Thank you for addressing the elephant in the room. The continued failure of PDs to call out poor behavior/performance isn't going to end well. Not holding individual officers accountable puts the burden on ALL officers. If PDs can't/won't differentiate between the good and bad, why would the public? The divide between law enforcement and civilians grows wider every day. Pushback has created auditors, calls to end qualified immunity, defunding police, and for lawsuits to be settled from pension funds rather than taxpayers. Every privilege granted to LE for officer safety has been abused - qualified immunity, Terry stops, PA vs Mimms, taking word of LE over civilian, furtive movement, use of force, turning traffic stops into fishing expeditions, charges of RDO and assault on an officer (for incidental dings) to manufacture offenses, using triggers such as "relax" or "calm down" to pop someone off, or triggering the flight or fight reflex, both which are felonies when LE is involved. Respect and trust in LE won't improve until departments and officers show good faith by holding themselves accountable and demand better. More training doesn't help if the mindset is wrong. Sharp mental skills and discipline is foundational to everything else. Until LE values the life of an innocent civilian as much as their own, nothing is likely to change.

This is great conversation. More elite training and standards for cops. Longer training, stricter standards. I never understood “defund the police”. Why not train them better and be pickier.

It basically takes an act of congress to get that done. Then when it does get done, it's still a twice a year kind of thing. We are able to fade the one or two significant events a year that the public really cares about.

Agreed about training and standards. It’s tough times when the social/political climate has made the job so undesirable. I’m a firefighter and medic for our CRT. Our city is radically violent and a dying shell like many rust belters; and we were discussing how this recent ‘try out’ for our team’s operators slots was the lowest turn out it’s ever been. I don’t necessarily blame anyone for not wanting to do this kind of work. Or your kind of work. Especially when, like here, you are bastards in the eye of the administration and council. Why would anyone want to risk everything they’ve got, potentially their life, when the very city they serve hates them? It’s first in/last out of hell. Literally. I don’t think there’s many folks walking around that want that cross. But. This is what it is. The standards should demand the highest quality candidates. Not drop to scraping barrels for gruel or making allowances to add bodies. God bless. Stay safe ☦️

Good one, what comes to mind for me also is the perception that training in tactics and forward thinking (& acting) should be analogous with being a fit officer. Or maybe, 'my mode of operating is to just talk and work situations while trying to use my firearm as little as possible throughout my career'. There are a lot of officers and departments who will not pass physical fitness test (very sure), but can still train on forward thinking and working on reducing stress levels in tense situations. You can't drive well enough to have situational awareness in traffic to anticipate on other road users, don't act or give room for a trained colleague then. I'd think you wouldn't want to be unfit, incapable, make a really bad mistake to fall asleep to throughout your career (and beyond), and now look for criminals to reafirm your cause for lower standards.

I know this isn't exactly the conversation. I have this fear that I'll be put in a no-win situation where my training and the situation appear straightforward at first glance, but no matter what I do, it ends badly or results in a poor outcome. A mistake is just that-a mistake-but we all know we should accept it and hold ourselves accountable. Yet, that fear is heavy, and I walk with it.

The scenario you described is the reason LE has been granted so many legal protections, and why those protections should be held in sacred trust. LE has to make split-second decisions with little information. Mistakes are inevitable, and experience is frequently hard-earned. No-win situations and honest mistakes are tragic, but forgivable. You're responsible for your actions, not the outcome. The things that outrage the public always involve things any reasonable person could or should have known better than to do. Develop a keen mind and pure heart, then walk in trust, not fear. Let go of what you can’t control and focus on what you can. All the best to you.

I think there is also something to be said about getting good results when you didn't deserve to get a good result. Like, imagine theres a badguy, and the cop rightfully shoots him and stops him, but 80% of the shots go beyond the target into a potentially bad place for bullets to be, but no one get hit by stray bullets, but they could have. So you could then ask: could you have positioned yourself so there was a safer backstop? did you actually use your sights properly or were you more just panic shooting? it's something you see in every profession where the person is like: Oh well, I got a good result so why are you trying to point out all the mistakes I made? and it's sort of like: BRO, the mistakes you made might have not mattered in this situation, but if you got into a harder more complex situation, they could have got someone killed. If you still make these mistakes in an easier, less complicated situation, what makes you think you won't make them in a harder situation?

