This is a really unique challenge and I'm very impressed. I think a mile is just enough distance to where it lasts a while in the mind. So you can't just easily push through it, it definitely takes some mental gymnastics to keep your pace. Nice work dude

Why would it be 5:45? 545 is a little under half way between 500 and 600, so shouldn't your goal to hit also be a little under 5:30 given this rule?

I love this challenge a lot. I've also been enjoying the running lifting progression. As an ultra runner who lifts for strength I often get told "you move well for a big guy" or "imagine how good you'd be without the weight lifting" great to see someone else smashing it in both disciplines

One thing I immediately noticed about your technique is how explosive you are from the knee up. Clearly all the time you spent doing snatches and cleans. Congrats on what is essentially a PR. I remember when you pulled 600 and you were way bigger then you are currently. Keep it up Alan, you are one of my favorites.

Math note: if #500=5min and #600=6min, then #545 deadlift corresponds to a 5:27 mile time, not 5:45. Still a great effort! 🎉

I was trying to run a 6 minute mile and deadlift 600 lbs a couple summers ago. The deadlift took it out of me and only had enough in the tank to muster a 6:23 mile. Good part was that I came out of the training in close to the best shape of my life.

It's interesting that you are the 2nd KZbinr I've seen who had a goal like this. Nick Simmons also had the goal for a while of doing a 500lbs deadlift and a 5 minute mile on the same day. for him a 5 minute mile is very doable, but he still hasn't hit the 500lbs deadlift. Congrats on hitting this perfect ballance. My current mile pr is a 7 20, and my deadlift pr is 395. so I've got a while to go.

He's a shell of what he used to be. He was an absolute beast. Alan was thicccck. I bet his body thanks him for it. Your body just doesn't like to carry around a lot of mass regardless if it's fat or muscle.

@@HooDRidEWhiteY he decided to drop weight. Maybe it was a health issue. We don't know. But I can say on my experience going from 290 to 235 has made a huge difference in my life. I'm not as strong but I will take health over bigger numbers.

Awesome content Alan! Watching this makes me miss track runs. It’s too bad there isn’t a public track in the Sacramento area available. Those seeking a track usually have to work around school schedules to gain access. They should build a community center with a track included for public use. Access to a public track is 1 thing I miss while living in Campbell, CA.

I'm at 3:04, however...you need to do a mile in 5:30 and not 5:45 because 600lbs would be 6 minute mile. (: BTW, it's been several years since I saw one of your videos, and you are in FANTASTIC shape dude! I finished the video, and well...5:37 is close enough. You could have gotten 5:30 pretty easy.

I think there's also a huge difference between a person who has been an athlete most of his life being employed at a place which requires fitness and a person who finds fitness later in life or has absolutely no background in even school sports.

Dang, Alan!! That was a great mile! I’ve been running long distance and just started doing deadlifts again. I’m racing a 10K next weekend, hoping to get sub-7 minutes per mile. Soon after that I think I’ll work on my mile time and building up more strength in the deadlift again!

I really like the idea of matching mile time to deadlift, very satisfying use of numbers. Not at all feasible for me any time soon but I'm going to try and think of something else. Maybe a kilometre time would be a stepping stone goal. And nice job on the run!

This is awesome. And in a world of 500kg attempts it’s cool seeing what real world standards are like. Especially while most people don’t want to deal with the lifestyle of being a huge monster who can pull big numbers. A mile run at a good pace as well a decent strength level is something a lot of athletes will get behind. Especially operator sorts

Super impressive! I Remember those butterflies in 1992 when running the 2 miles for the AFPT in 1992. A 100 score was something like 12:04 and I would consistently hit 12:10ish. Anyway, I know how fast you were flying to that number on top of hitting those DL numbers, very inspiring!

Shout out to Fergus Crawley! He was the first person to come up with the idea for a 500lb deadlift and sub 5:00 mile in the same day! He also tried to run a sub 5 hour 50k in the same day but fell just short because of cramping.

Really like the combination of weights and running. As a 58 year old would be great to see the mile times / deadlift weights on a age related basis.

Me too. At 60, it makes little sense to be as strong as possible and ignore cardiovascular fitness - and running is as much the best tool for that as barbells are for strength. There are calculators that will age-adjust running times for all the conventional racing distances, including the mile - that would be one way to approach the combo in a "doable" way for us "mature audiences." 😉

so ideally you'd want to be somewhere between 60-95lbs, ie 460-495 or 560-595 since that would equate to a 5 minute - 5 35, or a 6 minute - 6 35 mile respectively.

Since there aren’t 100 seconds in a minute, wouldn’t you have to divide that 100 pound increment by 60 seconds to come up with the proper equivalent? In this case, a 545 deadlift would equate to a 5:27 run time 🫠

VERY "Manly" DL Alan, AND even more impressive to me is your overall athleticism which is attributable to your running program. What was also interesting that even tho you didn't max-out your DL for years you did a double-overhand grip (NO straps) and I assume you hook-gripped? In earlier videos you used a lot of switch-grip (which some would say is easier) so that 545 plus running time shows you are in MUCH better overall shape than in the past! Keep up the good work!

World record is 3:43 so no way I'm running a 3:35 mile. Maybe a 6 minute if I try though because my leisurely no struggle pace is around 7-8 depending on how lazy I run.

My no struggle pace even when I was running a ton was like 9:30 so you're way better than I ever was. Right now it's like 11 mins flat at best. Granted I have some respiratory disorders that permanently limit me.

Growing up I ran sub 6 minute miles for fun but I also swam and ran a ton and walked up to 100 miles a week just getting around. Now I'm happy with any bit I can manage. Being disabled myself in adulthood I can relate to having limitations.

@xCreepyKidsx Yeah I hear you on that. I was the "sick kid" at times growing up and was forced by my doctor to be excused from intensive gym activity etc. Was completely sedentary til I was 20. So very different childhoods. I absolutely have shit genetics for fitness but I still stay active and it's completely worth it.
