This is one of my favorite episodes for so many reasons but one of the scenes I love most is when Buffy brings Joyce and Dawn to Spike's crypt, I adore the relationship between Spike and Joyce 💖

This is why, in Dracula, it was very important to distinguish between Buffy needing Giles back as her watcher. But he was NEVER reinstated. Until now. Paid Retroactively!

Interesting you said that Spike is becoming a watcher, if you remember in Restless, there was a scene where they were on the swing set and Spike said something like "I'm gonna be a watcher." This is one of my favorite episodes in the whole show. It looks like everyone is getting the upper hand on Buffy, but she is just soaking it all up and realizes SHE has always had the power.

I think Checkpoint contains one of the greatest scenes in the whole show when Buffy had the showdown with The Council. She just has no time for their stuck up English nonsense, and the arrogant Quentin Travers, and tells them who holds the real power. The sword throwing is excellent. We of course get the reveal about who Glory really is, and that this Big Bad is somewhat different from what they have faced before. S5 just gets better and better. A great feeling when Travers has to accept Buffy's terms.

The Watcher's Coucil is all about control. They came in-force to try and get control back over Buffy. Attacking Buffy's methods, her skills, her friends' abilities, using the threat to deport Giles, holding information about Glory that Buffy needs. Anything they could think of to try and get control back. After Buffy's encounter with Glory, she finally realised that she has the power, and she delivered the ultimate beat-down speech to the Watchers: Buffy: "There isn't going to be a review." Quentin: "Sorry?" Buffy: "No review. No interrogation. No questions you know I can't answer. No hoops. No jumps. And no interruptions. See, I've had a lot of people talking at me the last few days. Everyone just lining up to tell me how unimportant I am. And I finally figured out why. Power. I have it. They don't. This bothers them. Glory came to my home today." Giles: "Buffy, are you-" Buffy: "Just to talk. She told me I'm a bug, I'm a flea, she could squash me in a second. Only she didn't. She came into my home and we talked. We had what in her warped brain probably passes for a civilized conversation. Why? Because she needs something from me. Because I have power over her. You guys didn't come all the way from England to determine whether or not I was good enough to let back in. You came to beg me to let you back in."

I think this was the first supernatural series to introduce a god as a villain. Its fairly common nowadays so im not surprised you were able to guess that. I have been able to guess that for other series ever since this episode.

Just one thing why the hell wouldn't Buffy ask the watchers council for an actual salary as a slayer. So Giles gets to be paid but not Buffy that's still a WTF thing to me. It would make sense if slayers love and train with their watched and they pay their expenses but that's not the set up here. 🤷
