Thanks for covering one of the best swings in golf. DD unfortunately had back and other issues but he was the.man back in the day. Absolute control of the ball.

I needed this !! 6th year golfing now, each coach wanted to change my grip but what I needed is this

I absolutely love this swing and it feels really great for me. I actually get more shaft lean and compression utilising this swing. The grip has a direct correlation with how open your hips are at impact hence why David required a strong grip.

Key is to be wide open at impact while maintaining your spine angle. Do that and you can swing as hard as you like and the ball will go straight. It simply cannot go left as what causes the ball to go left is a chest that stops rotating at impact allowing the hands to overtake. Great video and DD is the man

Spine angle changes a ton. At impact he probably close to having extension of spine and a lot of right tilt.

I think as a "feel" and a range session...People would benefit practicing turning open like Duval...It's really helped me finish my swing with my "normal" swing.

Love this video. I'm back playing after a long winter layoff. This is by far the one that's simplified my swing so much that I don't think so much about swinging. I also let's me freewheel on my turn which gets my blasted left hip out of the way and then just throw the "screw ball" as you say. I find myself finishing in a much better position and on balance. This is a great way to avoid hooking the ball too which had me in fits before. Too bad Duval had so many health problems eventually, it would have been nice to see him challenge Tiger more. Keep up the great work Steve keep that content coming!

I really appreciate your observation about how even though he played an unblievably strong grip that tended to shut the face, he still released the club aggressively!!! It seems counterintuitive in that most people would say he'd have to have held off the release to avoid smother hooking everything. But I think you're spot on -- he really did screw ball it or karate chop it releasing the right pinky finger in the lead (flapping with the rt underside forearm staying pointed to the sky). It is a totally different kind of release but one I'm partial to because for some reason I have always naturally taken a strong grip with a tendency to shut the face. But when I'm grooving it -- I am absolutely releasing the club aggressively with the rt pinky finger leading the way

Good points. David was throwing the club left as soon as he could. If he chased down the line too much he could cook it. I've been trying to swing like him for the last two years. Or at least implementing some of the ideas. Players with more rotation tend to be more accurate than those who play down the line or a bit more vertical.

Some of my best drives feel like I’m wide open at impact. I really don’t know why it happens occasionally but I can’t seem to repeat it intentionally. Something else to work on……

Fascinating. I remember Duvall's streak and his fall. He walked like a penguin too but ideas worth thinking about when you don't have much of a backswing!

Hard to figure out how Duval compensated for the lost club head momentum from having the palm up rather than the thumb. Maybe his fast hips did the work.

Simple. Look at his hip flexion. It's well over 180*.. almost 270*

He generated incredible speed and power down through the ball path. Clearing the hips caused his left shoulder to pull down and through the swing plane. This X factor tension is huge in his swing. I actually imitate his swing….only swing style that works for me.

You wouldn't want a grip that strong since you don't rotate well.
