Can you please make a video over the flowers and plants you have in your flowerbeds? I’m trying to get some good landscaping going and need some ideas. Also located in Arkansas

Central Texas here. My zoysia is still green and it's now a few days after Christmas. Bought a verticutter woth a large discount and looking forward to the April scalp and verticut. The lawn needs to be thinned out as it really took off last summer since i added biostims.

Know you grass! This is my #1 tip and forever will be. Not knowing about cool vs warm season grass is what made my lawn awful until last year. Learning about grass types and surprisingly discovering I had a near full common Bermuda lawn (in an area not generally associated with) was what changed everything. Depending on where you live yes you can probably get a good idea of what grass you have, but you never know if your microclimate (7B for me) might change all that! The rest is history! Then the cultural practices make so much more sense. Thanks for all your advice!

Could have scalped a month ago, but life gets in the way. Issues with the house and surgery kept me out of the yard, and weeds grew up a couple feet! No worries though, did a high mow last week and a kind of scalp this weekend. Green up slow this year, but it's ok. Once it does, it will stay till mid November. Really just need to fill in some weird spots still... Central AZ over 4500 ft

I always mow my hybrid Bermudagrass (I'm in zone 6b-7a-ish) using the lowest setting on my push-behind mower.. In my experience, if you train the grass this way, you essentially don't accumulate as much thatch and debris and therefore won't need to scalp. Of course, an important consideration for cutting the grass so short is having a flat lawn.

How many guys/gals buy a house with .5, .75, or 1+ acres of lawn, and then realize scalping is some seriously hard work! (I have taken multiple pickup loads off my lawn before.) It's not mandatory, but it's helpful if you can manage it!

Indeed. 👍👍 appreciate ya watching and chiming in!

Next year take it down to the next to last full scalp while it's still dormant. That way it will have some protection from the last frost. Then take it on down with the final scalp. It's less work over time instead of a 2-3 day overhaul of grass clippings.
@BudgetLawns8 ай бұрын
It’s not even a full day deal for me to do it all at once. I just wait until close to my lost frost/freeze date of April 15. Did it on the 13 this year with no freezing temps in the long range forecast. But Mother Nature decided to drop a low of around 40 to 33 just 8 days after the scalp. Oh well. That’s what makes lawn care fun. Do it and deal with it. Thanks for watching and the feedback.

Hey Travis in that one video you showed putting out some owl decoys to deter some birds were those birds the ones that like to build those mud nests under the freeway overpasses??? I have some back this year mudding up my side porch trying to build a nest on top of my porch light 🤣

@BudgetLawns8 ай бұрын
Haha, no doubt. First time I've masked up. Been stubborn every other year. Not anymore. I don't mind the birds in the lawn. They're free insect control. I've got a big owl on the back patio and just put these 2 up front. They're to keep the birds from trying to build nests. They've been trying in the wreath on the front door, on the back patio tv and even on the ceiling fan. On cooler nights, they huddle up close to the bricks to get warm. I'm tired of 'em crapping all over the place. I've had the one big owl for years and it has always worked. Thought I'd up my arsenal. Appreciate ya watching and commenting!

I have Kentucky blue grass, cold zone last freeze day around May20. Local fertilizing companies have already been in the neighborhood grass is beginning to grow. Do I skip scalping and just rake and fertilize in a few weeks? Is there any benefit in my zone to scalp?

Kentucky bluegrass is not a grass that needs scalping. I would just fertilize and mow this time of year. Thanks for watching.
