I disagree. I think we all have a pre-concieved notion on what a wasteland would look like, thinking it'd be a desert rather than nature reclaiming the world. A nuclear wasteland in the Mojave is going to look like a wasteland in the Mojave. A nuclear wasteland in wherever fallout 4 is located would look like where it is. It's not a "theme park gone wrong" imo. I feel like it fits, you get a helicopter ride to the Prydwen early on in the story and you can see how truly fucked up the entire place is from a different angle.

Although I'd prefer 3 and NV over 4, when suggesting how to start the FO series for people coming over from the TV SHOW, I would definitely suggest 4. Not because it's "more similar" but mainly because 4's the easiest to just start playing, most fallout players are desensitized and don't notice anymore but for an average person who plays games sometimes, the amount of modding one has to do to have a smooth experience in games like FO3 and NV are ridiculous in comparison to playing something like Sims or Madden. Simply installing a mod from nexus or just opening the Nvidia control panel to externally limit frames within a game or editing config files with NP++ aren't just things someone who learned about FALLOUT for the first time from an amazon show can do within 2 clicks. Just imagine the scenario of explaining to some girl at class the process of signing up to nexus, installing vortex, finding the nvidia control panel, navigating to the game's root folder, finding %appdata%, installing 7 different fix mods, adjusting load order, bla bla bla, bla, bla bla bla bla bla! That's what you look like when you pretentiously say "FALLOUT 3 BEST" to any and every statement about a fallout game.

Went back to do 1, 2, and then got New Vegas and had an immensely more fun time. There was a specific theme of trying to survive and move on in the ruined world. FO4 felt more like a kooky theme park of randomness and people making questionable choices all throughout. It did a terrible job showing people trying to move on and rebuild as everybody seemed to purposely stay stuck and stagnant in the world.

my issue with 4 and 76 is the atmosphere, it doesn't reflect the wasteland like in 1,2,3,NV where its bleak and a struggle to survive with small patches of people just trying to make the world a better place and some quirky humour alongside that, with 4 and 76 it's more optimistic colourful wasteland with whimsical super mutants and "I'm a merc with a heart of gold" type companions with some NPCs having the same kind of morality as people just out of a vault (followers of the apocalypse don't count because their not blind to the fact the world is horrific which is why you often see them in areas where its most bleak to balance out the optimism with an overwhelming sense of despair) at the end of the day I agree 4 is easier to get into but 1,2,3,NV are probably the best examples of what the wasteland should feel like, a bleak struggle with tragically horrific mutants, raiders and a deadly environment.
@justincary48036 ай бұрын
The way I look at it is it don't matter which one you play first but you should watch some gameplay and lore on 1,2,3, and NV so then you as a new player can understand why us old fans prefer the older stuff more then fallout 4. My personal biggest problem with fallout 4 is the weapons whoever made them I feel like just doesn't know anything about guns. New Vegas probably had the best weapon run and closest in the entire franchise to reality and sci-fi reality.

My issue with recomending 4 to first time players is the intro, its a great introduction but it misses in setting the right tone. The only hints of how messed up the word in that intro are the optional terminals, if they didnt read the overseers terminal, a fresh can player could leave that vault thinking vault tech honestly tried their best. You world you exit into doesn't seem that bad, the first thing you do is meet the minute men and help them rebuild. By the end of that intro sequence, you've entered a bright and colourful world, met some good people fixing things and you've got a big set of power armour to fight anything scary, The world seems dangerous but hopeful, even dimond city, your first major settlement, seems to doing ok for themselves. Compare that to 3 where you grow in the vault, with hints of resources being scarce at your birthday and then all the blatant indoctrination from the overseer, you get some humour when taking the goat and when everything goes to hell, it can play out a bunch of different ways immediately highlighting the freedom of choice. When you are able to escape the vault it's ts into a completely barren wasteland, unlike 4 the world your first introduced to in 3 doesn't look like it's recovering anytime soon. Even the first settlement adds to this, on the surface dimond city from 4 looks ok, but megaton on its surface has an unexploded nuke sitting right out in the open. All of this comes together to act as a much better grounding and first impression for what the fallout franchise is. Of course 4 has its all the clasic fallout themes later on, and 3 definitely has its hopefull moments of rebuilding, both games tell those stories, I'm only talking about the introduction and first impressions, which is why I usually recommend 3 over any others as a first game.

