One of my favorite retelling of his invasion of Persia was a comparison to a boxing match between two new prodigies. Two growing empires, led by what was perceived as the two most prolific leaders and generals of their era, going head to head for the first time. And before the match, both sides are seen as having a chance of getting away with the W. Until the fight starts, and one fighter proves himself to be in a completely different category.

Omgosh! I found yr channel last night and began tearing through all the historical pieces of mostly real ppl beginning with Octavian (I hadn't gone all the way back to the start of your videos yet), but after going back and watching this here about badass GK, I am THRILLED that you pronounced the man's name correctly! As a student of ancient history myself, it always astonishes me that folks won't dig just a little deeper for what could seem like small details but really, saying the name of a HUGE personality from our past IS kinda important, like "JENGIST" Khan. His name begins with a J sound like "jet," and not a G as in "get." Same with my girl CleopaDRA Ptolemy VII. After attempting to learn Egyptian hieroglyphics in my youth, (& not succeeding at that time) I discovered that HER cartouche has a D and NOT a T. Her name was CleopaDRA, NOT CleopaTRA! Get it right people. On yes and her sister, whom she had murdered "Arsinoe?" This lady's name is pronounced "Ar sin no way," in the traditional Greek- Macedonian language rules, and not in bad, modern English as " Ar sin no. " Again, some details may seem small but getting a person's name right shouldn't be one of them, and especially notable people in our collective history. Am I right? Anyway, THANK you (50 times) for telling anyone who watches yr videos the correct way to say this great man's title! Now, onto the next video, oh and btw GREAT job on yr Artemis video! 👍 I feel sure that by the end of today, I'll be your newest sub. Rock on!!! 😀🤘 Sincerely (from Florida), Lady Aszneth @Briefed

Thank you for this beautiful comment. You know what - I didn’t know that about Kleopatra. It’s odd sometimes though because at times I will go with the wrong pronunciation even though I know it’s wrong simply because the name is too common. Zeus would be an example for that. Also in my Julius Caesar video I mispronounced his name. It’s tough but I do strive to get it right. What bothers me with real people is when it’s just entirely and utterly mispronounced with not a single thought given. To the point where you could never guess the spelling for how horribly it is pronounced
@lLadyAszneth9 ай бұрын
@@Briefed_Mythology - you're welcome B! I know mispronouncing a name or title can be tough at times, and especially if some folks have thick accents OR simply don't know. All that is forgivable. But doing ANY kind of research on an actual historical person? Yeah, go that few pages more OR some online linguistic help and get the name right. And yup! As for our Queen Ptolemy, it's true. Her cartouche has NO "T" where it should be, but a "D" instead and it's easy to research with zero dispute. But, folks are SO used to how her name has been pronounced over the ages, I'm guessing most folks don't know and probably not enough Archaeologists out there to correct the error. Until my next comment somewhere, rock on and take care. 😒👍 Aszneth "Asz" And yes, my own name is an ancient female name from Kemet. It's a slightly different spelling of the traditional name of "Asenath." Most notable as Joseph's wife. Jacobs Joseph that is. During my previous research, I'd discovered a couple different spellings so I'm glad mine is slightly different and from what I can tell would've be pronounced a bit differently than her name. As we all know, no one knows (sadly) what the language sounded like and all that verbiage in the Mummy films (with Brendan Fraser) was phonetic gibberish. Oh well, LOL!

Damn that was a good one bro. To be honest I'm riding with that man. His acceptance was something I wish the world would have taken to heart. Is it true he was a fan of magic? I believe to be truly great in this world you have to be open minded. Yet as Jordan Peterson said "you must also be a monster." And maybe this world wouldn't be in such a tragic tragic state if we just took a couple more lessons from this guy. It seemed that respect honor and loyalty mattered more than anything else, and today those are some of the rarest qualities we see in humans, everybody's always trying to f*** over the next person cut the next person's throat do anything they can to cut one person out and in reality if we stood next to each other loyal and honest the world would not be in shambles with idiots and horrible evil people running the world, into the ground. Much like Khan everybody is so quick to demonize people rather than learn from them. Last names. Not surnames, but a second name that both distinguishes them and makes them sound distinguished. It has nothing to do with “White Washing”. The world wouldn't see the military sophistication that the Mongols deployed on the battle field until Rommel in North Africa.

Genghis Khan never attacked anyone unprovoked. One might argue that he answered these provocations disproportionately, but he never just attacked anyone strictly for his own gain. It was always in response to a perceived dis. He also valued power over wealth, because, based on his observations, with power, one could always acquire wealth, but wealth could not buy you power (ah, the good old days…). Thusly, he left most of the plunder to his army, which made them happy, & loyal. LEGEND. ✌🏼

But then again he killed those genarals who wanted to save their cities and the people of those cities from his wrath.
