Probably about a year and a half here but absolutely same story. Playing for two decades and I was in such a rut with my playing ability and tone. Nothing about picking up the guitar was inspiring at all anymore. Fast forward to today and I’m absolutely loving my tone and it’s caused me to break through a wall with my ability and fretboard knowledge as well! I’m playing for hours multiple times a week and literally lose myself in the sound every time! Massive thanks to D&M and also a fair amount of love to the leg ends in the Facebook group! ❤️🤘

Cool video guys! The true W/D/W rigs sure are glorious! Thanks for making this video to help evangelize this approach! Around 11:00 I would say the more common way than the mic'd dry amp feeding a mic pre and then the wet processing effects, was instead, using a Line Out Box or having a line out built into the amplifier. The line out was a line level output tapped off the output transformer with a volume control to attenuate the level to match up with the effects it was feeding, this is different from an FX Loop Send (or preamp output). The Line Out is what Steve Lukather, Paul Jackson Jr., Jay Graydon and others did with their Rivera Modded "Stage II" or "Stage III" Fender amplifiers. They did often have buffered effects loops added as a part of the mod, but for the Wet/Dry/Wet thing would use the line out and either load the Rivera amp with a resistive load (if they didn't want to mic the dry amp speaker) and then feed their stereo effects to a stereo power amp and then wet cabinets (and just have two cabs on stage with the dry and wet in both cabs) or they would mic the dry amp and feed the wet processing effects via the line out that were all in a stereo parallel mixer (except for chorus, compression, and maybe EQ), that would feed a stereo power amp and wet cabinets for L and R.

A working-mans version of the OG wet-dry-wet is to use a solid state stereo combo like Roland KC-220 / KC-990 to run your stereo wet signal. Your wet signal doesn't need a pair of boutique guitar amps. No guitar tech required LOL. Just have the house take the DI L/R out of the KC and hard pan them and your done. Run the DI into an Iridium cab sim if you need that depth. You can stack the KC-220 on top of your combo amp, or put the combo amp on top of the KC-990 to get the Left-Center-Right effect.

That is the most amazing take on the 80's rig ever. What is most shocking is that even with that much kit, it is pretty simple compared to all that wild rack stuff we had. Remains impractical as ever, but so amazing and so fun. Great playing, too. Lovely stuff.

Thank you for this episode! I've been exploring variations of wet-dry over the last decade, so I was really interested to see and hear your demonstrations. I agree that for gigs a smaller footprint and straightforward setup for yourself and sound engineers is the way to go. My guitar is a Telecaster, but my main instrument of performance is an electric viola; I began experimenting because I wanted to maintain the viola tone, bow articulation response and clarity that I was already getting, and then be able to add and control the effected sounds separately. I've used one amp with parallel volume pedals - one dry the other 100% wet, two amps with the parallel volume pedals but the wet with some original sound (basically the TPS format) , two amps in series where the second amp is wet, and three amps set up wet-dry-wet with the outer amps in stereo. My basic wet is reverb - sometimes just the reverb on one of the amps, other times a reverb pedal with a big 0-100% range of level, tone, and length. I like smooth resonant plate or hall reverb sounds, and following that with a really slow OTA phaser, usually with both at subtle settings, but sometimes huge for what I call the "space viola" sound.

Glad you made this! Multiple ways to achieve the same goal, but I think Bob Bradshaw and 80’s session players would disagree with your version of “wet/dry”. Full disclosure I have used your approach for years and I simplify it to “wet/dry” instead of dual mono for ease much in the same way guitar players call the whammy bar “tremolo” instead of vibrato. True wet/dry is beyond the average guitarist but is cool as hell for certain situations. I think the dual mono version of wet/dry that you use is more accessible and flexible for the average guitarist. I have found amazing uses for mono, stereo, wet/dry and dual mono with time based effects going to one amp only for various situations.

I have used WDW rigs for over two decades. I can vouch for the struggle of dealing with Sound-people. Many don’t even understand why a guitar would be stereo, let alone more than stereo. I put that on them! That said, a WDW doesn’t have to be gigantic: three vertical 2x12s; or three 1x12s. There are many tiny power amps on the market, and all you need to get spread is a stereo delay or a stereo modulation pedal (or ideally, both). I used three 2x12s for years, it’s not that large, or heavy, sounds punchy and massive (like a 6x12) when dry, and a wide & lush when the three signals are on. All it took was an Eventide Timefactor and a TC Corona. Everything else can go in front of the amp - as you would with any setup. Granted it is best for a power trio set-up or whenever there isn’t another guitar player.

But you can run a full Wet/Dry rig as well with only one dry amp and one wet cab. It doesn’t have to be stereo wet effects. The best way to do it is tapped off the speaker out with like a Suhr ISO Line Out so you’re getting the full dry amps power section as well with a variable line level control. This is how Bob Bradshaw does it (albeit with his own line out box). Then you run it into something like a Musicom Lab Paralelizer or even the RJM PBC 10 switcher which has a built in stereo parallel line mixer that you can turn on/off the dry signal at any time. From there hit a mono power amp and into a wet cab. And this is all on a pedalboard with only the addition of the parallel line mixer of your choice. Does not have to be a giant rack unit to get a full wet/dry rig.