Fallout 4 and 76 are misrepresentations of what the fallout franchise is. Tim Cain said when he was making fallout “ I want to explore the world and more of the ethics of a post nuclear world, not to make a better plasma gun”. Fallout has been diluted to power armor and the vault boy. And the games have been diluted into looter shooters and mediocre ones at that. The illusion of choice, interesting and dumb factions, ret cons and lore breaks, are why someone shouldn’t start with 4. But because of the show’s popularity, people immediately flock to 4 and 76. As someone who loves too many franchises, I would personally recommend fallout 4 first, the issue with fans of a franchise is we already know the lore, context and nuances of a franchise, a new person looking to join not so much, so experiences that seem clunky might already be enough to dissuade people who might have been potential fans. I mean we want to put the most approachable experience possible for new fans, it’s why with mass effect, before the legendary collection if jumping in, Mass effect 1 is clunky but if you tell someone to jump in from mass effect 2 or 3 and they are hooked on the game’s lore and universe, they would play the first game, this was the case for me for mass effect. But also Star Trek, if you show someone the original series it is very tacky, verses something like enterprise. And we see that the same translates to fallout, 4 is far more approachable from a mainstream perspective, overall gunplay is smoother and less clumsy, rpg side took a hit but 4 being this way allows people to get intrigued by the lore and want to know more

FNV is still better to play or start with than F4. FNV has mods just like F4 does. There are multiple animation mods, gun mods, armor mods that make the game more immersive and expansive. There is even tales of two wastelands that allows you to merge FNV with F3 and play both games seemlessly with the same character on the same save file. I think that's the ultimate way to play. There is no jank in FNV. The graphics are old yes, but the gameplay holds up easily. If gameplay is what you're looking for FNV is miles better than F4.

Well the show is modelled after FO4 so fans of the show should enjoy it. Its the exact same vibe as the show. But people that saw the show and thought "why the hell did this get such great reviews, the plot makes zero sense" then they should play New Vegas. FO4 gets a lot of well deserved hate. The creator of the video talks about how entertaining the game is, while conceding that the plot is bare bones and basically admits that the story is kinda lame. Every FO4 fan says the same thing "well I found it fun", which is fair enough, but entertainment factor and craftsmanship are 2 separate factors in critiquing any form of media. Fallout 4 is an entertaining game, and as a console player I've enjoyed modding in cute girls, 40mm grenade launchers and superjumps. It's fun. But its not really a great game. Its a solid 7 at best, I give it a 6 after binging New Vegas for the last month after hatewatching the show lmao. FO3 fans are somehow lumped in with FNV which is not really the case as FO3 suffers from many of the same writing issues and contrivances which arent a problem for many but its a big enough issue for many to really dislike the game even after liking it at some point initially. FO4's biggest issues: -style over substance -characters not fleshed out. Like they wanted to have their cake and eat it too with Nate. It's not an issue of him being voiced, he's simply not well developed, likewise with Nora and Father and every single faction. Just look at Shepherd from Mass Effect, people really appreciate the first 2 games in that series and even the third to an extent. -dropping karma, reputation, ammo types, weapon condition -settlements are cool but when your only option for residents are a couple named NPCs and companions, with everyone else being nameless. Its so dumb. Like you could at least give the generic citizens some name like George or something. -no meaningful choices -instant dog and robot companion, power armor and minigun reviewbait - radiant quests are garbage tier, next up will be AI generated quests and dialogue - pipe weapons were too cool to be so weak, so sad - generic enemies, too many of them. - no consistency with original lore - yes, yes (sarcastic), question, no (yes) -scaling of course -there's like 3 actual towns with people to talk to in vanilla Overrall there's a lot to dislike about the game if you think about, doesnt mean you can't find it entertaining. And that's not even accounting for the minor details, like robot butlers equipped with sawblades and a flamethrower taking care of a baby, the nuke scene with a Nuke that is most definitely way too close, Prydwen making zero sense and not even attempting to explain it.

