a redemption arc you can watch them to go from redemption to evil. But I say the book needs to be wonderfully written for this trick to work!

One more comment here, but for those who want to keep track of how many pages they've read in the year, goodreads does that for you. If you go into my books and then click on reading stats, there's an option to see pages read in a year and a rough chart of how many pages you've read over time as well. That might be fun for you to look at :)

My reading quirk is that I accidentally quit breathing when I read. My friends say I literally stop breathing for a minute or so, and then I make small sigh/gasping noises when my body can't take it anymore. Apparently, I've been doing it for years, but I'm never aware of it when I do it. Also, I have to protect my book at all costs when reading it. This means I use a padded book sleeve to keep it safe when I carry it in bags, I try not to bend or crease the pages, and I 100% will put the book under my clothes to keep it from getting rained or snowed on while I get soaked. The book must be protected at all costs! Oh, and I also judge (and get disappointed) in an author if I see there's only a short amount of pages till the end but I know there's a butt-load of content still left to be written. It usually means that the author is rushing the ending. :C My friend has a weird reading quirk: she buys a new book, reads the ending, and *then* begins the book. She also reads a movie synopsis and spoilers before going to see a movie in theaters. I asked her what the point of that was and she said that she has no patience and needs to know the ending of the story first.

My weird habit is reading very quickly. Not skimming or speed-reading, I'm totally understanding the content, but I can read very fast. I read Aurora's End (~530 pages) in two hours out of sheer determination because I wanted to finish it before I had to go to bed for school the next day. also, hardcore relating to 14:09 with the invisible audience. Especially on rereads, I'll tell the characters when they're making a stupid decision (not just with books either, I find myself yelling at Star Trek characters a lot)

Ooh, the one with the one eye open while reading on the side is something I do too! It's because the closed eye is touching the pillow, it would be uncomfortable to open it. Does that make sense? The problem for me is that I am very short-sighted on my right eye, so I can only do it on one side. So can't switch the open eye, can't switch the side position. And that gets tiring after a while haha.

My weird reading habit: I read books in tenths. I basically take 3-4 bookmarks, round the page count up, and then stick bookmarks in at the different markers. So if a book is 396 pages long, I round up to 400, and then read the book in 40 page increments. Note that I typically try to look for a chapter break near the target page count. But it just helps me see how much progress I've made in a book to do this. Also I tend to read books in trios- as in, I read 3 books at once, and swap beteen the three each time I hit a 10% marker. It keeps me engaged and motivates me to actually finish more books

I rarely officially DNF so much as put a book down and just never get around to it again until such a long time has passed that I realize it's not happening. I have an uncanny ability to find where I left off in a book. No one gets to see or appreciate this but me. I also seem to be able to easily flip back to other portions while looking for a passage. Maybe the books the person reads out of order are in a series in a genre where there's not a strong plot or through line. A romance series can usually be read in any order with only mild spoilers. Or the Discworld books where people jump around all the time to read their favorite arcs. Well, I guess the arcs are sequential, but you can do this without struggling with what's come before. I read with only one eye opened. I close the left. Storygraph will easily give you the charts with the spikes on pages read, and other charts. OMG, I talk to an invisible audience too, sort of lecture it on the book. I also give history lectures to my audience. I do this silently. Mostly. My thing is that the more I like an author or series, the more I drag my heels in reading them. I like knowing these great books are ahead of me.

I usually strongly dislike any kind of spoiler, but there was a moment in a book where I was crying uncontrollably and had to get confirmation whether a character had really died. Here for the great shirt choices, as well as the awesome content of course. Weird reading habits: waiting to read a highly anticipated book in the right headspace, giving up and just falling into it, at probably not a great moment. Reading in my armchair, feet on footstool, fidgeting endlessly as I start the book cos I'm so excited. Then reading way too fast, and having to constantly go back to re-read things both to get it right and prolong the suspense.

