The game may not be perfect but the combat/fighting makes up more than enough for that. Imo it has one of, if not the best combat systems of any of the rpgs that I've tried and I've tried quite afew of them.

Just a few points: The portcrystals, which you use to set your own fast travel points, you can find one at each "main quest" given out once you reach the main city, so you can have 4-5 custom ones on your first playthrough and that's ontop of the 3 locked ones. And the pawns learn from how you use them, so some pawns who have the "wrong" inclanations can be terrible. But once you find a well trained one, they can become beasts. Hope this helps!

That's great information, thank you. I'm surprised I missed the additional portcrystals, as I was fairly thorough (yet stayed away from guides as much as possible). Those extras would have made my playthrough a lot smoother!

One of my top favorite games! Great unique review. I've never thought of Dragon's Dogma as a clunky game. Been always too immersed with its world. And I agree with the Japanese making western rpgs. They usually turn out good. e.g. Dark Souls. Keep up the good work man!

Just learned about this game when Dragon's Dogma 2 got announced recently and really liked what I seen and had to try out Dragon's Dogma. I'm having so much fun and almost complete with the main story before heading into the DLC stuff but I just keep exploring trying to complete everything before I fight the final boss. I was spoiled and learned about the lover thing but some how didn't get the one i was trying to get, I got the witch and all i had her do was brew potions.

in Dark Arisen(the only version of the game worth discussing as it's the only available one) it's hard to miss out on at least 4 port crystals unless you don't explore the map and skip quests. One in the early Everfall(Call of the Abyss), one with the Dragonforged, one in the Shadowfort, and one at Bluemoon Tower. There's another in the Witchwood after Witch Hunt but it's easy to miss that first quest and not get Witch Hunt later. So the player easily gets 3 just by doing the early game quests. You get an eternal ferrystone as well in Dark Arisen(in inventory once you get to Gran Soren). They all respawn in NG+(and placed ones stay when you start NG+) + you can buy more in NG+, and the game is very much designed with NG+ in mind. 5 spots + Cassardis and Gran Soren for 7 fast

Dragon's Dogma actually has a very deep story and i like it, idrc about stories and stuffs on games but i actually saw a lot of stuffs on youtube about dd lore and it actually has a very deep lore, it's just not perfectly presented in the game which is why the story sometimes gets confusing, i hope they make the story more clearer in dd2.

I really enjoyed the story. I wouldn't say it's purely there just to get you to the gameplay. On the surface it may not seem like much. But it is a story you do have to think about, and if you don't understand, look into. Figuring out what the Pawns even are or what they're there for was very interesting. I wouldn't knock the story. It's like Dark Souls in that the story is basically side content. You don't need to know exactly what's going on. But if you're interested to know then there are opportunities for you to learn and think about what's happening.

I think I'd like to explore some of the deeper layers on another playthrough. I did pick up on a few pieces of dialogue about the pawns, but the world building didn't feel as consistent as Dark Souls etc. I just feel it's far more gameplay forward than other games of its kind. Thanks for watching and commenting! :)

Love the game and hope you're hyped for Dragon's Dogma 2 and idk if it's been said, but I recall people mentioned that we can train our pawns by unequipping their weapons and just make them watch for awhile. Idk if it works cause I haven't tried it myself

Well, I made a Stereotypical big black dude (pawn was a giant Blastcheese Albino), and actually ended up with Fournival's daughter, completely unintended. The height and size disparity made some of the cutscenes wonky as the camera had to find a middle-ground. The last cutscene of the game showed my character model from the back, completely hiding the little girl except for a bit of sleeve. I don't even know what expression she had.

Have you seen the Dragons Dogma Online that was released in Japan(it shut down)? I wish they would have released it everywhere else. The combat was straight up DMC level type stuff.

The main problem with this game is that it has so many interesting mechanics, little details and lore, but it fails to show these things properly to the player so new players are often lost, confused and miss 80% of the fun because of that.