@@theAlchemyst11 no one is hating on you for enjoying FO4 or whatever game you want to play. A game can be fun and entertaining while being well crafted and cohesive at the same time. That's not too much to expect from a company as big as Bethesda. And in the case of Fallout it is twice as expected, considering that they want to call their games the 3rd and 4th instalments of the Fallout RPG series and not fundamentally different games. Fallout was a well crafted RPG experience with a profound story. The Bethesda versions throw all of this away for a much simpler and less meaningful experience. And is that okay for you? Yeah why not, the game is fun. Fallout 3 was amazing when it came out, so was FO4. But the game is not Fallout. But it came at the cost of what could have been a much more cohesive and well crafted experience, gameplay and narrative-wise. So the question isn't if you would rather play a good game with a bad story or a bad game with a good story, the question is why can't we have good games with good stories.

In fact only Fallout Shelter and Fallout Tactics had a smaller increase in players than Fallout 4 (still over 150%). Every single Fallout game is sky rocketed especially the older titles. Some fans are just angry nostalgics that say cliche things like "back in my day x thing was better than current thing!" It's just annoying. And the Fallout 3/NV fanbois fail to see that they AREN'T the old fans. The really old fans are from No Mutants Allowed - fans from back in the 90s that are angry since Fallout Tactics (2001). They were fed up BEFORE Bethesda even thought of acquiring the franchise. Some of them are even angry at Tim Cain himself - you know the literal creator of Fallout. But somehow those Fallout 3 fans act now as if they were the old fans and everyone else is a "normie". It's ridiculous. 4 suffers from feeling like it’s older than it actually is. 3 has issues, quite a few, but it’s aesthetically consistent with old fallout, as is NV. But 4….3 and NV had “tactical reloads” which 4 somehow lacks despite them being a thing for almost, if not longer than a decade at that point. The weapon animations are also an abortion. I cannot play vanilla 4, it’s that bad for me. Maybe I’m just being autistic about it, idk, but compared to games that came out around the same time as 4? Yeah, it’s somehow dated the moment it released. There’s also the guns, and the baffling shit around them that again, is fixed by Modders. The models are….meh at best, and Bethesda completely ignored the fact that fallout has tended to use fallout versions of irl guns with a few fallout unique weapons. And on top of that, there isn’t a single proper unique which is sad. 3 and NV had some cool weapons. I could go on about lore consistency, the terrible plot, having some of the worst side quests in the entire franchise, yes, including the original games by interplay, wasted factions, making power armour too common and easy to acquire, making deathclaws a fucking joke, etc, etc, etc.

Yeah, this warning is a couple of years too late for me... 😁 Most TV newcomers will be well at ease with FO4 IMO - they will recognise all sorts of stuff from watching the show and the game itself won't seem too primitive to them (especially if they dip into mods). I actually think it is perfect for the noobaloos!

The fallout and elder scrolls franchise are made so that u can basically start with any one of them as a new player, (new player friendly) cuz there’s no run on story that continues from fallout 3 or fallout NV, it is its own story in every game, that’s what I like about these games, but in my opinion fallout 76 is the best start if you’re into that style of game and wanna play with friends, but it’s good if u wanna play a game that takes place way before fallout 1, 25 years after the bombs, as a kid I started playing fallout 3 and fallout NV and all of them are great to get into the franchise

1, 2, and New Vegas are all continuations of the same themes and stories. It's only the Bethesda titles that forego that.

