@ 1:50 if that happens, you flip over the axe and hit the log with the back of the axe. The piece of wood stil stuck on the axe will then split itself because it is forced down on the axe with its own weight. The technique shown in this video works only with pieces that are long and thin and dont have to many side branches. So this hack is only partially worth considering.

Nice method for smaller dry logs. Although a maul and a chopping block work far better for thicker pieces and wood that isn't dry. Axes are truly meant for felling trees, but work for light duty chopping.

@@susannschmidt6915 That's called a maul.
@gardnerjp1
@gardnerjp1 4 күн бұрын
@@salazam A maul is heavier than a splitting axe, with a common weight being around 8 pounds. Splitting axes are lighter and more maneuverable. The key difference lies in the cheeks of the tool. Both splitting mauls and splitting axes have flared cheeks designed to split wood efficiently, while felling axes feature flatter, thinner heads optimized for horizontal cuts to fell trees.

This is a very good tip. I had two large wood logs left because they were odd shape and hard to split, and I kept delaying splitting them because I knew they were difficult to split. Finally I used the tip in this video in this afternoon to split those two pieces. The tip actually works -- still hard work though because the wood fiber are twisted -- at least I could split them. Thanks for the tip.

@dougsholly9323
@dougsholly9323 7 жыл бұрын
I also gave this method a try, and I am surprised by how effective it is. Plus, if you split straight through, on a block the ax can get wedged pretty good, but landing sideways in a horizontal log, it rarely got stuck. This method is especially effective on smaller logs, or second splits.

By the way, he said, "In case all you have is an axe to split wood..." So suggesting a splitting maul is not the point.
@MsSomeonenew
@MsSomeonenew 8 жыл бұрын
I guess it is better for the one hit wonders, but if you need to smack it again there is the extra step of removal. Also it will work better if you wedge the support log and chop a notch into it so the top logs don't roll.

So at my family cabin, we chop wood with a 10lb wood splitter and a 35ish pound sledge hammer. Made from an old car axle with a hammer top welded on top of it. We kept breaking our sledge hammers with a wood handle.... We are also splitting tree logs a bit larger that the ones you had so your technique wouldn't work for us. But for our smaller logs this would be perfect. Save us some energy this will. Thanks for the tip.

+LIBERTY PRIME Why dont you try and split the wood by using a pocket knife instead by that logic. He's chopping baby sized pieces of wood with an axe... try doing this same job with normal sized logs and above and its a huge waste of time. Simply, go to the hardware store, buy a 'log-splitter' or a 'maul', ($10 bucks?), and get the job done in half the time without looking like a pussy.

+wildonemeister I split do firewood for a living. splitting 2-4 bush cord a day. this technique is good, however, hitting the log like that does damage to the wrists over a long period of time. I use this style but from the other side where I'm burying the axe into the dirt. it's good for anything up to 12" across. anything beyond 12" your best just to hit the holding wood ( the outer 3") normally 1-3 good swings will pop anything up to 30" across. anything past that I would drive a wedge into one side and use the axe on the direct opposite.
@wildonemeister
@wildonemeister 8 жыл бұрын
Justin Maizis Your firewood measurements does not compute in my part of the world - how much is 3 bush cords in liters? The math trying to figure out your funky measurements gave me a headache :P I might not have the best splitting maul, but my axe is top notch and I'd pick it over the maul any day. I personally split large pieces once or twice with my electric splitter and then use the axe on the rest to make things go faster. Can you sir answer me what kind of moisture content the US/Canada has as a minimum to sell the firewood? I've read 30% somewhere and in my part of the world it's 20% (which is of course way better in all aspects).

Actually both methods are good, depends on what kind of logs you're trying to split. Large (thick) logs are easier to split vertically one on top of another, thinner logs or branches go easier on the side as you've demonstrated. Also a proper splitting axe helps, the one you're using is definitely not suited for this job, the blade is shaped more like a cutting (felling) axe but I suspect it's actually one of those cheap Chinese "general purpose" axes that I wouldn't count on for any serious logging.

you are also using small pieces of wood. When you use much wider trees and bigger knottier chunks of wood, vertical with a maul and sometimes a wedge is how I do it. The way you swing the axe looks more exausting too and it looks pretty light, but that could be because I'm used to the mauls where you need the momentum.
@donniemontoya9300
@donniemontoya9300 8 жыл бұрын
ok your splitting the wood right but your swinging the ax wrong, don't lift with your back, bring the ax behind your body with a hand at the base and a hand at the top/center when the ax is above you mid way through the swing, slide your hand down to the base for more power and acceleration due to the fulcrum

MrSlacker82 As someone with the body and strength of your average IT guy, Swinging a maul is very difficult and usually results in the same exact issues as splitting with an axe, only it's heavier so it's more difficult to stop it. (Yes I know I'm a wimp, I don't really care, I know multiple people who have years of experience splitting wood and they all have horror stories of people splitting their shins and cutting off toes, Not somethin I'm willing to risk when there are easier and safer ways to do something.)

A splitting maul also known as a block buster, block splitter, sledge axe, or go-devil is a heavy, long-handled axe used for splitting a piece of wood along its grain. One side of its head is like a sledgehammer, and the other side is like an axe.
