Dan has recently changed the way he approaches a two-amp electric guitar rig. Here’s how…
Life too short for long KZbin videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! In this episode we revisit the theme of running two amps. It’s something Dan and I do pretty much all the time, either in a wet-dry scenario, full stereo or simple dual mono. It’s a massive sound at any volume, and we recommend that everybody tries it.
However…
To date our approach has always been to select two amps of roughly similar power and headroom characteristics because we want our boosts and overdrives to react in a similar way into both amps. Daniel is tossing all of that into the trash here as he’s making one amp much more overdriven than the other and changing his overdrive pedal signal routing accordingly.
What will we learn?
Enjoy the video!

This is what I love about the internet. You can have Keith Williams over at Five Watt World encouraging us to "make the most music with the least amount of gear" and then come over hear and check out Dan and Mick trying to get us to hook up every piece of gear we have all at once. There's something for everyone!

John Mcgeoch of Siouxsie and the banshees used to run a 50 watt marshall combo distorted in tandem with a jc120 clean with the stereo chorus and he would use all of the effects (a dynacomp as a boost, an mxr flanger and a yamaha e1005 delay) into both. The dynacomp would make the roland jump in volume a bit and it sounded huge. A very cool sound

@@mattgilbert7347 Adrian's lesson is the best one (AnyoneCanPlayGuitar). When my old guitar (I thought) died a few years ago (I ended up getting it fixed anyway) I ordered a Yamaha SG1000 from Japan and decided Spellbound would be the first thing I ever played on it - so I learned it from Adrian's video - perfectly (been playing many years with some time off). So when it arrived, that's what I did. And a year or so later - I got a JC120. Some McGeoch stuff can be really hard to play for people who don't have long fingers like he did. Adrian's comment (on I think his Halloween lesson) "McGeoch you're having a laugh" made me chuckle. On an aside note - I have a theory that "Spellbound" is actually a jazz funk track if you play the riff notes as chords in a funky way to the main backing track - yuo will see what I mean.

Something I have done before when recording is use an ABC box to split my signal to two different amps, different effects on each (reverb on one, and a very short slapback delay on the other, for example) and set them to where I can clean up with the volume on my guitar. The result, a pseudo double tracked guitar, but 2 different tones. Depending on the sounds I want, I can also use different drive pedal combinations to mix it up. It doesn't replace real double tracking entirely as the differences of the individual performances make the sound bigger too, but I feel it cuts down on the number of double tracked tracks I need to do individually.

I am in the process of acquiring an attenuator so I can run my 5E3 broken up with the '64 Princeton having more headroom. I haven't really done a full wet-dry situation, but just the reverb and trem of the Princeton contrasting with the dry of the 5E3 is just amazing. This episode is exactly the kind of gear nonsense I needed this Friday.

Bloody hell - Daniel crushing it at the beginning there. I picked a good moment to listen through some decent cans and DAC, just as that all kicked off - sensational. You chaps are the reason I’ve wound my way to wet/dry set up (currently Two Rock Trad Clean and Morgan JS12, with the latter being the centre of the sound like that J20), with some great pedals and loving it. Going to swap the TR for an AC20 live, so I have two unassuming little boxes to sneak into gigs and not frighten everyone :)

I have way more amps than my skill level would dictate. Played a gig in Nashville a few weeks ago and being that it was a 10 PM Saturday night slot on Broadway which can be tricky loading in and out, I decided to go light and just brought a 50 watt Kitana. I used my normal pedal board (which is likely 10 times the cost of the amp) and was thrilled with the result. That Artist Amp does a ton and works awesome as a pedal platform.

Totally inspiring and thanks for all that you guys continue to do. And thanks to my GigRig G3 (life changing and thanks to Joe for help!), I also recently discovered the beauty of leaving my Fender Tweed Deluxe alone and letting it do its thing as the Dry amp in my Wet/Dry/Wet rig. Once pushed enough, the Deluxe (with Alnico Blue) is stunning, has a beautiful, lush, velvety bottom end and mid-range, has a glassy, sophisticated top end, and simply sounds better without any drive pedals going into it (and it is already loud starting at amp Volume 2). Then add brighter Wet amps with some pre-delay to the reverb, and it creates this crazy 3D dimension to the sound with both warmth and brightness. Unending joy and discovery, thanks guys!