I experimented this for a while, used three Quilter ToneBlock 202's for amps. And then three cabinets, two sealed RedBack 1x12's for left and right (wet) and the center (dry) was loaded with 2x12 creambacks. Various effects processors, pedals and so on, it sounded best with at least 4-6 feet separation between the cabinets which is not an option for most stages when you figure in 2 guitars, bass player and drums. just not enough room. The Quilters made it easy to tweak, reasonable cost and lightweight, also worth noting with the left and right in open back cabinets I had some really weird phase issues I can only attribute to room reflections using sealed cabinets for the wet really improved the imaging and "depth". 100% not practical for at home, but was fun to play with when I had all the equipment on hand. Thanks for all the videos!

I know this isnt Wet/Dry related, but the mixer on the board is related. U guys should do an episode on using a mixer to blend parallel chains and how that can expand your tonal palette. Maybe even explain the differences, benefits, and downsides between active and passive resistance mixers. I recently decided to add a mixer (DOD 240 Resistance Mixer) in order to blend clean signal back into my dirty signal, and oh boy, it is amazing. Im shocked on how such a simple thing can open up a massive world of possibilities. I have a Boss Eq-200 before my gain section that splits my dry signal to the mixer and having that blend option and the eq to shape frequencies before the dirt pedals without eq'ing my dry signal allows a plethora of tonal options that weren't possible before with the same handful of pedals. Using a passive resistance mixer does have some volume drop when turning one channel down, but having a boost after it (return back to Mesa Highwire) fixes that problem for me, but an active mixer would fix that problem more efficiently. I would really love to see TPS's approach to this topic in a future episode, see what type of sounds u can pull out of it, and teach us pedal nerds more about pedal mixers.

Great video TPS! One of the clearest episodes yet. Just a few questions: - When do & don't you need a line out box? - Does a splitter always put the effects on the other side into parallel? - Regarding the 2nd diagram/method, why was the signal routed to the input of the 2 amps and not in the effects loop? Thanks!

I run a split post-drive pedals. Dry signal goes to a Hi-Tone DG50 in the middle. The wet signal eventually splits into 6 lines that get remixed into 2 outputs that go to a Two-Rock Bloomfield Drive on the left and a Victory V40 Deluxe on the right, all 3 amps sitting on vertical 2x12 cabs. For the wet effects, a Harmonius Monk gets split to dual-mono, a Free The Tone Future Factory into L-R stereo delay, and a Source Audio Ventris into L-R stereo reverb, all run in parallel. I run the wet amps at around 69% wet mix. Definitely not a gigging rig... it's purely a piss-the-neighbors-off rig. The biggest challenge I have is balancing levels between the 3 amps, but once it's dialed in, it's epic. Many thanks to you guys for the knowledge and motivation to put this together. Curses to you guys for the money I've spent! Just kidding... keep up the great work!

You make a point I was bringing up on another thread - that all this wet/dry fuss originated as a studio technique. My point was I believe it gets lost to some degree in a live setting - unless you utilize the left/right PA speakers for a wide even spread over your audience. Otherwise unless you happen to be right in front of the guitar player - your not going to get the beautiful wash of sound thats somewhat ‘fooling’ everybody listening to KZbin videos > which are actually very controlled recordings > bringing us back to our first point > studio recording!

I think that I need Mick ... to come over and twist knobs for me. Wonderful examples....and those tones can become so inspiring to the moment! Great job. Wet-dry-wet is perfect for studio stuff. The TPS wet-dry is what I would be using live...and often, even for recording. They both have their place. The wet-dry-wet can indeed sound majestic.... MASSIVE .... and absolutely beautiful when tweaked for amazing stereo effect! Love them both for their individual high points.

I’m really loving that big headstock 70’s Stratocaster! Maybe it was the enormous amount of tones in this video, but I have completely changed my mind about 70’s Stratocasters from this video!

Hello Arnold, Mick here! If you get a chance, watch the recent video we did with Aynsley Lister. A bunch of 70s Strats and quite possibly the best Strat tones we’ve ever had on the show! Cheers!

Wow. This was one of the best sounding episodes ever! Mick, I don't know how you let the waterfall be on the green knobs of the mixer and the Topanga on the blue. The visual mismatch was driving me crazy, haha. The wet/dry/wet sounded epic, but I'm glad TPS wet/dry sounds nearly as good. I've built a Trainwreck Express clone, and just ordered parts to build a Trainwreck Rocket clone. The Express will be my dry amp, the Rocket wet, and they will be split in a 2x12. All because of you guys and the mass amount of knowledge you have let loose over the years. Thanks, guys!