But outside of commenting on the rest of them, my things are A) While I love physical books, I read in my Kindle Paperwhite a lot. Not even just for the convenience, but because I love turning off the lights, playing some music in the background, and just reading in the dark. Its so relaxing. B) I have a list for my TBR both online, and on a notes app on my phone. 20 books to a page. If i cant think of what to read, i roll a dice to find the lage, then a d20 to find the book. At most i can do 3 tries, and then I must pick one of the 3. If I find a new book to add to the TBR I find a blank space and add it there.

I take off ALL book jackets since they are too easy to rip, and I typically like the nakey book design more. Unless I truly love the jacket way better than the nakey book design (or lack thereof) I always remove them. I do collect book jackets however since my grampa once thought about wallpapering a room or library with book jackets. I have a box and bag full. I have a little magazine holder for my bathroom. Without going into it, with tummy issues I get _TONS_ of reading done. At least that's a plus

Due to my lack of focus, I’ve been doing kind of a modified pomodoro technique where I will read for 15 or 30 minutes, then take a 5-15 minute break. Then I’ll go back to reading for another 15 or 30 minute stint. It’s been very helpful so far.

Ahhh, yeah I also need to wait for all books in a series (even if it's a duology) to be out before reading it. It's killing me waiting for OUABH to be done, but .. almost!

I keep track of the number of books I read and pages and add them to a graph at the end of the year. (I have 8 years' of data currently.) I never set a "read X books this year" goal since I want reading to remain just a fun thing I do, but it is interesting to see how my reading fluctuates annually.

the dust jacket as a bookmark I'll do if i don't have a bookmark, but ONLY for the first couple of chapters. i don't want to ruin the dust jackets. also, i tend to procrastinate reading the final book of a series i love because i don't want the series to end. I'm doing it right now with A Court of Silver Flames. I keep putting it off 😅

The seeing how long the chapter is is totally me. I get distracted easily and seeing how long the chapter is helps me go, ok I have to focus for this long.

People are gonna call me weird but I CANNOT drink and/or eat while reading. I am too scared to drop something on my books cause I am so clumsy. I also wash my hands before starting to read and when I start a new book, I always start with the acknowledgement (and pray for no spoilers) because they deserve to be read and I know at the end of a book, I am still stuck in it so I would skip the acknowledgement. Sorry for my english, it's not my native language

I read the last sentence/paragraph of a book before I start it and most of the time it makes me even more excited to read it. I'm such a slow reader and have such a bad memory that I usually forget how it ends anyway. 😂

I also do the thing of not using a bookmark, even if it's mid chapter. My logic: if I can't remember if I read this or not, it means I wasn't paying attention properly, so I should start where I actually remember reading the page.

Sometimes I will google the plot of something just so I can read a fan fiction about a series I know nothing about. This often happens with crossovers or authors I love.

Set book down and walk off the overstimulation before continuing. I also keep a book in the bathroom, as it's the only room I can read in without interruptions.

14:10 omg I feel that one! I usually film mylsef talking about a book for several minutes and then never watch that video lol but I always feel the need to film it because somehow those thoughts are very important and I don't want to loose them hahahaha (I only now realize how weird that is😅)

I have a weird thing where I do dramatic readings aloud of books while walking around my room. Pretty sure that habit came from when I was a little kid and would read to the pets...but I have to stop myself from doing it in public areas 😅

The duck night light would be cool. I have a cloud night light that read with at night. I also major in Meteorology and wanna be a weather forecaster so everything I have is weather related. If I can add clouds to my other hobbies I will.

Timing yourself as you read, yeeeees! I often look at the clock every 4 pages to see how long it took me, and then calculate how much more I can read by a certain time. It actually keeps me engaged in reading longer, because apparently my brain can't do just one thing. 😅

I read while I game. The thing is I want to typically do more than one thing. And the way I compromise is by multi tasking. So I will be watching a show, and I will be reading a book. I will be playing a game and reading a book. The only thing put full focus into doing lately is clay, but that is partly because I am getting back into it and I am working off images from my phone.
