UPDATE: Thx for all the comments explaining why Tittle wore a helmet with a handle. He broke his jaw while playing with the 49'ers and the handle was added for extra protection and to give extra support of the facemask. Tittle did not where this design after he was traded to the Giants which truely makes this helmet a one of a kind.

I did some research on the helmet the "handle" was put on the helmet to double as a water cup, as the Giants were saving money on reducing small expences such as drinking cups, extra pens, paper clips, etc!

1975 Dallas Cowboys bicentennial helmet with the two bar or Ken stabler raiders helmet with the smiley face sticker on the back

These helmets are built by Gridiron Memories in Indiana. They are duplicated exactly right down to the same threads used in the simple webbing style suspension liners. It is an RK Riddell helmet. The RK was basically born as Riddell began making helmets for US Army paratroopers late in WW2. Riddell also made another style shell called the TK...which didn't have the 'bubble' shape ear area protrusions the RK had and looked more like the more modern VSR helmets in the 80's and 90's. Both models had the web suspensions in different versions depending on the version year. The RK and TK helmets were designed to fit close to the head and needed to be spread opened when placing them on your head. The 'handle' device on this one was there as a special design as Title had a broken his right jaw and it made the helmet more rigid. It was considered a form of protecting the healing process while he continued to play after the injury.

I have a pre-1955 Riddell RK2 suspension helmet just like this Y.A. Tittle one. These pre-1955 helmets were worn also by Johnny Unitas, Y.A Tittle, Frank Gifford, Chuck Bednarik, Joe Namath, Ben Davidson, Jim Otto, Sonny Jurgensen, Roman Gabriel, Sam Huff, Joe Kapp, Jim Marshall and many others. They are really the iconic old-school helmets that are great for display purposes. The helmets they have now look more like motorcycle helmets and they are really goofy looking to the helmets made in the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's helmets.

This is really cool, really like the builds and I am a fan of nostalgia. I did a little research about the metal piece attached to the helmet and this is what I was able to find out... On the cover of the November 1954 issue of Sports Illustrated, Y.A Tittle is on the cover wearing the "Lucite" facemask which was very popular in the mid 50's. He's also wearing a special bar to protect an injury he had to the right side of his face. Tried to help solve the mystery :o)

Y.A. Tittle was the 1st person I thought of before I clicked on this .. Side story; My 95 year old Father in law shared a room with YA Tittle at LSU in the 40's and is to this day a huge LSU Fan **Tittle played 17 years between the AFL, NFL and NFL (Modern) We got my FIL an LSU Joe Burrow Jersey that he's wearing for the Super Bowl because he's just the biggest Joe Burrow fan now too

Playing football in England we had very limited resources as a team and helmets were just a case of if it roughly fit, you could wear it. It's quite amazing for me to see just how intricate and detailed helmets can be - aswell as all the variation that exists. Had no idea of the different aspects of helmets

The handle is a stabilizer for the clear face mask it would tend to come off easily so the trainer for the 49ers put that handle stabilizer bar to stabilize the face mask and protect his jaw more

I wanna see an old school notre dame helmet with a green visor, that would be dope. like the era where the bar was straight down the middle, really anything old school with a black or colored visor would be cool but i played pop warner in the 90s and we had the worst equipment like the entire team qb and all had the bo jackson helmet, only cool thing is we were the bengals and one year got the strips but after about 1 game they all were halfway ripped off lol