Thanks for an excellent show of experimentation! I recently got an ABYBaby to dual a 20w Carl's Blonde Bassman and a 65 RI Princeton, so not unlike your last two amps. I had been thinking down an opposite track: no dirt pedals into the wet amp (Princeton) but now I'll be trying several arrangements; one I'm thinking if for lower volumes us to make the Princeton at about 4.5 as the headroom/wet amp with gain from pedals, since the volume and master relationship on the Blonde allows for adjustable gain. The big takeaway is sending different pedals into each amp. A little more fiddly without a switcher, but I'm seeing them as separate 'mini' pedalboard chains routed off the same board. Bravo!

You gents teased me with that one! ;-) When I saw three on the floor, I thought you were bringing back the epic wet/dry/wet rig. Surely, Dan is tooling around with having the "dry" J cranked up the middle with the treble booster as needed and two "wet" amps on the sides with various ODs/effects wobbling to and fro. Can't wait to see where this splitting journey takes y'all! Thanks for all the laughs and learnings fellas. Cheers!

Experimenting with this now and I'm so pleased with the results. I am using a Helix (yeah, yeah, whatever...) and running a Matchless and a Lone Star with the Lone Star as the dirty amp and it just sounds perfect. Great tips in this episode!

Oh happy day ,I love Two amp time ! I'm forever grateful to the two of you for all your educational videos on the subject .I still remember the first time I saw one, and it was one of those awakening moments ,where every thing just seems more in focus .I now have four different sets of wet /dry combo rigs .It's been such a fun experience finding "my tone" For me it's always two different amps i.e. Fender/Marshall ,and lots of pedals for gain staging ,and mod/delay options. It's what I'd call more of a "moist/damp" tone ha! P.S. put some tps stickers on the mini pedal board I built for my gui(pedal)tar student .Who after 6 months of lessons joined the school jazz band! and after 6 weeks just had their first concert (six songs) !!

I’ve used an Orange OR15 into a 4x12 cab and a Mesa F30 for years. I Iove the spring reverb in the Mesa and have gone through so many reverb pedals trying to get that sound for my Orange rig. I happen to be at my local guitar shop when I guy sold his EHX switchblade. I bought it and finally set up my rig in stereo and it sounds incredible. I have a Boss RE-20 Space Echo coming on Monday and I can’t wait to hear it through this new rig. Stereo rules. Thanks for giving me some ideas!

I just received my fuzz tee shirt. Lovely packaging and the stickers were a nice bonus. The shirt is a very soft, high quality material and the printing looks great. I'll be ordering more, thanks Dan and Mick!

This may be my favorite episode. My challenge is that I split with a mini vent. I shelved some lovely overdrives for what played well with a wide range of amps (Broadcast and Klone). All the modulation follows on one side after the mini vent.

Hi Dan!, Hi Mick!, greetings from the 16 y/o that has become an avid pedal enjoyer (due to you). Just finished my board :), it’s a: Jam Pedals Rattler (due to you)-> Boss BD-2 (due to you)-> JHS Bonsai -> Walrus Monument v2 (due you)-> Catalinbread Belle Epoch Deluxe (due to you)-> Empress Zoia (due to you) Thank you for all the videos and giving a simple and concise way to understand pedals! Great video!! I LOVE running two amps 😭 Currently run my 1x12 Princeton in tandem with a dirty AC15.....Strymon Deco for that "3D" tape flange/chorus makes the rig come alive, everything sounds better through two amps.

I just want to say thank you. Without TPS I would never have bought my 5E7 Bandmaster and had the experience of volume. Also I thoroughly enjoy the rabbit holes and tangents. I've learned more from your show than anywhere else. Beside the great gear, the ideas you share are priceless. 73 from Seattle.

Oh yes, the archetypal ‘Post-punk’ guitar tone. Used to use it in recording, but without two amps- recording the same part one guitar clean, one dirty and panned hard right and left. Now I have a Mesa Lone Star (clean) and a Mesa TA30 (dirt-ier) sounds amazing.

Dan’s playing on that opening bit was epic. I heard it come on whilst I wasn’t looking at the screen and expected to see a certain Mr AT sitting there when I eventually looked up, and it was Dan. Very excellently awesome.

My Radial ABY box was the best thing ever , intended on using it to use one amp at a time and switch when needed but ended up quickly discovering the HUGE textured sounds of BOTH TOGETHER. At the time in my band it was a dirty Marshall Jcm2000 and a fender twin reverb slightly pushed , got compliments all the time on live tone. I have different amps now but I sure do love to blend them with that ABY, try this if you can, vox ac15 with tremolo running and slightly louder than another amp in my case Orange rocker 15 that's mid scooped and low-med gain , awesome sounds when tat tremolo cuts in and out of that solid signal