Gonna add my two cents: I played fallout 4, New Vegas, and 3, in that order. Fallout 4 is my favorite. Not because it's a particularly good RPG. Or a particularly good shooter. But because it's fun. I liked New Vegas, but the game kept crashing every hour to 30 minutes. Yes, mods exist. Yes, I know how to use them. I can look past the crashing though. I like New Vegas' base game. I enjoyed the Sierra Madre and Honest Hearts DLC. Hated Old World Blues. I didn't like the repairing mechanics. Wasn't a fan of the Power Armor. Didn't particularly enjoy any of the factions. I liked the freedom the game offered though. Overall, solid game, not my favorite. Hated fallout 3. Main Protagonist felt whiny and it lacked the QoL changes New Vegas made like being able to repair with any weapon of the same type instead of needing the exact weapon you currently were using in order to repair it. Too much walking. Too much green. Didn't like any of the DLCs. Fallout 4, gunplay is solid. Gameplay is solid overall. I like the power armor design since it's how Power Armor should look in a game. I didn't like how overpowered the power armor was and I don't like gathering resources to repair it, so I often don't opt to use it. Brotherhood of steel are badass. Minutemen suck (That's why I always opt to become a raider). Settlement building sucks unless you dupe resources. (Which I do.) RPG mechanics are decent, and, although this is personal preference, game isn't as raunchy as the previous fallout games, which I appreciate. I also enjoyed all of the DLCs, which I can't say the same for previous fallout games. TLDR: New Vegas was alright. Didn't like Fallout 3. I always feel up to playing Fallout 4.

@CakeScented Blame Bethesda for using a gaming engine from 1997. Obsidian had to work with Bethesda's laziness and bullshit, plus they were only given a year and a half to make the game. The game mechanics are awful, but the RPG elements have surpassed any 3D Fallout game since it came out.

I agree, and it’s jackasses like Creetosis that sway the minds of every viewer to play this game only and not that one! Like where’s the fun in that? People like those KZbinrs ruin the authentic and bias perspective of video games in the first place. Yeah sure F3 and F4 have flaws, but they still have fun and enjoyable moments. While New Vegas was one pure golden luck and caught on by the community.

Fallout fans are some of the most annoying fans in gaming. They eat each other up because they cant get along because their game has to be the superior one. Each Fallout game is great, but their pros and cons are so drastically different. This is why they ride their preferred fallout because their glasses are so rose tinted, they can't accept the fact there are just other games that do better where theirs fall flat. Fallout 3 has some of the best, down to Earth, gritty atmosphere with excellent story driven DLC. Fallout New Vegas has the best setting, and the most enriched writing compared to the other two games. Fallout 4 has the best gameplay by far, and offers more to do in the wasteland besides quests. Quite frankly, it doesn't matter which Fallout you start with as long as you know what the other games provide.

Fo4 will always be my favorite, I don't care about "the story", "the lore", or "the accuracy". I goof around and have a blast blowing peoples faces away or creating elaborate death guanntlets for my settlers to walk through every night to go to bed. Or exploding litterally anything or causing the most amount of damage I possibly can in the shortest amount of time, which usually translates to "accuracy by volume of fire / heavy weapons". I love heavy weapons in Fo76. They're just the best, along with the construction PA with ammo/weapon weight ruducing perks and 150 pounds of stimpacks.

@AmyCherryLMAO It's not about creative momentum imo, it's that they've gotten stagnant in their neverending quest to onboard new players. We've now had 3 Bethesda titles in a row (4 if you include the show) that are fish out of water stories about a vault dweller saving the wasteland with the Brotherhood of Steel, because they have to hit all the iCoNiC notes like vaults and power armor or the newcomers won't understand what's happening. It's not that they forgot how to advance a story, they're just afraid of doing it and scaring people off.
