I find that if I accept an invitation and am unable to attend an event because my body crashes people don't understand and think I just can't be bothered. This happened at Christmas and I ended up at home on my own with no Christmas dinner! I feel so fed up having to explain my health difficulties. My niece has paid for me to go to Edinburgh for a birthday treat so I have told her that I may be too fatigued to go. She is very upset about this but I don't want to leave my decision to the last moment. It is so frustrating. I think JOMO will have to be my chosen response. I can't continue feeling sad and guilty about not joining in. Thank you so much for your helpful advice.

I love reframing ie “I’d love to share in a Xmas dinner. Let’s explore the options to make that happen.” “I’m over the moon with your gifting of a trip to Edinburgh. Let’s brainstorm what needs to occur to make that a reality.” All done within your capacity levels whilst acknowledging the other parties involved. Win/Win! Here’s to “Hell yes” JOMO situations!

I was feeling this way this weekend. Went out for a couple hours and wanted to stay out longer but knew I couldn't.

Hey I've never thought of doing this. Two or three times a week I feel horrible about missing important things for my friends and family. I couldn't even attend a funeral and had to keep asking myself if everyone would understand. Just that angst alone caused a flare up! So this new perspective would be helpful in many ways. Thank you so much.

Hi Toby thank you for all your help thanks to you i am on my way to recovery after spending 4 years doing not much more than crying because i couldn't do my cleaning cooking and taking care of my myself and family after i fund you nlmy life been getting better avery day Thank you for the help you giving my and thousands of people god bless you ❤

My takeaway is the idea of the full-body yes and the full-body no. How often do we know we don't really want to do, or are not up for, something, but we feel that 'should' guilt. Again, it comes back to trusting your body, your own mind and your instinct. The other takeaway is that saying no now will contribute to all the other things you are doing to improve your health. Thanks again Toby for another video nugget of gold ⭐

Toby...this is excellent advice. Having just experienced the guilt of having to refuse invitations and feeling continued guilt for days it really impacted on my nervous system dramatically. Fast forward a week later I felt grounded sufficiently to say no to another invite. The result was I felt so much lighter and happier. Thank you Toby for your amazing continued insight to assist those with CFS

I really like the checking in with self... Is it a full boy nope? Or a whole body hell yeah...... And if it's a nope writing out the benefits of saying no!!! I had to say no to family Christmas with all of my siblings this past year! I had had covid and just could not do it. After telling them this. I spent the day resting, quietly, recovering. It was EXACTLY what I needed to do. I had been dreading going and what it would take out of me!!

Thanks for this. It's putting words to the feelings I've had regarding these choices. There ARE times when you say, "Yes, I'm going to go for it, and hang the consequences!!" However politely removing yourself from an event that would be draining but you're not passionate about attending Can be VERY empowering

Love this, Toby. I have FOMO for sure, but I know that I need to be saying "no" more now so I can say "yes" to anything/everything later on! I like the idea of writing a list of benefits; I'm a list maker, so seeing it in writing would definitely help me. Thank you!

Visit a very dear old friends growing old & their health is NOT WELL. 😢 I WANT TO GO SEE EM, before they no longer have Life. 😢 Missing out of quality TIME with them . 😢😢😢😢😢 Very difficult to accept. Our bodies are so fragile as the body degenerates. Weakens .😮😢😢😢 very difficult STRESS to deal with. 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔 Distressing 😢

What if you'd rather JOMO but you have to take your kids places? I keep being told my 14yo is bored, he needs friends, he needs to do a sport, things like scouts or cadets. Thing is, every time I leave the house I have to drive 40-80km to get to any of these things.

Great video. It may not work thought if you are missing your child's highshool graduation, their wedding or close family funeral. If you really cannot go I think it will hurt in this case.

Yes Izabella, there are definitely those kinds of events where missing out is a real and emotional problem. Perhaps they are situations where 'if I can't put myself first, I can put myself equal' comes into the equation, as far as possible, so that one can attend important things, whilst also having in place some self-care practices that help to minimise the ME reaction. Good tipp writing down the benefits of not going. The only question that comes up with this concept: Do we train our brain, that when we write down the good things if we say no and pace instead and so on, to see the other activity's as bad ?

I don't think that the other activity has to be classed as 'bad' in itself, but it's more a case of that particular activity just not being a good idea at present, or 'not for me'. That doesn't mean that it won't be good to do at another time.
