ADAC (Kind of a car insurcance in germany). I haven't drove a car regularly in 3 years and still I pay 70€ every year. I finally cancelled, but they have a policy that cancelling 3 months prior to payday doesn't count and will only get into affect in the next year. Literally harmful design against ADHD people😡

My last major ADHD tax was a $7000 fursuit that I'm not even sure that I want. Ouch. 😔 My upcoming ADHD tax that I have time to address is a plane ticket from my aunt's wedding in Arizona. This video reminded me to buy that plane ticket as soon as possible.

I had an active premium account to Second Life for 10 years ($10 p/month), yet only played it for 1 :( on the plus side a monthly stipend, meant I was able to withdraw some of the games currency when I finally closed my account meaning it wasn't all lost.

i'm thankful that i learned not to impulse buy, but it was a weird and roundabout lesson that i'm not sure can be replicated. one time, in my early twenties, i saw this really cool replica sword in a shop, and i really wanted it! but i couldn't afford it. it was "only" $150, but that was almost an entire week's pay for me at that time! so i asked the owner if he could hold it for me and i could come in and make payments on it. he agreed, and over the course of the next several months i was able to pay $10-20 every week. when i finally got the sword, i was super excited! and i showed it off to all my nerd friends when we met up that weekend. they all thought it was cool, and i was thriving off their excitement, but then after i showed it off, the dopamine IMMEDIATELY dropped away and i was left thinking "soo ummm, what am i supposed to do with this thing now?" i'm pretty sure that moment hard rewired my brain, because ever since then, i have been almost *overly* cautious before buying something. if i see something that i really want, i think "okay, what am i going to actually do with this once i buy it? will i use/display it? or am i going to take it out one time and then have it sit in its box forever like the sword in my basement?"

I don't know if I have autism, but I'm very convinced that I have ADHD and maybe a minor degree of OCD or something similar. I keep saying I want to find a psychiatrist to make some progress, but it's so much easier said than done when it's hard enough to find one and then when I give up because I get no response it feeds my tendency to procrastinate and not try again.

ADHD management is possible! Ask yourself at least five questions before buying things and if that's not enough, keep going! Meds can also help but they're not always necessary.

This is my life. I have an Audible account that I've had for three years and I haven't even listened to one book yet... but every time I go to cancel it, it says it will throw away all my accumulated credits, so I keep it going. And the cherry story? That really resonates with me. I have so many projects I want to undertake, but there are always too many steps. It's frustrating. I have a violin but I needed a new bow and got that, got a new music stand, and got the books to learn since I haven't played in about 15 years, but now the strings need replacing before I can do anything else and that's not something I can do by myself, especially given my ADHD stress and frustration, so it's a block - an expensive one - that I've undertaken. I also am into video games, and for one (very long) series of Japanese RPG, I have spent probably $6000 on collector's editions of the games in English and Japanese and merchandise... but that's not something I regret.

Yeah, I could think seriously about the fact that I can't pay rent this month. OR I could buy those video games I want and eat some nice mexican food. A tip from me is to leave impulse buys in your cart overnight before submitting payment, and don't save your card. My cart on steam is always full, but I rarely fill out everything I need to to actually make those purchases.

honestly, over the last few years, i bought soooooo much stuff i didnt need that it would no way fit in my apartment, so things are always messy and horrible (tripping over stuff on the floor, clothes in piles on the bed, etc.). i knew it was something i 100% needed to get a grip on, but it seemed impossible when i would end up with a ton of random attractive things in my shopping cart at stores and would always forget the items i actually needed. and there's soooo much shame around all of this. but, eventually, i realized that i don't need to be ashamed - no, its not the behavior i want to have, but i have adhd and it's harder for me to set boundaries with myself. and thats what finally pushed me to start throwing out the stuff i don't actually need. yes, i wish i could donate it or return stuff (i dont have many receipts), but i don't have a healthy relationship with shopping/owning stuff and my apartment literally always looks like a bomb went off, so the only thing i feel i can do while i'm having control over my impulses is to get rid of as much as i can, try not to over-think it, and establish much healthier habits to prevent future shopping wastage. so far so good...

I was diagnosed at 28 as well and it helped with making sense of things. I did the same thing with a lot of subscription services and item returns.

For the filin in the deal with later folder part, i want to add another layer to that analogy that makes it work all the better; its not just any folder, its a hidden by default folder that you need to actively remember to toggle unhide hidden folders to even begin to look into it But dw, the folder does occasionally randomly unhide itself; but this will nvr be at a time when you can deal with it - its just to make you feel guilty for not doin it alrdy..... Oh well, thats not helpful at all actually xD

I had to make a deal with myself that if I sign up for a free trial or subscription or anything time-sensitive, I have to put the cancellation date as an alert in my calendar (days in advance because chances are I’ll forget at least once). Having a smart watch with a 14-day battery life has helped me so much. I put everything in my calendar and always wear my watch so I never lose track of anything. I know myself well enough to know when I will or won’t do something. Will I really take this item back if I don’t use it? Will I really take up this new hobby long-term? Will I really eat all this fruit? The answer is usually no. Exercise, self-awareness, and understanding how dopamine works plus taking my stimulant medication have really helped me turn my life around. Sure, I still forget stuff and get distracted and start doing something and end up doing a million other things but overall I’m much less stressed out and happier now that I have a system that works for me.

I've been trying to find ways to use the lack of dopamine in my brain to my advantage so I can focus on my work. I've been using pomodoro timers and a so-called "dopamine drip feed" to make boring tasks more engaging by listening to D&D videos that I've already watched and imagining the story while doing my engineering work. The only part I've been struggling to solve is how to reward myself after doing a pomodoro to encourage good focus for another 25 minutes. 🤔

I have gotten into the habit of visualizing how I will use things after I purchase them. And also adding everything I want to cart, but not buying it all. Example: I see an interesting book and just go ahead and indulge in the feeling of adding it to the cart. Then, I continue shopping for whatever else I need. When I get to the cart, I review all the items. I consider whether I'll actually have time to read the book anytime soon. If I can't visualize a way that I'll have time and space to easily read it, I click "save for later" or "add to favorites." It's so many steps that I just forget to buy things a lot of times hehe