Absolutely….the question then becomes about defining success. I can tell you that there are very few people who care enough about the outcome enough to even find the bad in an event that was relatively “successful.” I know this because I don’t see cops who perform poorly (yet hold a pro active job) seeking out training and trying to improve… And…if you are not driven enough after performing poorly, and it also being viewed on the Internet …you never will. They simply seek out the events for some type of mythical affirmation that they are “the guy”

It’s been my experience that police officers get extreme performance anxiety when they are training firearms. Especially if it’s in front of regular citizens. They generally want to only train as a group of their own police. That could come from protecting an ego but most likely it comes from long standing culture. I certainly hope it’s not liability concern. Either way if an individual officer is not confident enough to train in front of anyone that’s a clue they need work. Having said this how do they expect to perform under extreme stress. Nothing is better motivation than self evaluation.
@Forward_Concepts

I agree, but the majority of cops don’t want to train in the presence of anyone or train period. We see this whenever there is mandatory tactical training and officers within the training itself avoid the moments they are training for. Most of them scoff about how dumb it is the entire time.

@@Forward_Concepts I get the accountability piece of it, and if that’s so important, why aren’t we holding the agency/city leadership accountable for lack of training and funding? We all know there’s plenty of officers that’s aren’t getting the training they need, especially if they are held to a higher standard.

@@SNAKEEATER1776 we can talk about holding people accountable. Just like politicians…when are they held accountable ? Remove this person from office, get a new one, new agenda… That mission is vary grand. Therefore my mission is finding the individuals who want the information, each individual officer has an opportunity to gain the skills and knowledge , that’s about all we can do to influence. Or at least what I can do.

There is not an unlimited source of tax payer funds. So many say “pay police more” (this gentleman drives what appears to be a Tesla, so I’m thinking he’s doing fairly well), “pay teachers more” ( for part time work - do the math - and kids get dumber), pay everyone more. But the people paying more taxes are not making more. The job should first be a calling, and pay should be adequate but not excessive. What do I do? I’m an ER and Trauma ICU nurse, and guarantee there’s a lot of police/LE who make more than I do. I’m responsible for direct patient care, for double checking doctors, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, my fellow nurses as well as myself. I have 19 years experience. I have personally saved lives of patients and visitors alike. Should I make more? If so, from where does the money come to pay me more? If not, why shouldn’t I? Having said all that, I think this is an excellent channel, hopefully police everywhere watch and discuss and learn from this. Civilians can learn as well, as to how best to either cooperate, or stay out of the way of officers in high stress situations.

The deeper conversation and reality is that police officers have lived in a space where their actions have been deemed infallible by the public, based on their proximity to certain demographics. When police aren’t held accountable for close to a century, it breeds the type of attitude that you’re discussing. I respect what you’re doing and the message that you were trying to convey, but I am hopeful that one day you will be honest and just address the problem head on. Respectfully

100% for over a decade ive been telling guys that they cant wait for their department to send them to training. You HAVE to train yourself. Guns/hand to hand/fitness/law knowledge all of it. The buck stops with the individual officer. If you arent motivated to perform at the highest level you can without having anyone tell you to do it then you need to go sell used cars. Youll probably make more money and nobody gets killed bc you havent trained in 6 months.

@@Forward_Concepts the problem of allowing police officers to be heavy handed with little to no accountability against blacks and minorities. It’s been de facto “ok” until now that it’s spilling over into every other demographic and being showcased on social media weekly. We still have to a large extent the majority of law enforcement ABSOLUTELY UNWILLING to call out other officers for clear and easily visible violations of rights. It’s detrimental to both your community, and the greater good of society. Nobody wins with lack of transparency, and a two tiered legal system. Respectfully. On a side note, I’m not attempting to race bait or act as if every interaction is unjustified. I’m a professional, and have the utmost respect for what you guys go through and deal with. I actually work with former cops who have been shot or involved in a shooting in the line of duty on a therapeutic project. I mean absolutely no offense or disrespect.