One of my favorite way to set up wet/dry/wet is to use an expression pedal to control volumes of both wet and dry but in a cross fader fashion. Heal down wet, toe down dry and all the mixes in between.

Exactly same for my new pboard just built. Use a mission volume, an expression, on both delay, reverb, and chorus. The board is purpose built and runs stereo into two Vox AC15C1's.

Epic show! Amazing playing !! And you know ... I think you guys have come up with an incredible improvement over the "original wet/dry/wet/whatever". After attending That Pedal University for a couple of years, here is how I have applied my learning to my budget. Guitar > Polytune 3 > Radial BigShot ABY > B Out to Blackstar HT-5R (either Clean or Dirty channel with Reverb on a bit) > A Out to TC Electronic HyperGravity > Nobels ODR-mini > Tumnus Deluxe > Boss CE-2 (which I've had for nearly 40 years) > Flashback II > Keeley Verb-o-Trem > MXR Classic Overdrive > MXR 10 Band EQ > Katana 50 MkII (usually clean but I can use Flanger or Phaser.) Mick would say that there will be latency causing phase problems but I can't hear it at apartment levels. Flipping the Phase switch on the BigShot sometimes makes a small difference but usually I don't hear any difference.

Fantastic episode. (Currently halfway through) I’d have loved to see a micro pitch shift in there as well, for the Landeau and EVH sounds. The chorus is wide, but the slight detune takes it to the next level! I think i’m going to put this together with my G-Major 2 and Stereo 2:90 for the Wet channels and everything I’ve currently got for dry.

Hi Dan & Mick, Fantastic show as usual. Been following the Wet & Dry journey and this show really opened everything up to a new clarity ... On a side note, I noticed you used a single output (A) on the FF-1Y on the final board but had the delay set to Stereo. Even though you are going into one (mono) amp it is still possible to utilise both A&B channels of the delay using a 1/4 in TSF to Dual 1/4 in TS cable turning a stereo signal to a mono signal, so allowing the use of both series and stereo delay signals to further and double your delay effect options.. obviously you don't get stereo delay output from one amp but it does offer an extra delay/signal in mono. .. I have A&B outputs of the FF-1Y going into a Ditto Stereo Looper, with a stereo to mono output (Y- cable) going to a mono reverb or direct to amp. Of course you may already now this. :) Great show !!
@ThatPedalShow2 жыл бұрын
Hello Gaz. You might have spotted I changed it from stereo to series. The latter definitely works mono and I’m not sure of the former sums to mono. Should check that! Mick here. :0)

I had a ABY split to two combo amps and one I ran a delay and Looper (the louder one) solid state 2-12" 120WRMS that had a decent reverb built in. I left the Dry 12" with reverb off and ran quite a bit harder into breakup. Wide stereo the thing was perfect. Just not something I could rationalize keeping. I still run multiple parallel inputs but with a single Keyboard amp. KBA 50 3 Inputs and a loop. I still run the ABY but I've been using a MICROCUBE gx also with my Focusrite and monitors sometimes.. one bass I have three outputs mudbucker P and Double J.. An acoustic with Piezo UST-SBT and a dual rail humbucker with Series Parallel.. Sometimes out comes the Firepod just to get enough inputs

I use a Vox AC15 as my main amp, dry-ish. But I do use a touch of the on-board spring reverb, and the tremelo when I want it. And then have two old Vox Pathfinder 15Rs for stereo wet. No effects loop in any of the Vox amps. But I can use the Pathfinders as my Wet-Wet stereo amps. I tend to play pretty clean, just a touch of MXR Timmy to fatten. Then EHX Hot Tubes for a bit of dynamic grit/hair/dirt. For the music I love to play, I love to build up stereo soundscapes. And I wouldn't want to lose out on the lovely stereo pedals for chorus, granular, delay, and reverb. So I split it there after the Hot Tubes. One feed goes mono Dry-ish to Vox AC15 center channel. The other split feed goes to TC Electronic SCF+. After that, it's stereo for the L-R Wet-Wet signal path. SCF+ Into Chase Bliss Mood mk.II, SOMA Labs Cosmos. Then finally UA FX Del-Verb. It's more towards wet-dry-wet. But, it takes on some aspects of the TPS Wet-Dry, in that, the stereo effects are in series, not parallel. And I don't use loads of volume pedals/controllers. It's a studio setup, not for live. So I I just use the built in volume controls on the pedals, and amps. The two Pathfinders are nice and small. And sound similar enough, but nicely high pass out the muddiest lows for the reverb. The Pathfinder pair is plenty loud enough for wet in the studio. I like how they look like a little Vox trio too, with AC15 front and center, and raised off floor. And the two Pathfinder sidemen, just behind, on the floor, and closer to wall. For re-inforcement of the smaller cab/speakers bass. Only issue is cumulative volume. Would like to try a pair of AC4s as the wet-wet amps, and a Weber mini-mass on the AC15.
